“So the other day, one of my students asked me how many cats do I have…” Margot’s words trailed off for a brief moment, as she glanced up from the dress that she was looking at. “I’ve never told them that I have cats.” A short laugh left her lips as she thought about her student’s unintentional barb at her. “Be honest, do I come off as a cat lady?” This was a silly question coming from a woman that made it her mission to at least have four cats named after the ninja turtles and with realizing that thought, she laughed again. “…Actually don’t answer that. There are some things better left unsaid.–What do you think about this dress? Is it a little too conservative? If so, perfect. My mother will love it.”

Sophie was out shopping with Margot looking at dresses. She wanted to get something new, but she was still struggling with the scar that was quite visible in most everything she owned. She was still in her sling most of the time as well, so it was a bit of a challenge. Sophie chuckled. “No, not completely. But sometimes you do show up with cat hair on your sweater, so maybe thats it?” She said laughing. “Its so not you. So yes perfect for your mom.” She nodded. “I am thinking this one for me.” She said pulling a turtleneck sweater dress off the rack, something not her style, but that would totally cover up her scar and allow her to feel a little less self conscious.

“The last time you were cooler than me, you were seventeen.” Kennedy rolled her eyes and concealed her smile behind a bite of food so that Sophie wouldn’t see. “I know, isn’t that insane? My life is changing really fucking quick and it scares the shit out of me.” It didn’t really occur to Kennedy that Sophie might be jealous of her at all, because Kennedy hadn’t planned any of this and it was all happening so fast that it felt more nerve wrecking than anything else. “God, don’t be so sappy. I know you’re proud and we’re doing this whole lovey dovey shit thing because you almost died but you’re fine now so knock it off.” Kennedy joked as she took another bite of her food. “We decided on Colette.” After many long discussions about how every name they liked could be used to bully a child in middle school, they settled on something that was delicate and pretty, two things they just knew their baby girl would be already.

Sophie feigned her feelings being hurt. “Kennedy Grace. You take that back, I have always been the cooler older sister.” Sophie knew it was probably more like 25 was the last time she was cooler, but she wasn’t going to give it to her. She smiled and appreciated the normalcy of them just being here at her place. “Fine. Don’t fuck it up. I’m not ready to be a mom, only a cool auntie. Better?” She said knowing her sister was joking, but knowing they had all been worried the same. “Colette. I like it. Lots of good nicknames can come from that, doesn’t rhyme with anything terrible, and isn’t some random wild shit like Shark.” She smiled sitting back. “So tell me about this house?” She asked, still a little bit in awe of how quickly Dylan and Kennedy fell into getting things right.

Seth smiled, chuckling a bit at her comment. “That’s all I can hope for.” He wasn’t sure where her flinch came from and attributed it to the injury for now. “Sorry.” He relaxed her arm and moved to jot something down for a quick moment before reaching for her arm again. “You might have some nerve sensitivity from where they put you back together. we’re going to check this way. How has your day been so far?” He asked, making light conversation as he checked her mobility is different ways and wrote a couple of more things down. “Alright, Sophie. Let’s step into the area over there and I’ll show you some stretched you can do to help until our next visit. Don’t think of it as homework.” He joked as they headed out of the examination cubicle into a space with exercise equipment and a couple other physical therapists as well as patients. “Do you have any resistance bands at home?”

Sophie smiled. ‘Its ok. Isn’t that part of the job? No pain no gain or something like that.” She tried to laugh it off, but it was definitely the truth. She still had some pain from the surgery, especially when she moved it certain ways. Which in this moment seemed to be all the ways he was moving her around. She was sure some of it was just her muscles crying out from lack of use. “Homework?” She fake groaned with a small laugh. “I do. It was about the only kind of work the doc would clear me to do, exercise wise. Although, most of the ones I have for leg work.” She told him, knowing that she had definitely been using those as much as she could. She hated the idea that she wasn’t able to work out everyday like she was before.

“Sophie.” Seth nodded, correcting himself. He went by a first name basis with most of the patients there, but never assumed they would be okay with it right off the bat. “That’s why we’ll do the assessments today and reevaluate from there, but that’s usually the length of physical therapy for someone with your shoulder injury.” Seth knew it could be disappointing to hear, so his voice was sympathetic. “Hard work will lead to steady progress which will hopefully reduce your visits here.” Not that he would mind seeing her more often when she smiled like that. “I’ll have you take a seat there.” Seth heled her up on the flatbed. He knew that there was a lot of trauma that came with what she experience and most of it didn’t have anything to do with the physical. “If you’ll take your sling and jacket off, we’ll begin. I’m going to put my hands on your shoulder and move your arm around, okay?” Seth waited for her and then took hold of her injured arm, making sure to be cautious but also firm enough to move her arm out. “Let me know when you start to feel pain.” He said and slowly started to lift her elbow up first to see how the movement rotated her shoulder.

