Second chance Chuds VS Bury it all Chads
Before I realized how awful Leith really was, there were two moments where he genuinely scared me
The first one, from disappearance.
Without a single spoken word this man exudes cold menace.
The Innovation department is not happy. I am not happy.
With the influence "innovation" has over this company particularly it's more...cultish aspects, you can feel the menacing aura dripping off this man. He knew that Huggy's escape nearly blew everything for them, and he wants to make everyone sure they know it.
This was our first hint that Leith Pierre was not just a "funny bad guy" or "goofy side villain". He had power. And like all good abusers, he knew how to intimidate others with it.
The second one is from Incident Aftermath. Actually, Leith is terrifying in that entire tape.
This ARG dialogue, posted by Mob on Twitter, he intimidates Stella. While normally I don't care much for Stella, the way Leith talks over her, intimidates her, and clearly frightens her in a way that isn't made conveyable by the text.
Leith's evil does not cackle.
He's rotten, entitled, cruel sadistic bully who knows how to use fear and power to control people.
If you've ever been intimidated like that it is terrifying.

here goes my series of PPT arts I did to try the new technique and to use them for the pricelist showcase
those are pretty quick to draw and yet they look kinda cool I think
Hi, I've been reading a lot of what you've said and detailed about Harley Sawyer, and I'm honestly amazed. I'm also a big fan of his, not for what he did, but for his story. I think he's a character with a level of development unlike any other in the game's lore. Now, I'm writing because I was looking at his robot design and… something immediately came to mind. Don't you think his design is kind of a "mockery" for him? Let me explain: I think his design is intended for him to walk on all fours, initially, because of the shape of his elongated arms and his feet, which also resemble hands. Perhaps I'm wrong, I hope yes, but maybe the executives and scientists initially wanted him to walk on all fours, but Harley managed to find a way to walk on two. Sorry if this doesn't make any sense, but his design really intrigues me.
And please excuse my bad English, I'm trying to use a translator too.
Regards!
Yeah absolutely! ALLEGEDLY they were going to use his bodies for procedures, but you're right. It makes no sense to make them twice the size of a regular human (and would make procedures more difficult). The back is hunched and the vertebrae stick out from his spine awkwardly. When he moves, he runs with an awkward, lurching stride :( The entire body was specifically designed to mock him. With Harley, the problem was that he didn't care how his test subjects felt about their new bodies, not that he actively wanted to make it humiliating as possible for everyone. That man did not care.
If they had applied the same principal and made some part of the body humiliating in a way that showed lack of care rather then active sadism, I would say it would be equal, but the sheer amount of malice and petty bullying throughout Harley's time as an experiment makes Harley's situation feel less and less like satisfying karma to me. I wouldn't be so bugged about it if the new body had been humiliating in a way that had just shown a detachment to Harley's feelings. That would at least be more symmetrical. But, no, they clearly wanted to humiliate him. A huge, awkward, lurching robot with the man who clings to prestige like a lifeline? Yeah, I think it would have been less humiliating if they had made him into a toy. Not less humiliating by much...but much less targeted and unfair.
The Truth of "Innovation is Key"
"Innovation is Key" is a corporate slogan. It's Playtime's slogan.
as shown in the ON. This is where INNOVATION IS KEY originated from.
and "Golden Path" was NOT just something Harley was ranting about. This was corporate language.
INNOVATION IS KEY is a reference to the Playtime Cult!
So these four lines, they almost feel like a poem, or a chant, or…or something. There's kind of a rhythm to them when I speak them out loud.
INNOVATION IS KEY. WE ARE BORN ANEW. INNOVATION IS KEY. THANK YOU SCIENCE. INNOVATION IS KEY. MAY WE FORGET DEATH. INNOVATION IS KEY. FOLLOW THE GOLDEN PATH.
I mean, any workplace that has this creepy recitation is kind inherently cult like. And then we saw Leith's hiring letter to Harley. And we saw INNOVATION IS KEY branded inside Harley's head, even being the word that caused Harley to get sent on a thought loop.
And we saw how Chloe slowly got sucked into the cult:
She noted "some scientists here are nice, but a bit sad. I can't say exactly why." So they brought her there, and got her settled before actually explaining what she was going to do.
