Ring Around
Time has always been their greatest enemy.
First they took too long to get together, then they waited too long to talk about their relationship problems, and gave up too soon. Got back together too soon, but held on for too long.
Too many toos.
When Rogue kisses him again, his left hand settles on the small of her back. He doesnât pull her towards him, he lets her come as close as she wants. Itâs more of an anchor for him; the situation is so surreal, the touch assures him its real.Â
When her hands fall away from his chest and to her sides, Remy keeps his where itâs at. âAs always, ChĂšre,â and he uses his free hand to take one of hers. He lifts it, brushing his lips against her gloved knuckles, like he would often do early in their relationship. Remy never breaks eye contact.
"Your wishes; my command."
She didn't know what she was doing anymore, she should have probably walked away from him then and there. She should have said goodbye or no, not goodbye. That felt too serious. Something like see you later.
But she didn't.
She stood there as he took her hand and brought it to his lips. It was something he had done so often in the past. He had always been a charming man and though she claimed to be immune to his charm she still occasionally felt herself falling for it. She really should have walked away.
Her gaze stayed on his own, she refused to be the first to break eye contact, as she listened to his words. Always so willing to listen, so patient. There had to be more to it.
"Remy." She wanted to say more but all she managed was his name and yet, she still found herself standing in his room. She'd no doubt be angry at herself later on for staying too long or for even saying the things she had but... they weren't wrong. She couldn't be angry. She was following her heart.Â
Ring Around
He always thought theyâd go out with a bang.
Remy will probably never be sure what is about hurting him that does Rogue so many favours. Sheâs a competitive gal, and arguments can quickly dissolve into âwinningâ instead of âwhatâs rightâ. And when sheâs losing, he knows for certain she is no stranger to lashing out desperately to hurt his feelings in hopes of keeping him from hurting hers anymore.Â
Heâs doesnât know what he did in this conversation to deserve such a hard hit, but sheâs knocked him for a loop. This soft kiss hits him like a brick to the face, and itâs a wonder he doesnât recoil beneath the touch. Her pretty lips are bit a dry, and he guesses without her utility belt sheâs losing her chapsticks left and right. Itâs always been the little things about her he finds adorable.
She leans back from the kiss, coming down off her toes to speak, but he dips his head to remove the distance she makes.
Itâs more than what she gave him, but less than what theyâve shared. âSure we be fine,â he agrees, his nose brushing hers. But will they be fine together? He always thought theyâd go out with a bang.Â
Now theyâre letting each other go without so much as a whisper.
Her hands moved to his chest, resting just there as she stays close to him. Eyes shut and she thinks about the closeness they share, however temporary it may have been. She needed this closeness with him but she would never admit to it.Â
She should have said something then and part of her itched to create distance between them -- not because she didn't want him close but because she associated that closeness with something bad, only because she wanted it.
She missed him and she hated being reminded of how much she had missed him but she didn't know if she missed them and maybe she did. She was confused.
This wasn't the way things were supposed to go.
"Ah hope." Because she didn't feel like she'd be okay in that moment but she was too stubborn to admit defeat of any sort. She'd have no choice but to be fine, to be a fighter because that's what she knew. Her lips met his again, however briefly, before she let go of him. Hands falling to her sides. "Ah guess we just have t'find out."
Ring Around
Not asking him to do anything is almost entirely his problem with the situation. Sheâs asking for zero effort form him. Zilch. Zippo. Nada. Rogue is expecting absolutely nothing from himâand that includes waiting. What was supposed to be a break is starting to look a lot more permanent, and from where heâs sitting, neither of them are losing much sleep over it. This could be as close to a clean break as theyâre ever going to get.Â
Thatâs a huge, terrifying step; one Remy isnât sure either of them are ready to take. But is that because they really want to get back together, or because their love is all theyâve known for so long, theyâre afraid to try anything new?
"Hey, now," he says. watching the smile fail to reach her eyes. "Yâ said we talk when yâ ready. I trust yâ gonâ know when that is." He trusts he knows when that is, too: never. Rogue admitting sheâs wrong (and to him) will be the day heâs dying. And probably only to clear her conscience.Â
"In the mean time, donâ trouble yâself none. Yâ got enough on yâ plate, hein?â
"You're right, ah shouldn't be so worried 'bout this. Ah got other things to worry about." Remy was the last thing that she should have been focused on and yet he was the first thing. For a greater part of her life, he had always been there. It had been her and him and now that she was away from him, things felt... They didn't feel like they once did. She thought she had to get used to it maybe or just, she didn't want to think about it.
