UMA ÓTIMA SEMANA PARA VOCÊ ❤️
The last episode of Rick and Morty confirmed something the fanbase has already suspected for a while. An offhand comment by memory Rick revealed that Beth died and Rick is living with an “abandoned adult Beth” like the other “creeps”. In other words, Rick C-137 wasn’t native to the dimension we started season 1 in and by extension Morty isn’t “his” Morty because he doesn’t have a Morty because Beth died when Rick was younger than 35. The memory seen in The Rickshank Redemption wasn’t as fabricated as Rick made it out to be.
It definitely throws a wrench into our understanding of the setting’s dynamics. If Beth and Diane’s death genuinely is the catalyst for Rick becoming a nihilistic multiverse-trotting superscientist, then it means every Rick isn’t a genuine part of the Smith family household. All of them hop into universes where Beth lived so they can claim it as their own like a hermit crab. This is why Ricks are so callous towards Morties. Not only because there’s an infinite amount of spares available, but because the very notion of having a grandson is just a hypothetical fantasy scenario they’re playing out which isn’t “reality”. I’d even wager that there’s only one Rick whose Beth grew up and who actually got to meet his Morty (hence the memory seen in Close Rick Counters of the Rick Kind), and every universe with a Smith family is a direct offshoot of that one since an infinitesimal fraction of infinity is still infinity. But what became of the Rick from that original seed universe? He’s probably dead. It would be sloppy work for any Rick to leave an open thread like that. But the Morty from there might be Evil Morty.