Sophie nodded. She sighed. “Ok, well, I will trust your professional opinion and follow the rules. Or try to anyway.” She felt a little defeated hearing that it was probably still a two month time frame, just based on her injury. He seemed kind and empathetic so far, which only made it that much harder for her to concentrate. She had heard him say something else, but it took a moment for her to process. “Oh, ok um sure.” She said as she carefully took off her jacket and the sling setting them carefully on the chair before sitting on the table again. She didn’t mean to stiffen her entire body, but it was a reaction she had developed since her injury when anyone touched her. As he began to move her arm, she tried to hold back the reaction, but she winced as he lifter her arm to move shoulder. “A little twinge with that.” She said.

Unfortunately, Seth had more clients post-ball than before but the good thing was that everyone he saw was on their way to recovery— which couldn’t be said for everyone accidentally involved in the shooting. He took the chart for his next patient, thanking the nurse for handing it to him. Sophie Anne Marshall, he noted. He knew who she was, but it was hard to come by any local he wasn’t somewhat familiar with. After a couple of minutes, Seth walked into one of the therapy rooms and set up, only to stop when he heard her walk in. “Welcome, Miss Marshall.” He took a couple of steps forward to meet her with a handshake on her non-injured arm. “This will be your first time here, correct? Take a seat, I’ll give you a rundown of what we’ll be working on for the next several weeks.” Seth waited for her to settle in and then continued. “We’ll have three checkups before you’re treatment is up. One will be today, a month from now, and the last one at two months. We’ll be checking your range of motion, doing some measurement tests for strength and functionality, and analyzing your arn’s functional mobility. Do you have any questions do far?”

Sophie nodded at his question, getting lost in his eyes for a moment, before reminding herself, she was not here to date the man, but to get back to normal. She was here to do the work so she could just be Sophie again and not the girl who was shot at the ball. She wanted to get back to the place where she no longer had to wear the sling and could just be her. “Yes Mr Reynolds it is.” She nodded. “And please call me Sophie.” She added. She sat down where he indicated and listened to him closely. Two more months, she wasn’t sure she could handle two more months of this. She hoped that in a week or two she could ditch the sling altogether. “Is it really going to be another two months of this?” She indicated the sling she was wearing. “Its just, its been three months already and I just would really like to put all of this behind me and get back to normal. I need to get back to normal.” She told him. She was definitely struggling with not being herself completely, a lot more than she was letting on to anyone.

Where: Asteria General Physical Therapy

Sophie was coming in for her first day of physical therapy. She was ready to get back to normal and was going to do everything and anything she could to get back to where she was before. She was finally out of the very restrictive sling she had been in that kept her immobile, into one she could actually move around in. The name on the paper was familiar, small town and all, but the face she couldn’t think of the face to go with the name. She made her way into the PT department at the hospital. The staff at the desk led her to the back where her therapist was. She pointed out Seth and Sophie stopped in her tracks. While she didn’t know Seth, she knew who he was. No one could be that good looking in town without everyone knowing who they were. She drew in a deep breath, glad she decided to put herself together completely before she approached him. “Seth Reynolds?” She questioned as she approached the other man. “I’m Sophie Marshall, you 2pm.” She told him as she approached him with a soft small.

kennedymarshall:

“Please, we’re gonna such cool fuckin’ parents.” Kennedy grinned, knowing already that when her kid was a teenager they’d be the house where all the kids were allowed to drink if they stayed in the house and that her daughter would be allowed to wear anything she wanted and make her own curfew. “Not yet. He’s at my house most of the time though honestly. And we’re going to look at a few houses this weekend to look at putting an offer in. Crazy that a few weeks ago we were just figuring out what our relationship was like and now we’re having a baby and buying a house.” She shook her head and took another bite of her food with a sigh. “Makes me feel so fuckin’ old.”

“I’m sure you will. But Auntie Sophie will still be cooler.” She chuckled. She took another bite from the food before setting the fork back down. Her appetite was just not what it was before the shooting. “Buying a house? Wow.” She said nodding. That was more than she expected. Of course she as excited for her sister and she would be supportive of everything she had going in her life, but she couldn’t help the twinge of jealousy and the feeling of failure that came over her as she listed to her younger sister talk about things she should be doing in her life. “You are not old. You are just a grow up Ken. Its amazing. I’m so proud of you.” She told her as she reach across with her good arm and gave her sisters hand a small squeeze. “You guys are made for each other and I am so happy you finally figured it out.” She added. “So, tell me again what this little princesses name is going to be?” She asked her.

