I swear, I never meant to get in between you and Benji. But when we’re together it feels like magic. I can’t stop smiling when you’re around me, even when we’re just walking next to each other not saying anything. I’ve never felt more connected to someone in my entire life.

ISABELLA FERREIRA as PILAR SALAZAR in LOVE, VICTOR (2020)
i am really really glad that when victor pulls andrew aside, he's like "so are yougonna tell everyone" and he's like "no, i would never do that" even the shittiest guy in the series so far has the understanding that outing someone is a line you can't cross. mayhaps he can have some rights... as a treat
love, simon and love, victor parallels part 2 (part 1)
love, victor said in this house we give the gays their aus and gave us the one bed in a motel, the coffee shop, the road trip, and even threw in a changing room montage and i thank them
Please don’t blame Benji for my stupid mistake. He’s too good a guy to walk away from. He’s thoughtful and sweet and patient. My point is, Benji is the best.
tbh i just really don't get the argument that victor and benji didn't spend a realistic amount of time together before getting together?? especially in the context of a love simon spin-off, because, i mean, no shade to bram and simon, but they basically only have one night of real interaction beyond emailing each other before their giant fucking ferris wheel kiss, and if people can believe in them together, i definitely don't get the argument against victor and benji. benji appears in every single episode, and interacts with victor in all of them. victor and benji work together, which means they spend almost every day with each other. they go on a road trip together. benji comes to victor's birthday party. they do stupid dances together, they go thrifting together, they see each other around school, they have each other's numbers, benji draws victor as a gift, they work together so often that they're completely in tune with each other. they spend a lot of time together. you have to remember this show has half-hour episodes, but benji is still very present, even if he isn't a constant presence. that's the format of the show - sometimes the focus of the plot is on the family, sometimes it's on victor, sometimes it's on mia, sometimes it's on lake or felix, sometimes it's on benji. even victor isn't present in a lot of scenes, and the entire show is named after him. and when the focus is on benji, it's almost always on victor too, the exceptions being his scenes with derek which are used to demonstrate how benji approaches dating and romance.
i've seen people saying that benji wasn't integrated into the friend group enough, and it's true that he wasn't in victor's main school friend group but - why does he need to be? victor meets him at school but he doesn't get to know him that way; he gets to know him because they work together. i actually really liked that all of victor's friends and family know who benji is - he's not a secret stranger, they all know him and like him - but at the same time victor gets to know him better than the rest because of his work. it seemed hugely realistic to me. human relationships and particularly friendships are less of a big group together, and more a bunch of overlapping circles. you can get close to people outside your main friend group and still have that friend group know who they are. it particularly makes sense since victor is not exactly trying to draw attention to his feelings for benji, but he also doesn't hide that they're friends and coworkers, and i like that.
i know people are saying that benji wasn't developed enough, and i agree that he probably wasn't as deeply developed as some of the other characters. that's partly the point, though: the writers have said that the next season is going to be more about unpacking benji's character, because in the first season he is sort of a "dream guy" for victor. i equally think that mia is representative of a "dream girl" for him that he really wants to like, and significantly most of her development this season is around her relationship with her family, whereas from now on there will be a more complicated relationship between her and victor as they deal with the fallout from episode 10. so i'm not denying that more is needed here to get into the subtleties of benji's character beyond his experience being an out gay guy, but that's exactly the joy of a tv show, that we don't just have to get to know the characters completely in the first season, and we don't need to believe the characters live happily ever after together based only on their interactions before their big first kiss. we also get to explore their interactions afterwards, when they have a different level of honesty in their relationship.
(also, in terms of the comparison with felix - yes, benji is probably a less memorable or unique character than felix, but arguing that this means felix has got a deeper relationship with victor and therefore they should be together instead… the authenticity of felix and his bond with victor are a way in which they have a platonic support system where they can be honest with each other without feelings getting in the way? idk it's just so important and incredible to have a friendship like that where you can talk and externally support each other through the messy romantic stuff that has more fear and discomfort attached. there's just this feeling of deep, solid support between them, and i would personally never want to try to put romance into that just because they're two good male characters who have a deep bond? i love the development of their friendship and i adore felix, i agree with basically everyone that he's one of the best characters in the show, but that doesn't mean he needs to be a love interest. victor/felix is neither abusive, inappropriate or otherwise weird, so if you wanna ship it, you do you - i just personally don't really get it.)
besides, already there's a lot of authenticity in the interactions between victor and benji? they say multiple times that they feel able to be themselves around each other, and to talk to each other. and i just really love their dynamic? i am so used to there being some kind of Cool Guy that the main character is always totally flustered and awkward around, and we do get that towards the beginning (i mean victor just fully running away after the coffee thing is a big mood). but one of the things i love about victor is that, while he has his moments like this, he's in general fairly confident and honest when it comes to his interactions with other people - when he's scared or flustered is usually just related to his struggle with his sexuality and his internalised homophobia. as he gets to know benji, he isn't scared to be goofy or silly around him, and they have very easy conversation - i'm not just cringing as victor awkwardly tries to speak to his Big Crush. they're both kind of cool and outgoing but in different ways - victor is very charming and kind and socially at ease, and you can tell that people like him; benji is the cool artistic type, and he's also goofy and confident and jokes around easily. they also both demonstrate that they like to be thoughtful and romantic and sensitive, and they don't try to hide that part of themselves.
one of the things i think about a lot when looking at relationships is the idea of balance, and i think in this first season benji does have a distinction from victor which is that he's out, and this means he has experience that victor doesn't. he is also presumably one or two years older than victor, which i think feels more obvious from the casting, because while the actual age gap between the actors is similar, michael cimino just looks a lot more like a teenager than george sear does imo. ages aside though, their relationship feels natural and balanced apart from this distinction of benji being out and having been through the process of accepting himself already. but that's the process victor goes through in this first season, which means i'm looking forward to their interactions in the future as benji helps him on the continuation of this journey, but also as they are able to be open and honest together.
this post kind of got away from me lol but essentially what i'm trying to say is that the writers are fitting the relationship between victor and benji to the tv format, and that's fine? that's good? by all means, ship or don't ship whoever you want! i agree that i want to know more about benji in the future. but their relationship is definitely not baseless - it has a lot of mutual understanding and authenticity already, and it has been built on regular interactions that created this ease between them. i really love their relationship so far and i really love both characters, so i just pray that we get our season 2 and get to know even more about them.
You’re not a stranger. You’re one of us. That’s the best part about all of this. Having a community. A group of friends that gave up an entire weekend to help a kid that they’ve never met, just because they know that on some level, we’ve all been through the same thing. Because we’re family.