Playtime used a similar hook on her as they did with Harley - appealing to her ambition. (Though unlike Harley she realizes she's a monster): I know the offer was a strange one. And David, I know you're worried about me (you don't even need to say it, you've just ALWAYS been like that). But I really believe in this. Playtime sold me a vision that means something. Maybe even everything. It's not enough for me to just patent a thing and make a bit of money off it, then retire somewhere to teach it in a class where nobody really cares about what you've dedicated your life to. I need what I do to be more than that. Julie, I want you to be proud to have a Mommy like me. And I swear, I'm going to do just that. Promise to be home for your 9th birthday!"
The next note, not only did she break that promise, showing how she's steadily becoming more distant from her family: "I hope the harvest this year has been good to you and your father, and I'm sorry I missed your 9th at the start of the year. I've found myself missing home (like, a LOT)."
But also, the cultish environment has clearly had a negative impact on her: "Life here is so contained, so focused on the work and the end goals, that I have no time at all for a personal life. The goals of this project are grand. Beautiful, even. Everyone here talks about it with such passion, such zeal, that like me EVERYONE signed up for it without much question. The work itself, however, is nothing I can talk about openly. The processes themselves are difficult. I question it deeply, and I know I'm not the only one who does. Comforts are few in the Lab, and I think this has changed a lot of us. I know enough about what happens to a brain in isolation to know that's exactly what's happening here." Calling your corporate workplace's goals "grand" and "beautiful", and how everyone talks about them with "passion and zeal" that everyone signs up for it without much question is...disturbing. So already there's a bit of a hivemind going on here. So the workers were being kept in isolation, and Chloe has observed a "change" in them.
The final letter reveals her letters are scattered in the facility because she never actually sent any of them to Julie. "Pumpkin, I wanted to write this out, knowing full well that none of my letters have made it to you, and that I'm writing these now more for myself than you.
She talks about her issues with the horrifying experiments:
It's no secret that I've been struggling with all of this, I've tried talking to people here, and they've given me a lot to think on. The end goal of this project is a grand, beautiful thing: “To put an end to death.” If I can be a part of that and get it right, it would mean giving something truly monumental to the world."
But of course the other cultists are just going to give her pro Cult feedback. She repeats her "grand, beautiful" talk from before :| This also ties to MAY WE FORGET DEATH. "To me, what I'm doing here is my sacrifice for you. I've had to give a lot of myself up for this project. Do things I never thought I'd be capable of doing. I can't honestly say I'm any kind of good person anymore. Hell, I'm a monster." This ties in to the signs of Jessica, a former orphan of Playcare, having her whole life in Playtime and being unquestioningly loyal to the coroporation. The underground city being where many scientists are forced could be what Chloe is saying in regards to their isolation. This is why Leith always introduces himself as the head of Innovation. Innovation isn't a department: it's the center of the cult's "devotion".
In fact the ON both confirms that Innovation Key is a phrase originated from the Playtime Corporation (not the Prototype or the toys) and that Leith is linked to the chant
But the creepiest part? Is that INNOVATION IS KEY seems to have penetrated even Playtime Worker's thoughts. Or at least, Harley's thoughts. Harley hates Leith, so you would expect him, by 2002 (which is when these thoughts takes place to have washed his hands of Leith Pierre, right?) and anything relating to him, like "Innovation", right? Actually, no.
in the maze map, you can even see the word that causes him to start "thinking in circles" "like a looping record"
I'm not sure if this is even all the "INNOVATION IS KEY" in his head, but keep in mind this is Harley's raw stream of consciousness, and yet INNOVATION IS KEY just keeps showing up in his head. That ain't normal. Credit to @flouftie for pointing out when we were discussing Leith's role that Harley's mind is stuffed with INNOVATION IS KEY! I remember thinking about it, years ago when the ARG was playing out, but they brought me back to it with their observations :)
The Orphans were sometimes put in bodies of mascots that did not match their desired gender.
This was the "1188 Proposal" for Catnap.
Experiment 1188 Proposal is a set of notes that emerged from the "Leith Pierre Computer Search" ARG, which was created to tease Chapter 3: D
Now, Theodore was chosen to become Catnap in canon. But, the scientists had 12 candidates, and half of them have female names: On the last page we see these candidates:
Combined with what we know about conditioning...not just having to assume a different identity...but assume a different gender identity.
Now we see in Theodore's conditioning video how awful, how horrific it was, to be forced to forget his name and his true identity.
Now imagine Jessica K, Hannah, Rachel, Rebecca, or Emily in Theo's place having to also be attempted to "condition" away their gender identity as well. (If you haven't seen it give it a watch)
If the scientists didn't care about alligning Catnap's orphan with their gender identity, imagine how many kids actually were put in bodies. We can't really assume Pianosaurous, Boxy, or Miss Delight's test subjects were male or female based on their toys gender identities, because the scientists didn't care. And that just makes it so much worse for those poor kids.
