Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day, a per popular misconception. Instead, it commemorates a single battle!
On May 5, 1862, 6,000 French troops invaded Mexican city of Herรณica Puebla de Zaragoza, outnumbering Mexican soldiers. Despite being severely outnumbered by French forces, their fierce fighting had the French retreating by evening.

"How is it celebrated in mexico?"
Cinco de Mayo is celebrated primarily in Puebla, where Zaragoza's victory occurred. It involves military parades, recreations of the Battle of Puebla, and other festive events! May 5 is not federal holiday, so offices, banks, and stores remain open.
