Turned 50, Keeping the T-shirt

It’s fun already, being 50. Technically I’m closer to 49 than to 51, so I’m almost in my forties! As it turns out, you’re not a year older with every birthday. A day is a day. With each sunrise, you wake up one day older than the previous day. But half a century is half a century, regardless of any mathematical twists.

I find I’m more tolerant of creative health foods nowadays. I recently baked some Breanies, brownies made out of black beans. I wasn’t alarmed when HotMess’s dog, Duke “The” BoyDog, backed away from a slice of it. He’s younger than I am, even if you count his age in dog years. We’ll see how he wolfs ‘em down in a human year or two. (They’re actually tolerable slathered in nutella.)

And I’ve got clothes from decades ago that still fit. Some of them have been out of style so long, they’re about to come back into fashion! If I get myself a new T-shirt advertising my age, I’ll have a decade of days to wear it before I’ll have to do a quick fix and Sharpie the 5 into a 6. But when I’m 60, won’t I say I’m almost in my fifties? 

That’s a keeper either way, a shirt that just won’t go out of style.

Bikinis and Stilettos

When I got involved with a group of like-minded authors, lots of opportunities opened up for us to offer our “literary arts” to others. One of my fave events of the year was at World's Fair Park, the home turf where My Friend the Sunsphere is most often seen! 

The county mayor came to the event to give a speech and lead a parade of authors. This mayor is well-known for his career in wrestling. I asked a park security guard, “Does this mean all the ladies need to put on bikinis and stilettos and walk around real slow with our books held above our heads?”

He assured me we weren’t expected to do that. But I could tell from his expression this scenario might get anonymously suggested for approval next year!