For the kids who were put in bodies of mascots whose genders did not allign with them:

Harley is Not Lazy Compilation
Of all the many allegations levied against Harley, I decided to start with the most minor and inconsequential, as well as possibly the only allegations we can actually truthfully say are false.
Number 1, From Elliot:
Number 2, From Elliot:
Number 3, From Lockharte:
Number 4, From The Prototype: "You beat us. Burn us. Tear at flesh. Do you feel it?"
While Harley did not have his Miranda Rights read to him before acknowledging on the record that he did in fact cut, burn, and tear at the flesh, it is accurate and does show that-proving Harley not guilty of laziness by pointing out a much worse crime! *Sigh*
(Personally would rather be guilty of laziness then of beating/burning/tearing other people, but...) Number 5: Harley was so adamant that he do some specific surgery by himself that it made its way into the BBI Proposal document.
Number 5, From the ARG: Harley, internally resents the idea of merely sitting idly.
While I can see Harley grandiosely absorb himself into something and overvalue his important (another strong potential indicator of mental unwellness) One example is when he tells the executives, "When I look at this company we've built"
He has only been at the factory for a few months when he says this, and the company is six decades old.
Note though that he says this directly to people who know better, and he doesn't appear to be "patting himself on the back", after inserting himself into the history of the company being built, he follows up with, "I do not feel proud." This statement is far too transparent for Harley to be coldly stealing credit (like Bruno does later on). Making it feel like in Harley's egotistical (possibly grandiose or narcissistic, but I won't label anything) mind, he has built this 60 year old company alongside the executives...somehow. So I can see Harley overvaluing his work, and Chloe disliking that, but he wouldn't just, stand by and do nothing. That's what about her phrasing angers me.
It's why in The Doctor Cinematic Trailer, Harley mentally categorizing The Prototype along with the BBI experiments as "MY CREATIONS" might not be a continuity error. If my speculation about Harley suffering from grandiose delusions is correct, then he might actually have decided that the Prototype is his creation, even though he literally has to rip apart Prototype's flesh to try and figure out how he works, and even if Elliot is the one responsible for Prototype, and even if he wasn't working at the company when Elliot resurrected Oliver as the Prototype, the prototype is his creation now, logic be darned.
This is a very common grandiose delusion, to sort of "absorb" yourself or see your achievements as slightly exaggerated or inaccurate. But I will refrain from diagnosing Harley.
So I can see what she might have been trying to say, "he gives himself more credit then he should" but that's NOT what she said. She implied that he did nothing and just forced others to do all the hard work while he kicked back his feet and stole credit! That's NOT who Harley Sawyer is. He is horrible, but he is one hard working guy.
He wouldn't simply be "letting" other people "break their back" implies he wasn't part of it.
Furthermore I note that, despite Chloe being at the factory for a few weeks, it appears she doesn't yet know about the orphan experiments yet and hasn't actually worked with Harley in his area of work when she wrote this.
Why can I say this for sure? In the first letter where Chloe slanders Harley as lazy...she says the scientists are sad, but she doesn't know why.
Next letter, it's made pretty clear she has in fact found out why they are sad:
If she's never seen Harley in his domain of horrific orphan experiments, then she would only have seen him, likely standing around looking self-satisfied without knowing who he is or what he does, and concluded he does nothing and is simply looking pleased with himself over others hard labor.
I also notice she doesn't mention Harley again after this letter. She probably wouldn't have liked him much still, given he wasn't one of the regretful scientists, and she was part of the rebellion, which is full of people who seem to like to focus on how outright bad he is, to make themselves feel better.
It's also sad and ironic that if Chloe met the Brain Trust, she would also have met Bruno, the real leech of the bunch, but because Harley is socially awkward enough to sit around and posture for people who he is forbidden to actually tell them about his work, and Bruno seems charming, kind, and doesn't blurt out achievements that have been grandiosely distorted, he slips by.
I'll share a skit I posted in PPT discord for a bit of very very dark comedy:
Chloe on Harley before she sees what Harley really does: "Eh. paper pusher who coasts off our hard labor." Chloe after she sees what Harley really does: "OH SHOOT. OH NO. THIS IS MUCH MUCH WORSE THEN THAT." Harley: covered in blood "I'm so happy I can finally share my own labor with you! Did you think I was merely sitting idly?" Chloe: "I WISH YOU HAD BEEN."
last time I drew a black person (Gus from TOH) I got criticized, and now, two years later, I'm taking another attempt with Harley

"Boxy would've eaten people if they tried to snitch" is a very overused excuse
Like, look, I get it, I'm willing to say that the threat of death factored into why people did stuff.
