sofi is the oldest of three siblings, all born in san juan in puerto rico, after her parents decided to leave the midwestern life and live in their native island. sofi grew up knowing spanish as a first language, although she was naturally good at learning and speaking english, and therefore never had a problem communicating with anyone during her time holding little part time jobs in puerto rico. growing up with a nice tan, an extensive beach volleyball knowledge, and an intense love for her island, everyone was surprised when sofi chose to leave back to the country with her father, when they learned that her paternal grandparents were in need of care and help with their farm, as they were both elderly. sofi came with out of pure curiosity, she didn’t know a lot about her grandparents on her father’s side, and she had never seen a proper farm.
it was clear as day that the farm life had charmed the girl’s socks off, she enjoyed helping her grandmother feed the few chickens they had, she even learned to milk the one cow her grandfather still had. she just loved how quiet it was, how pretty the sunset looked over the mountain. she didn’t even have to miss the beach, as there was one right there in pelican. at one point, her father left and it was only the girl and the two elderly farmers. but by the end of it, she was mostly taking care of them than working on the farm. it was concerning when her dad came back, basically to get rid of the little animals they had. sofi never had the nerve to ask why he was doing it, but she knew. she was only seventeen when her grandparents died, both to her horror and comfort, within that same year. she was already attending high school in pelican town by then, so her dad allowed her to stay and graduate. but the fate of the torres’ farm was uncertain.
sofi graduated high school, and in order to avoid any potential legal problems she couldn’t stay at the farm, but she didn’t want to leave either. so she got herself an au pair job in the city, which allowed her to get into college, have a job, and have a place to stay; all while still being able to make sure her grandparents’ farm wouldn’t disappear one day out of the blue.
while working for her degree in biology, sofi met ben, a man who would quickly become her close friend, study buddy, and soon enough her boyfriend. back then, the mother of the child she watched had told her not to go too serious with him, to experience her twenties, to focus on her career. and sofia half-listened, at least until ben very sporadically proposed to her in the university’s library the day their final finals were over. completely over the moon, sofi said yes. how could she not? she adored this man, despite the fact they had already had countless arguments on how she lived her life, on how she dressed, on the company she kept, on how the boy’s mother was a bitch.
needless to say, sofi never saw the red flags until it was too late. the wedding was gorgeous, and she was having such a great time, until her now husband pulled her aside and told her her dress was too slutty. how his family was disappointed, how his friends kept looking at her body. and sofi spent the rest of her wedding night feeling self-conscious, even after the reception was over and they went home as husband and wife.
they were married for about two years before sofi realized where their relationship had landed her. she had a degree in biology but stayed home all day, because ben didn’t want her to work. he also didn’t want her to have any male friends, because that’d be cheating. he also didn’t want her to have any female friends, because they were all bitches. he didn’t want her to talk to her mother, because she was stupid. it was when she found herself all alone, in an apartment where the only sounds she heard were those of cars flying by and ambulances rushing past, that she realized she was miserable. and when she learned from her dad and a lawyer that her grandparents had left her the farmland in a will, she found herself an out. she prepared her escape in record time, all secretive, only a few days of work on the phone with lawyers.
but then she found out she was pregnant. this was supposed to be wonderful news, wasn’t it? it kind of was. ben seemed to be beyond excited to be having a baby, and sofi thought that maybe this would help them come together, form a family, and better themselves as a couple. and it all seemed to plausible, he behaved so politely, that sofi forgot about the farm for a handful of months there. everything was perfect... until frida was born. ben refused to even hold her, let alone feed, bathe, or change her.
as if running on very little sleep and a lot of physical pain for almost half a year wasn’t enough, one night sofi found suggestive text messages on her husband’s phone while looking at it to get the time. photos and everything. that night felt like a blur, and it still does, if sofi were to talk about it, it would be very brief. they argued, very loudly, there was gaslighting, guilt tripping, name-calling. in the end, sofi grabbed a couple of bags and got herself a room in a hotel for a couple of nights, paid for with his credit card. fully knowing this wouldn’t be a good plan in the long run, sofi reached out to a friend and asked to crash in their couch with her baby for a couple of weeks while she sorted out her business. it was nice to know that, despite how she had cut off almost everyone out of her life, they all still had room in their hearts for her, and now for little frida, too.
with the help of lawyers and her dad, sofi got back on her feet within a few months, now a single mom. soon after frida turned one, the pair moved into sofi’s grandparents’ old house, now fully theirs. the greenhouse was still in perfect shape, and with her knowledge and love for plants, sofi profited off the soil really fast. within a couple of years, her flowers were being requested by big florists in the city, and she was finally free. frida is now six and it wasn’t until maybe two years ago that sofi left the greenhouse more often than to buy food at pierre’s, now that she is fully independent and running her own little business, she has more of a chance to live her life how she wants.
