More than just paper and string. In Bali, kite flying is a sacred dialogue with the heavens. The Festival Layang-Layang is a thanksgiving ritual to Hindu deities, asking for a bountiful harvest. Every giant Bebean (fish), Janggan (bird), and Pecukan (leaf) carries the spirit of community, crafted by entire villages working as one.

Pengerebongan - Also known as Ngerebong is a sacred ceremony that takes place in Bali 8 days after each hari raya Kuningan. This holy ceremony took place for the first time in 1937 and until now Kesiman is the only village in Bali that celebrates this tradition. The day is believed to be a gathering of the gods to promote balance between all things. Many Balinese from outside this village come to watch the ceremony and see the giant penjors that are bigger than the usual ones seen during the Galungan holidays. Many people experience ‘kerauhan’, a trance-like state, as their body is possessed by spirits unknown and when this happens many will call to hold the Keris, a Balinese dagger and will try to stab themselves with it, usually in the chest, legs, or even in the eyes. Surprisingly, no one is ever hurt/damaged by this act, because it’s believed their body is protected by the legendary Barong, the king of spirits and leader of all things good.
