Harry’s temper was just as short as Bastian’s and it’s why they got along for a lot of reasons. But on a job, it had to be reeled in. There were only a certain few people who could have walked through the door at a time like that and not get a faceful of Alfie’s anger. He was frustrated, because his brother had been a stupid fuck, and he was tense because of exactly what Bastian said. All that had happened was getting the police to pay more attention, which wasn’t what they needed. As the other man sat down, Alfie slammed the ledger shut, a satisfying thump ringing out as the book shut, and he glared at him.  It wasn’t Bastian’s fault, but he was there, and Harry wasn’t. “I fuckin’ know that, don’t I?” He snapped, “This puts us all in the shit, you know?” There was a pause, and then he sighed, scratching at his beard and chewing thoughtfully on the inside of his cheek. Bastian was like Harry in a lot of ways, but he got held to a higher standard. Why? Because Alfie said so. “Why th’fuck did you let him do it?”

“Th’fuck do you want?” Whenever Alfie saw the tall fucker, something was wrong. Or, at least, that was how it seemed to him. Now, of course, there were exceptions, nothing in the world was black and white, and anyone who said it was was one bad decision away from floating face down in the Thames. “If you’re here to tell me Harry’s in the shit again, I already bloody know.” He dropped the pen he was holding in favour of picking up that morning’s newspaper and tossing it into prominence on the mess that was his desk. “Pulled a gun on some thick-headed copper, didn’t he?” He sighed, his brother had a habit of getting into trouble when they needed it least. He sat back in his chair, and lifted a hand towards Moran, before pointing it at the chair opposite him. “Sit th’fuck down, you’re makin’ me itch.”

Once Jane got herself into a state, it was always difficult to bring herself back down. It had taken her hours to prepare for this, and that was after she’d spent days considering coming here in the first place. She simply wasn’t a confident girl. She would have to do better.

Taking a deep, shuddering breath, Jane reached into her handbag to take out a handkerchief, and dabbed at her eyes to catch the tears before they had a chance to fall. They weren’t sadness in as much as they were fear; she hated the idea that she could get found out for doing this, because she knew how bad it would make things. Strong though she was, Jane knew she couldn’t handle home becoming worse than it was. 

She lifted her glass and sipped from it, this time barely wincing at the taste. “There was a brewery, too. In Fulham. And– and a couple of bookmakers, not far from here. I haven’t been to see them yet.” She looked at him properly for this first time this meeting, eyes red-rimmed. “I don’t know that I should. Should I?”

What was he supposed to do, now? She was crying. Alfie didn’t know what to do, a crying woman in his office was the last thing he’d expected he’d encountered when he’d woken up that morning, and he considered looking away, giving her a chance to compose herself. But he didn’t. He kept watching, because that was what he did, and when she spoke, he was more than ready to listen. He nodded, slowly, at her information. Bookies, Breweries and him. Sounded like a list alright. The question was, who were the others, where had the information come from in the first place, and, and he kept circling back to this one, why was she telling him? He thought, for a moment, dark blue eyes studying the girl on the other side of the desk. She didn’t have a clue what she was doing. She was a fucking mystery. 

“I dunno, should ya?” He didn’t mean to be cryptic, it just came naturally. But her doubts were enough to keep his attention. A copper’s niece in a gangster’s den trying to do the right thing. “This uncle o’ yours... you know why he had the list? Where he got it from? Or nah?” He’d have to figure out who was selling him down the river. Sabini would attack his bookies before his bread, it was how the fucker worked, and he owned most of the coppers in the area, they weren’t thick enough to try anything. But in the short term, it wasn’t important.  “See the trouble I’m having, love, is you ain’t asking for anything.” He paused, levelling his gaze at her, expectantly, awaiting the demands. “Now normally, people come in here with information like that and they’re lookin’ for money, or a deal, and you ain’t asking for either.” She was definitely a new breed. “Now I know you wanted to warn me that the police are looking my way, and I’m fucking grateful, Janey, don’t get me wrong - gives me a chance to sort my boys out, now, dunnit? But I’m looking at you, and I keep seeing something wrong.” He fell silent again, not that he’d exhausted his talking points, he’d barely started, but just because he wanted to give her a chance to catch up. On the other side of the door he could see Ollie, hovering awkwardly, he wanted to talk, but he’d have to wait. He was in a meeting. “A girl walks in with a face like that an’ a name on a list and you have to wonder - what’s the catch?”

That made him pause. She really underestimated him - or overestimated, he couldn’t tell yet. He didn’t answer straight away, she was tough, alright, but she was vulnerable. He wasn’t used to having people like that around, the vulnerable didn’t tend to hang around the likes of him, and  when they did, they were soon all the wiser. “Oh.” That was all he could say as he watched her with a bland, removed expression. How the Hell was he supposed to answer that? “Right then.” He nodded, once, “I won’t love.” The I’m not the rescuing kind was left unsaid.

Jane wasn’t sure if it was the silence or the way he watched her, but she had the sudden urge to finish her drink. Most people drank to calm their nerves, after all, and she was pretty much constantly a nervous wreck; the liquor burned on its way down but at least gave her something to focus on, if only for a few moments. 

She watched him with wide eyes as he spoke. His mind seemed to move a mile a minute, and she felt as though she were trailing behind, confused as to how he drew each conclusion. That wasn’t to say he was wrong, though. “I don’t hate him,” Jane replied. The rushed response and the way she had to check over her shoulder as though she could feel him there said otherwise. “He’s– no, I… I thought you’d want to know. About the– the–  I don’t hate him. He raised me, I– Mr. Solomons, he’s family.”

Oh, she hated him, alright. Or feared him. The signs were the same. But this time, he kept his mouth shut. None of his business, right? Only she was arguing now, getting flustered, trying to convince him, and before he could get anymore information about this list, he’d have to get her to calm down. His usual business style wouldn’t work here. She was different. “Alright, alright-” He lifted his hands to calm her, “Didn’t mean nothin’ by it.” He refilled her glass, then his own, patted her hand, gently, awkwardly, and gave her a moment, “S’alright, love. Ain’t gonna walk through the door, is he? Not now.” But when, that was the question, and why? If it was straight, if it really was the coppers, he was fucked, but if Inspector Wyndham was palming some cash from the Italians - it was most likely to be the fucking Italians, weren’t it? - then it was easier fixed. “This list. Who else was on it? It’s important. Try an’ remember.”

Well, that was unexpected. Alfie would have to admit that he was caught off guard with that one, which was probably why he didn’t answer her right away. He had to think about it. Would he? She was a beautiful girl, a blind man could see that, and she was stronger than he figured she was given credit for. Guts. The girl had guts. No. No, she’d be better off if she cut ties with the likes of him, and he should tell her that. He might have, if he’d allowed himself. “Yeah.” He said, eventually, and after much thought. “Yeah, Jane, I would.” Another pause, and suddenly the look on his face is changing, shifting from surprised contemplation to a smirk, a glint in his eyes, amusement, a refusal to take her seriously. She was a fool if she thought it was a good idea. “But ain’t it me s’posed to do the askin’, eh? Sure you’d have ‘em lining up.”

He was bloody proud of it too, keeping his grip on London, keeping his ties tight and his enemies close? There was no one better. But her? Oh he didn’t trust her as far as he could fucking throw her. “No, see, I’m not good. This ain’t luck, love.” He lifted a hand and tapped it to his temple, “It’s work.” He paused, watching the woman before him with the curious contemplation a child might have seeing something new for the first time. “Y’know, something here just ain’t smelling right.