Kennedy kept one hand on her little belly that was just barely showing now as she ate and listened to Sophie talk. “Well this baby is gonna be lucky to have such an amazing person as you for their auntie.” Sophie was Kennedy’s role model for most of her life, still was if she was honest, and she already knew that her daughter would be lucky to be loved by her. “How’s the food?” She asked after a moment of silence as they ate, hoping that it was better than the shit they’d been feeding her poor sister in the hospital at least.

Sophie smiled at her. “Well, I will be the fun aunt, the one she calls when mommy and daddy are being mean.” She teased. “So she will love me the most.” She said with a nod. She took a bite of the food. She ate a few bite slowly and nodded. “It is really good.” She told her, but set her fork down. She hadn’t had much of an appetite since everything happened. But she was trying to eat a little more, especially since the food was so much better than the hospital. “How are you? Are you and Dylan living together yet?” She asked, assuming that it was a forgone conclusion it would be happening.

ophelia--marshall:

Ophelia wanted to hug her eldest sister so badly in that moment but restrained herself for obvious reasons. “Are you sure?” She asked quietly, waiting for confirmation before she started talking. “I ended things. I didn’t want too. But he lied right to my face, Soph. And I caught him with drugs at the ball and-I just can’t. I can’t be with him if he’s putting himself at risk. I told Rosemary, and, I know, not the nicest thing to do but I’m terrified he’s going to get hurt and if I can’t get through to him I think she might be the only person who can.” The brunette broke off shaking her head and waiting for how her sister would react to the information.

Sophie nodded. “Yes. I’m sure.” She told her. She listened as her youngest sister spoke. She let her speak and say everything she was going to say, not wanting to interrupt her. When she finished she looked at her sad for her sister. “I’m sorry Phee that you are having to deal with this.” She sighed. “At least you told his mom and not ours.” She said looking at her. “I wish I could help make it better. But I’m afraid this is one of those lessons he is going to have to learn. And you are going to meet a man that will definitely do better by you. I know it.” She nodded.

Perfectly plucked eyebrows furrowed together in an irritated frown the bruentte hissed into her phone as she sat in front of her coffee that was rapidly going cold in her mug. She hadn’t exactly planned on getting a call from the office when she’d agreed to this meet up. “No…no…alright it’s really not something to get so fucking tense about. Whatever, sure, get it dropped at mine by seven. Bye.” Stabbing the end call button with a manicured nail she looked up again, eyeing the plate in front of her like the cake on it might jump up and bite her if she didn’t keep it under observation. “So you’re telling me this isn’t going to taste like death? Because it sure as hell looks like it.” Tentatively reaching out she broke off a small fraction of the food, putting it into her mouth gingerly.

Sophie had made her way out into the world. It was something she was struggling with as of late, but the pain in her shoulder was subsiding some now and she had some movement back, even though she was in a sling still, she decided to head out. She was holding her coffee standing next to a table when someone she didn’t know started talking to her. Sophie looked at her for a moment and then shrugged. “I don’t think anything they make her tastes like death.” She told the other, refraining from rolling her eyes, even though she wanted to.

Sophie lay back on the bed her breathing still a bit ragged, a few tears pricking the corners of her eyes, but she did her best to try and calm down. The medication made the nightmares worse. Her brain went back to the shooting and she couldn’t get it back when she took the medication. She nodded her head slowly as Wyatt spoke to her. When he took her hand she felt that calm again, the one she had felt before. “I can. I’m sorry.” She told the nurse as she worked on slowing her breath back to a more normal pace. The nurse nodded. “I’ll be back to check on you in a few minutes.” She told them both before she left. Sophie looked over at Wyatt again. “I’m sorry Wy.” She told him. “You can go. Its ok. I’ll be ok.” She told him, embarrassed of how she had acted. Embarrassed that she couldn’t seem to take a simple nap without having an outburst.

“You have nothing to be sorry for.” He shook his head and pushed the frown away from his face. He hated the fact that she was there, that all that shit happened at the ball, and the fact that he couldn’t do more to keep life in Asteria from taking a one-eighty turn. He rubbed his thumb against her hand and nodded at her words. “I’ll make sure one of your sisters slips inside okay? Your parents, too.” He pulled her hand to his lips to press a kiss on the back of it before slipping out of her hospital room.

