new beginnings, the best kind of stories
I met someone. Months ago. I knew it from the beginning that it was just a little different. There's really no way to explain that, you just know it. He sent me flowers on my birthday, and he didn't even know...they were purple and green and well, that's something to me. Purple flowers. And I never even mentioned it...not any of it. In ten days, he goes back, overseas, to a place that's sad and lonely. Nothing like here, even on your absolute worst day. And so for sixty-some days, he and I won't be one time zone apart, we will be half a world apart, for the third time since he's walked into my life. Where he lands, where he stays, if he does, I don't know. But, I do know this: some days, when he's over there, it's like a goddamn marathon, and I don't run, so I don't know what that's even like. But I do know that it's all I can do to get out of bed the next day. I am exhausted from the not knowing, from sitting on the edge of my chair, from waiting for that tiny whistle from my phone that tells me he's emailing...for the phone to ring and his voice is what's on the other end. I hope you never have to know what that's like. I hope you never have to know what it feels like, inside of your body, deep in your soul, what it's like to be away from something that matters that much to you. To not be able to reach out and just have it whenever you want. I hope you never have to know that feeling. Because it's the kind of thing that makes you afraid to sleep and afraid to wake up, all at the same time.