She took a deep breath, bringing on gloved hand to rest on his own as he cupped her chin. "We'll be alright, always were."
That was all she could say, even though the words stung. Just being in front of him and confessing these things but he, maybe he wasn't the one ready to hear them or she wasn't ready to say them. He had always known her more than she thought she knew herself.
"Ain't ever been me if ah didn't find a little trouble t'get mah'self into." She smiled and leaned closer to press her lips up against his. It was a soft kiss, if he allowed such. Something that was meant to be more bittersweet than anything else. "We'll be jus' fine."
Howdy y'all.
Ring Around
He grimaces, looking around the room. He knows that tone and look all too well. Running a hand through his hair, Remy lets out a long breath, trying to get his barrings back. When she steps back from him, he reaches out to touch her arm. He knows better than to grab her; thatâll just lead to another uppercut.
"Rogue, ChĂšreâŠâ Heâll have to be mindful here. This is fast melting thin ice. âI do appreciate yâ sayinâ so, mais⊠I donâ know where to go witâ mâ response. I donâ know⊠how tâ hear that from yâ, anâ notâŠâ He steps closer to her, erasing the distance sheâs created. His fingers lightly touch her chin, tilting her head to look up at him. âDo somethinâ.â
His thumb brushes along her jawline. âI appreciate it because I needed de reminder.â Reminder, nothing. Heâs all but giving up.
"Ah'm not askin' you to do anythin' but somethin' would've been better than nothin'." She looked at him, she didn't move away from his touch. She only looked at him, her gaze meeting his own as she tried to look for answers but she couldn't find any, not in those eyes.
She took a deep breath and shook her head. It was a stupid move to come here, stupid move to tell him what she had. She should have come up with another answer but she couldn't. Truth was, she didn't want to lose Remy and a part of her felt that just maybe she might have if she didn't tell him how she really felt.
Only thing was, that was easier said than done.
"A reminder? Is that what it is." She smiled but there was no humour in her smile, it never quite reached her eyes. "Wasn't no reminder to me. Ah thought maybe, ah don't know what ah was thinkin'."

Ring Around
Thatâhe was not expecting.
Heâs been dreading the day she wants to Talk. Frankly, he thought whatever she had to say, it would boil down to âgoodbye.â He held on to the memory of their kiss in Australia, because he honestly thought it would be their last. A thought nearly solidified when her first order of business after demanding time alone was to get caught leaving Magnetoâs room at four in the morning.Â
Her confession hits Remy like bricks. A lot of desperate confusion and hope starts to burn around his mind. He quickly begins trying to stomp out those flames, knowing such confessions from Rogue always have another foot to fall.
Ah still love you, but not the way Ah did; Ah still love you, but Ah just canât be with you anymore; Ah still love you, but Magneto got meh pregnantâ
Mon Dieu. It was easier thinking sheâd moved on. He holds up his hand, suddenly finding himself just as antsy as her, unable to sit. Standing, âWell. I. Okay.â Merde, heâs totally off balance. â âpreciate the sentiment,  ChĂšre.â
She watched him stand and looked at him. It wasn't the fact that he looked somewhat antsy that bothered her, it wasn't the fact that he was unable to sit still just as she was. It was something else entirely. It was the words he had said. They hadn't felt right, although they could have been blamed on surprise, Rogue's mind hadn't focused on that.
She gave a slow nod and stepped back away from him. He appreciated the sentiment.
"Y'know, for a man that's supposed to be real charmin', you sure ain't got a way with words." That was all she said as her hands fell to her hips and she looked at him, expression changing. There had been worry and maybe even something gentle before. Now, she seemed unimpressed. Her temper getting the best of her as it usually seemed to.
"Y'all appreciate that sentiment, ah got somewhere ah need to be."
Ring Around
Mon. Dieu.
Alarm bells ring. A myriad of terrible things, horrible situations his low self esteem have been dreaming up for the last year, come screaming out from the back of his mind, crashing into the front of his brain like some stressful race to see what bad thing can be confirmed first.
De break ainâ a break anymore; Mâfired from de school; she knows about Tyger Tiger; sheâs quittinâ de X-men for de Avengers; Magneto got her pregnantâ
Itâs a lot of effort to not visibly panic. Not that she could tell; her stare is far away, going right through him.
