Initial Reflection
Not knowing a single thing about jazz, my father took 11 year old me to Java Jazz 2012. I didn’t know anyone or what type of music jazz was, but I actually enjoyed it. Some of the memorable musicians I witnessed were Pat Metheny, Dave Koz, and etc. After attending that fest, I believe jazz has to do something with playing music the way you want it, and it has to have saxophones playing. Thankfully, this quarter in Gr. 10 Music, I am able to venture into jazz’s origins and how it developed throughout the century.
The topic I am choosing from all 3 is the 2nd topic. The 2nd topic is: Jazz has changed and grown considerably since it first began. How can we see the continuity of “jazz” as a style in the midst of these changes? Do the changes improve jazz as a whole, or do they take away from the great tradition that it once was? Should we be open to the changes that jazz has undergone, or should we be preserving the beauty and tradition of jazz?
I chose this topic because I am interested in how people could keep coming up with new ideas and styles for their music. In my opinion, I think that jazz still continues as its own style because of still relying on the use of improvisation on the music/song. Despite all the changes in melody and instruments used, the essence of jazz is in its improvisation. Be it influences from another country or using another instrument, the sound of jazz is not looking at the sheet thinking if you are playing it right. Therefore, jazz is still the jazz we know it. Everyone has different music taste, but it might not hurt to listen to the changes jazz had undergone and we should appreciate what other people think of a certain sub-genre of jazz.
My hopes for this tumblr is that I am able to present most of the things that changed jazz and how it still stands as a music genre today.
