Sorry #Subaru I cheated on you!
That one time I went to the Minnesota Fringe Festival, circa 2015
I asked a guy out today. He said yes. So I went straight back to eating pizza and watching anime while laying down in my bed. You can have both things in this world.

Hey pals! Please share! Please donate. Ensemble devised theater is my jelly and jam.
I had a beautiful night. two ninja gigs with Amanda Fucking Palmer. "Front" row, twice. I feel like it's all ruined because I got pulled over, white girl--- "literally" a mile away from my house. I feel like saying I'm not even a black man! Believe the white half of this girl....heh "woman." Because this makes me sound like a child. The cop said he saw me driving and talking on my cellphone. The cop saw wrong. Literally. I wasn't. I know this as truth. God knows this as truth. The cop has his "truth." I feel so... Violated. Which, in today's times, I don't even feel like I can/ have the right to say. Sonja, it was a warning. Get over it. But the cop saw wrong. He's wrong! Like fuck his attitude, fuck that he's working at 2:30am, fuck his badge, fuck his "time on the force," fuck his training. You.saw.wrong. And its this half white girl said this and even bigger white male cop said that. Then I see how stupid I somewhat am. Young black men are being slaughtered because they walk with a hoodie up and candy in their hand. And it's like, getting a warning ticket isn't anything. ANYTHING!!!! It's nothing. NOTHING! NOTHING COMPARED TO. A. LIFE!!! I just feel... Violated. I can only understand what happens in my life. I can have sympathy for things I see. I can only have empathy if I can experience. I will never be a young black man minding my own business walking home with my hoodie up and candy in my hand. I just feel like to justify any of my feelings... No matter how small The cop didnt see what he thought he saw. The cop was wrong. The cop was wrong. The cop was wrong. And I was telling the truth.
Hi I noticed a post on your tumblr about couch surfing and wanted to know your opinion on it and how safe it is for females travelling alone. I am asking as I planning on travelling alone and save money on accommodation by giving couch surfing a try. I would really appreciate your reply. Thank you!
Hey there!
Thanks for your question. When I was surfing westward to California from my native Illinois, I spent weeks before my 15 day solo road trip planning what sites I would see and what people I would stay with. I used couch surfing, because it was a free option for me. I spent a little over $300 bucks on gas. So not paying for a hotel/motel saved me a lot of $$$! I was concerned too, being a young female traveling alone. As I have come to learn CS verifies and I think, even background checks hosts. Or at least those with a little green check or yellow star. I mostly stayed with people who had a lot of reviews and had hosted a variety of people. I even had a few phones calls with people I wanted to stay with. Because they were interested on how long I would be there and things like that. Something not always a short e-mail can convey. Back when I used CS, your hosts address was not readily available, you had to ask. And that part always seems scary. I Googled that address right away! Was it even real? I looked through their photos. Did they look nice? Seem nice? Seem like they would want to host me? I surfed with a variety of genders and ages! Everyone from Scott that went to Wyoming University to Rob in North Platte Nebraska to a 50 year old sufi goofy lady named Dot Campbell in Blue Lake, California.
Above all, you need to feel comfortable.
I stayed in a warehouse, on tiny couches, on a vibrating bed all to myself. I had hosts leave me their keys to their homes and just leave...me...alone. Because they have lives too! It’s hard to get someone to drop everything your entire length of stay to “show you around.” I’ve meet a host at a bar and then followed them, an hour away back to their house. (He was in a band performing the night I had come, it was last minute for him and he felt bad, but . . .being independent and flexible is a must. Then I’ve had hosts who just want to show me this and that and buy me dinner and I was so appreciative, but then again, it was like, I just want to explore this place through my own time.
I’ve backed out of staying somewhere. Not because I felt uncomfortable, but because I was so close to my destination that I just wanted to get there. And then I would be one place and I wanted another day rest, so asking an extension was also a tad scary, but no one ever said no.
I think I made a good surfer because at least one night while I stayed with them, I would make dinner, as a show of thanks. It was simple, cheap dish money wise, but it was a great conversation and I always left an index card with the recipe for next time!
Um, I think I’ve rambled long enough. But please shoot me another message, if you would like me to go into depth about anything!

dear followers, it's been a great journey. But now, it's time for a new one to begin. This is Le Tigra. I bought her November 12th, 2013. Viper has been laid to rest- put to auction. She was a great little car. Viper was the reason this tumble was started. Le Tigra is the reason it will continue.
Thank you for your support.