âRogue,â he interrupts her. âI know yâ ainâ ever been good at talkinâ âbout yâ feelings anâ what not.â At least, heâs assuming thatâs where this is going. Itâs about the only thing she admits to being terrible at. âMais, I forced yâ into enough conversations about âem tânotice.Â
"Yâ said youâll talk tâme when yâ ready. Yâ lookinâ like me in church,â he jokes, âSo Iâm thinkinâ yâ ainât ready yet, non? So⊠donâ push yourself.â
"No, ah'm ready. Ah ain't pushin' mah'self or ah wouldn't be here, sugah. You know me better than that." She looked up, meeting his gaze with her own. She wasn't going to back down now, the words she had to say he already knew, it was a matter of saying them. That was the tricky part.
She stood up, suddenly deciding that she didn't want to sit down. She moved to stand before him, hands still crossed over her chest.
"It ain't no surprise anyway, what ah have to say y'already know." He did, she was sure of it. She knew she could hide a lot from him if she wanted to but this, it was different.
He knew her too well, something she hated at times.
"Ah came here t'tell you, well ah didn't mean all ah said last night. Ah still love you, Remy. That ain't ever gonna change, things are real complicated and ah know you're just givin' me the space ah asked for but, ah guess ah just wanted you to know that." That had come out like a mess.
Ring Around
"Time foâ yâ? Always."
When she asks if he worries, Remy only smiles in response. Does he worry. Mon Dieu. This whole thing has probably given him an ulcer. Though thatâs not why the butterflies she gives him sudden becomes a hornetâs nest. He canât see the future anymore, but Remy is not foreseeing anything good coming from this conversation. They never have before.
"Whatâs on de pretty ladyâs mind?" That all said, however, he canât deny her shit. He turns his chair to face her and gestures to the bed if sheâd like to take a seat.Â
She walked over to take a seat on the edge of the bed, crossing one leg over the other as she leaned her arms on her leg. Her green eyes never fell from his form although they seemed out of focus. She was looking at him but it was as though she was looking through him.
She was thinking of what she would say to him, what she had to say. The complications it could bring. There was so much to say yet she had so little words to offer.
"We gotta talk 'bout somethin', it's been on mah mind since the other night." She cleared her throat and looked up at him. She wasn't going to back down now, she had made it this far. She took a deep breath, raising a hand to run through her hair, smoothing it back. "Ah ain't ever been real good at this kind of thing. Listen, Remy. Ah've been thinkin' a lot about things..."
Ring Around
Remy cracks his neck, thankful to be nearly done with the second year French syllabus. To be honest, he hadnât expected enough of the kids to want to take a second year to warrant a second year. Oops. And now theyâre enough new kids to insert another first year of French?Â
Itâs like they want him to take this teaching thing seriously, or something. With a sigh, he discovers heâs once again out of coffee, and after trying to work through a few more language structure ideas, he relents to the fact that yes, caffeine is actually required if heâs going to get anything else done tonight. Just as heâs about to leave his desk and head to the kitchen, thereâs a knock on the door.
"Sâunlocked," he says, straightening some papers and closing the folder. Heâs just tossed the pen in its wire mesh holder when Remy turns in his chair, finding Rogue in the door way.
"Now, dis be a surprise.â He doesnât have to check the time to know itâs late. Not thatâs thereâs a clock to look at: with all the renovations, his room had been moved while he was away. Most of it remains packed, since he hasnât been present to unpack it. âEverytâing alright, Chere?â
She knew he was there, she always found him no matter where he went just like he could find her. It was funny, even after all this time they still knew so much about the way they worked, although it was no mystery this time. There were only a few places to check and this had been first on her list. She moved to the doorway, watching him for a moment before she cleared her throat and tried her best to smile.
Once upon a time, smiling hadn't been hard but these days, there were complications. With all they had been through, with all the school and the X-Men had been through, it was almost too much but no, it could never be too much.
Rogue was too stubborn, always a fighter even when she was down and that would never stop.
"Yeah, everything's alright. You worried 'bout me, Cajun?" She stepped into the room, arms crossed over her chest as she looked him over once again. "Do you got the time t'talk? Ah think there's a few things ah need to say, a few things ah need t'get off mah chest that ah didn't get the chance to." But he would see it coming, he always did. Sometimes, she wondered if he knew her better than she knew herself.
