Lily had been hearing apologies and condolences all week, and she was goddamn sick of it. Oh, their intentions were (for the most part) pure, but if she had to hear “He’s in a better place now” one more time, she was going to punch someone in the gut. So, in an effort to hide from people, she decided to visit her favorite spot in the castle, the Great Lake, hoping that people wouldn’t dare come outside in the freezing cold. The tranquil lake had always had its way of calming her down. But as she sat by the edge, her toes dipped into the cool water, she realized that this time, it was not working. The only thing, the one person, that could calm her was her father. And he was six feet under. Taking a deep breath, Lily struggled to remain composed, and her body tensed at the sound of footsteps heading towards her. “Thank you for your concern, but I’m fine.” she said dryly in a clearly rehearsed voice, not even bothering to look to see who it was. “I would like to be alone.”
Scorpius might feel a little guilty, although he had no reason to. It wasn't his fault her father was dead, and it wasn't his fault she was with him that day, it had been his birthday and while he had teased her about getting him a present, he hadn't exactly expected her to actually come around. He hadn't actually seen her since except in passing in crowded halls full of people surrounding her and saying sorry. He might not have known her as well as some, but he knew well enough that she wouldn't want that. She wouldn't want any of the pity, she was too proud for any of it. So when he saw her leaving the castle, knowing exactly where she was going, he gave her a few minutes before he followed in silence, moving closer to her even as she spoke before moving to sit a few feet away. "The lake will be frozen over within the next couple weeks, don't you think Potter? Hope you don't come out here and freeze your toes off."