Sonjas Subaru Journey 2.0
Even though I was expecting my 95 Subaru to die in California it's still kickin '. Therefore come this June 9th, 2013 (cross yo' fingers) there will be another journey. But this time BACK to Chicago. OoooO.
I will have graduated from clown school.
And perhaps this time I'll take my sister along with me.
God speed-- on a bicycle!
Hey! I see that you do some couch surfing and was wondering if you had any advice about it? My friend and I want to travel a bit around the states and we were wondering how this whole couch surfing thing works exactly and whats safe and what not. Get back to me if you can and happy travels! :)
Hi there! First off, thanks for your message! Now, Couch Surfing is all about what you want to do and who you want to meet. When I did my first Couch Surfing experience I spent a good portion planning my 15 day road trip from Chicago to Calfornia. I made plenty of stops, but then stayed there for more than just a night. I found I liked that a whole lot better. People are willing to host you they are on that site for a reason. I almost never found myself uncomfortable with any of my hosts. The surfaces and places you'll sleep will vary. I've done basements, the family living room, the extra guest room, and even a warehouse with a sofa in it. Couch Surfing can be anything you want it to be. You can even just stay with all women or people just your age. Please check their references and hell even contact the people they stayed with. No one really likes giving or receiving a bad reference, but you'll get the real deal from someone else that surfed with them.I brought food that wouldn't perish to share with my hosts. Even thought CS is free small favors like making your host dinner I found didn't stretch my pocket and they loved gaining a new recipe for themselves. Other times a host has taken me out to dinner just for because! Now I traveled solo which brought others challenges and rewards. I had a hosts take me hiking, rock climbing, frisbee golfing, and out to Circus Circus in Reno. But I've also had hosts that are graduate students or work full time. So they literally hand you keys to their house or tell you when they get off and to meet them at such and such place. So being independent is a must. Find a way to entertain yourself if your hosts is unable to show you around. I had to remember that they too had lives and couldn't always be there. But do ask a host to make a list of things to do while they are out.Or you can always free surf. And just go we're the wind takes ya.And Couch Surfing says something like this itself. If you ever feel uncomfortable. Leave. Just leave. You don't even need to give an explanation. But communication in this community is key. Get their phone numbers and addresses right away. I always added that my dates were flexible just in case I got lost or wanted to stay with the previous host a night longer.People want to hear from your stories too. We are all travelers. And as cheesy as it sounds we are all just trying to help eachother out.I also found that gasbuddy.com also saved me money on gas.Let me know if you have any more questions!-Sonja
Sonja is one of the happiest people I have ever met in my life. Her smile and good natured attitude can be quite contagious! Let her crash on the couch for a few nights while she was making her journey to humboldt. Also took her up to Tahoe for the first time. She even was nice enough to give my friend josh a ride to Shasta.
This is what one of my couch surfing hosts roommates, in Reno Nevada, had to say about me. A little late, but always super appreciated.
The Subaru Journey: Day Nine- Blue Lake, California
The guy that I am living with is pretty laid back. And I think we'll get along just fine. For now, though, I'll be on my toes. And just super respect his things and where everything is before I naturally just start adding my own touches and self into the space.
Part of me does wish I could have lived with Dot and the rest of the sufi community. I just couldn't throw down that much rent. The room was perfect and that energy was perfect. And Dot was already doing me such a huge favor by reducing the rent for me already, but even with that, I still just couldn't do it. But staying positive, I'm in Blue Lake. I think that's what matters. I can finally be a part of a community.
Even though I just arrived, I'm not sure if Humboldt county is right for me-- in the long run I mean. And that's o.k. I think I love it more, because for months this is where I was suppose to end up. This whole journey was meant to come to this point. So it's not that I was expecting so much to happen, but it truly is starting over and finding those people and places that can be mine in some sort of way. And I almost cried when I spoke to Jess on the phone today. So I know I miss Wheeling, Illinois and Athens, Ohio. I just got to keep myself busy. And I need to find a bed and dresser ASAP!
But soon enough Blue Lake will be the place I'll never want to leave again. But that's the thing with "these places." I'm only meant to learn here and because of the nature of my craft, I'm also meant to keep on moving and creating elsewhere. The education might be wasted if I didn't physically go somewhere else to do it. These places (Blue Lake and Athens) are meant for me to return to later in life. And I think that's o.k. and I think that's what they are meant to be for me.
And because it needs to be said, being straight edge in Humboldt is going to be hard or least really annoying to always to explain and say "No thank you." It took two years in Athens for people to finally "get it." It's super easy to be social by drinking and smoking weed. The lather I've never partaken in. I kind of feel like I would be great at trimming. I would have no desire what-so-ever to steal and on that same note, I wouldn't be cool being paid in dank buds. Naw what I mean? But for now, I'll try to find a night job flipping burgers or making bagels. I'll nearly do anything to help my parents out.
In anycase school starts September 29th. At which point I'll probably start a new Tumblr as this Subaru Journey is coming to an end. I'll soon write my letter to Subaru Incorporated about this journey and then that will be it. It's been real y'all. And I love everyone. Oh and always remember. . .
DAMN EVERYTHING BUT THE CIRCUS!
-Sonja
New friends in Humboldt County. These two, along with Trevor (not pictured and my actual couch surfing host) have given me a place to stay, food to eat, friendship and great conversation. Now that I'm on my feet I owe it all to these lovely people. Blue Lake won't be so bad after all.
This is where I slept in Arcata, California. Couch surfing is the greatest journey ever.
