I doubt anyone is looking to me with the whole Avid situation so this is mostly for my own conscious. To start I will not include Avid in any of my future works and any current ones will have him edited out. This is because I can’t in good conscience write about him. I hold nothing against creators who don’t remove him from their works but I’d still encourage others to do the same. I think at the day with a situation like this you should do what is best for your own conscious and that is what I’m doing with my own works, but that does not mean my decision should apply to everyone else. Regarding fics some solutions I’ve seen out there are replacing Avid with an OC, Jimmy, or another CC. Similarly, I’ve seen a lot of people say that they will leave their works as is, but will add an authors note clarifying their stance on this situation. I also know some will chose to delete their works entirely. However, others handle this I do not plan to hold it against them, but I will not stand with anyone who defends Avid, especially if they haven’t even bothered to look into other creator statements.
Those close to me will know that I have a very firm separation of character and creator but even then I struggle to apply that here. I think often we say separate the art from the artist, but I’ve always felt that that was unrealistic. I think in the separation of the artist, we deprive the artist of all the intention they had when creating that work. When I look back on the characterization of Avid in vampire SMP with everything I’ve learned from other creator statements I can only see how much v!Avid was made as a product of who Avid was as a person. I will not pretend that I knew Avid well and that this personally affected me in the way it is affected so many creators but in how I trust their words I find it impossible to keep a firm line between the character and creator of Avid because of how the Avid himself has entangled them. This belief has majorly shaped my actions regarding the situation.
Regarding BEM:
Because KIA has already been in the process of being reworked over the last few months, it made the most sense to as part of that rework edit out Avid and Elle’s storylines entirely. Me and Soggy decided we weren’t comfortable with continuing with their storylines and that we couldn’t do it in good conscience. Both of us will be going through our fics and editing out any mentions of them. To make up for the cut content I’ll be dedicating more story space to other characters and OCs.
Regarding BEM:
I've already started the process of changing my story outlines to write out Avid for my part, I am in the same boat as potato and cannot write about avid in good conscious. The story will continue to follow Shelby, Drift, and Scott, and there will hardly be any changes in what you see as most of what I had written regarding them was further down the line.
Avid will not make an appearance in TAO, or BEM.
This blog is still a safe space, and if you choose to seperate the character from the CC you are not unwelcome — you are only unwelcome if you choose to defend Avid and Marm after reading statements or choosing to stay ignorant on other perspectives while defending them.
And all love goes to the CC's and people Avid and Marm hurt
Also about the avid and marm situation, i know its tough rn but remember that we as a community, in vsmp, skyblock, the flight etc, did nothing wrong by loving their work, their characters, their stories.
No matter how many "i told you sos" youll see on twitter or anywhere else, please dont feel like you should've known better when the whole point of the shitstorm is that people got manipulated, intentionally. Youll see the sentiment of "dont idolise content creators" repeated, and it seems so obvious from the get go, but I know it often only hits once something of this severity happens in relation to a creator you love.
It hurts and it sucks and however you decide to react to it is your business and your business alone. Keep creating, keep loving, or take a break, focus on something else entirely, whatever you do, there is no correct or right way to deal with putting so much effort and care into stories of people who hurt others, not when theyre already off the cc sphere anyway.
I know i dont need to give my two cents on this, that it has all been said before, but just yknow. Support circle and a little empathy to my fellow mcyt fan compatriots bc yall are some of the most talented, passionate and creative people ive seen and its so easy to get lost in further discoursauce and let it get to you