Everyone points to how Rowan Stoll was snapped up, but people, the reason Rowan was caught was not because Playtime telepathically sensed he had a disloyal thought and then had Boxy materialize infront of him.
IT WAS BECAUSE HE SENT LEITH PIERRE VIDEO REPORTS OF HIS INVESTIGATION.
YES. THAT LEITH PIERRE. The one in charge of the secret experiments. Boxy catching Rowan Stoll was not some telekinetic "Playtime instantly senses rebels" thing. It was because Rowan trusted the one person who could immediately send Boxy to him on command.
Rowan Stoll: "Already just got- Oh I'm on! Hello Mr. Pierre! Um look, I know you don't want to hear any more about this, I get it. Um, sounds like a bad joke, Huggy Wuggy staring at children. But… look I'm filming this so… so I can hopefully prove what I saw. Look, if some… if some creep is hiding Nanny cams in our mascot's eyeballs, then something needs to be taken seriously. Uh, something dangerous is going on and I… I'm sure it wasn't on purpose, I'm sure it was just some big mistake, but… I saw what I saw. And… and I… I'm positive about that, and, uh, I know if you could see it too, I think you'll understand."cghj,
That's like if in Star Wars someone randomly sent Emperor Palpatine video updates of the rebel plans -_-
"Alright Palps, we're gonna blow up the death star now-Wait. HOW DID THEY KNOW ABOUT OUR PLANS?"
LOL! anyway,
PW was able to rebel for years without getting detected by Boxy along with the other rebels.
Honestly, though, I think Rowan was less stupid then Preston. Rowan just trusted the wrong person and overeshared a bit too much in his private logs. If someone had Rowan's heart and Preston's ability to keep secrets...maybe this wouldn't have gotten so bad.
also, like, geez, really? Hundreds of kids being tortured down here, that's something worth giving your life for.
"Is there something out there for us? Or is this it?"
I think the Prototype is deliberately leaning into the "we've got blood on our hands now" as justification to isolate from society:
NOBODY LEAVES THAT WORLD ISN'T OURS
CAST ASIDE THE OLD WORLD LIVE LIKE WHAT YOU ARE
"Now our nightmares are real, and we'll never wake up for we've torn apart."
After exploring a legal ending for Harley I think that it goes all the more without saying I think that I can't pretend everything would be perfect if the experiments were exposed to the public, but legally HOJ participants probably would be given some mitigation. Using their post-experimentation violence ("we'll never wake up for we've torn apart") to justify isolation…well…
I'm not sure if I agree with it. I don't pretend that everything would be fine if the massacre were exposed...but legally the law does have compassion on such people. I know that sometimes the law doesn't always get carried out fairly, but...I believe it.
For one, they were children. Brainwashed children. Traumatized children.
Huggy was literally being coerced into murdering toys by Ms. Gracie, almost definitely to normalize "killing" for him. Boxy's appetite was "tailored to flesh".
Even Kevin's initial reaction to the Ayers parents was trying to get them to leave before lashing out at them in a body he'd only been awake for a few days in. They were deliberately giving these kids very large, powerful bodies and teaching them to USE them. The Hour Of Joy even echoes Playtime's "joy" rhetoric, which could explain how they were able to act in such unison. Prototype repurposed their brainwashing. Plus, The Prototype spearheading The Hour Of Joy and forcing reluctant toys to kill even innocent employees (Giblet) would make it clear that the kids didn't just decide to kill everyone.
Prototype as well would have mitigation as the Playtime scientists and Elliot Ludwig hurt and coerced him.
Now in the "are the toys adults" debate, regardless of what side you take, there is one thing that is undeniable: Arrested development.
Kids need normal childhoods surrounded by kindness and family and friends to develop properly socially and emotionally. Not only were they brainwashed by the company even before that, but traumatic events can pause or distort development. This can affect mental state at the times of crimes even if they technically understood.
I can't pretend everyone would be OK with the toys if HOJ came out (even though they deserve all the love and support) But in a just, ideal world...the law would not vilify them. As it shouldn't.
"IT CAN BE REAL FOR US A BETTER PLACE"
