Dre's third album isn't a masterpiece, but it was worth the wait.

Reviewed Dr. Dre’s “Compton” for Complex. It’s his 3rd album; his first one came out when I was nine, his second when I was 16, and now his third when I’m double that age—32. I’ve grown up with this guy defining the sound of popular music at very important ages. He sounds a little worn out (like I feel) but surprisingly, his pop sensibility is intact.

Frankie Knuckles died last year at the age of 59. At the core of his music was his work as a DJ, but his credits as a producer will secure his legacy. Although House Masters is not the first compilation of Knuckles' work as a producer, it is the most ambitious. Whether you're a house novice or a dance music savant, it inscribes a new and invigorating story about who Knuckles was, and who he will be for the future.
