goodbye
It was unfair how quickly good things seemed to leave.
A villain with a fire quirk had attacked, buildings burning and people screaming, the snake girl couldn’t do much other than keep the criminal frozen. By the time she was able to get close enough to knock him out, her eyes were bleeding, and her vision was blurring.
Maybe that’s why she hadn’t noticed the frog girl. Mongoose knew that her friend had been there with her, and knowing her she had helped the civilians evacuate. But a fire was no place for a frog, so she had to make sure she was out of there.
Despite her desperate cries, there was no answer from Tsuyu. Smoke started filling her lungs as she raced through the street, rubbing at her eyes. She had barely noticed the figure on the ground, bending over and picking them up. “Sh.. shit. Tsuyu-chan?” No response.
The next thing she knew, Mongoose had woken up in the hospital, having passed out in the middle of the blaze. She doesn’t see Tsuyu anywhere, so she does the stupid things and tries to get up, only to fall once both feet were on the floor.
It’s hours later, after being tied to the bed, after sedation, that they tell her what had happened. Everybody had lived, except for the person who had meant more to her than anything else. Mongoose can’t help but remember how she had left her alone, she must have been so scared.
Her friend, the one responsible for ending her loneliness, was gone, and she couldn’t do a damn thing to save her.
Weeks passed before the funeral came, the girl placing lilies on her grave. “I’m sorry, Tsuyu-chan. I… I really fucked up, didn’t I? If only my quirk was stronger, if I was stronger…” No matter how many times she wiped her face, the tears wouldn’t stop. “But, I’ll keep my promise. I’ll become a great hero, and then, maybe… Maybe we can meet again in the next life?… I’d really like that more than anything right now.”
