Hello all! This blog is devoted to work on the comic Sons of Fire, written by Adam L. Garcia and drawn by myself, Heidi Black. I will be posting concept sketches and process work. Also look for tidbits and extras that won't appear in the final comic.
Set in the late 1970s, Sons of Fire is a dark reimagining of the origin of the superhero, exploring the ambiguity of morality and the violent price of power.
The lone survivor of a fire that took his brother and father, Jacob Crowe is unable to forgive himself for leaving his family to die. It is only when he discovers his friend Andrew Danner is something more than human that he sees a way toward redemption. But for Andrew, the life of hero risks exposing his secrets to the world, leading him down a path that will make him question his humanity and reveal the monster he truly is.
Together they begin a dark journey that will lead them from the boys they are to the men they will become, a journey that will reveal that the difference between hero and villain are lines they’re willing to cross. Because when evil isn’t black and white, even heroes will burn...
While Sons of Fire isn’t the only “no capes, no spandex” story, it draws inspiration from classic works such as Philip Wylie’s Gladiator, merging superhero, historical-fiction, horror, and coming-of-age genres to create a unique tale that explores the nature of modern superheroes. This is a story about humans, where the protagonist isn’t the super powered hero, but rather a broken boy who stands up against impossible odds, sacrificing everything for what is right.