Once she had gotten her sister inside and settled on the couch, propping her up with pillows and draping a cozy blanket over her lap, Kennedy went to work setting the food out on the coffee table. It wasn’t hard to tell that Sophie was embarrassed and sad and trying to think about something else so Kennedy was quick to answer her question, making the conversation about her instead. “I’m fine I guess. Mildly terrified about fucking up and ruining this child’s life but I’m trying not to think about that. Best to get through the pregnancy part first I guess.” She handed Sophie a plate once she’d put some food on it and started making her own. “I really thought you would be the first one of us to have a baby so that I’d have someone to tell me how to get through it.”

Sophie was appreciative of her sister and her ability to read her today. They were definitely closest of the girls and today Sophie needed that. Kennedy didn’t push her to talk about things today and just let her be. She even took the hint and allowed the subject to be about her. “You are not going to fuck up this kid. You are going to be an amazing mom.” She told her reassuring her sister. She chuckled when she said she thought Sophie would be first. Honestly, so did she. But she could never seem to stay with someone log enough to even think about that possibility. “Yeah, me too.” She said with a small smile, holding back the sadness. “Besides, that baby is half Marshall so its gonna be bad ass no matter what.”

“Right. Sorry.” Ophelia couldn’t help but apologize again as she finally got settled and sat down opposite her eldest sister. Although she wanted to do anything she could that Sophie was asking her, the brunette wasn’t certain being totally honest and talking freely about what had been going on with her was the best thing. Sophie needed to be less stressed and upset, not more. And if Kennedy’s reaction had been any indication, talking about Oliver would probably not make her sister feel any better. “Of course, I can imagine it’s been a lot.” the youngest Marshall agreed empathetically. “Well, just trying to help out as much as I can making sure the library is running smoothly, trying to check in with people and see how everyone’s doing. Just a lot of those sort of things.” Ophelia was a terrible liar so instead of trying to fib to her eldest sister she was opting for a lie of omission in the hopes that would be less obvious.

Sophie sighed. “Phee, I know something is going on with you. Please don’t worry about this.” She indicated to her injury. “Talk to me.” She told her sister. “I’m glad you are keeping the library running. But I know that isn’t what has you so upset.” She told her. “So tell me what’s going on with you and Oliver.” She figured if she was going to get her to talk, she was going to have to ask her out right now. She could see that she was trying not to worry her, but Sophie honestly needed the distraction from her own mind. Helping her sister, would be helping her too.

Wyatt had to hold her down a bit as the nurse rushed in. “It’s okay, Soph.” Wyatt reassured her when she voiced her worry to the medical professional. “It’ll make things better.” He nodded and looked at the nurse who nodded back in response to his silent question: right? He couldn’t do anything for her, he didn’t know how, assuming that the professionals knew what they were doing. “It’s just pain medication right?” He asked the nurse who said she would put some pain medication into her IV, but they needed to give her a slight sedative to calm her down. “I can do that.” He shook his head. “You’re going to relax, Sophe. Yeah? Show her you can relax.” He pulled the back of her hand and kissed it.

“Since the day you were born, sissy.” Kennedy laughed and shook her head. Their mother had always been tough on them, as had their father, but they’d been told a hundred times over how having daughters had made them both so protective. Usually Kennedy might have pushed Sophie to tell her whatever it was she was asking the younger Marshall to just ‘forget’ but she decided not to today, keeping her eyes on the road as she drove. Once they had secured the food and Kennedy was back in the car, she drove them back across town to Sophie’s place and parked in her driveway next to Sophie’s own car. “Bet you can’t wait to sleep in your own bed tonight.” She said as she grabbed the bags of food and got out of the car, making her way around to the side to help her sister out. She was careful to take her out gently and help her to the door, letting her back inside her own home she hadn’t been in a long time it probably felt like. “Home sweet home.” Kennedy stepped back to let Sophie inside. “Let’s get you settled on the couch and then we can eat.”

Sophie nodded. she knew it was true. Although right now, she wished they had those parents that just hugged them and told them everything was going to be ok. “I can’t wait that is for sure.” She said thinking of the her soft bed with her warm comforter and squishy pillows. When Kennedy came over to help her out she sighed, hating that she had to be reliant on someone else right now, but knowing it was the only way she was going to be there right then. “Thanks Ken.” She told her, her voice softer than usual as she tried to accept the help willingly. She followed her in the door, finding her way to the couch. If she were being honest, just that small walk was exhausting for her. “So, how are you doing? Really doing.” She asked her, wanting to talk about anything but how she was feeling and how much pain she was in or not in.

Sophie was having a tough day. She had struggled more than she wanted to admit her first day at home alone. She had told the nurse to show up that night, to help her get ready for bed, and change her bandages. But she had barely been able to do anything really other than get dressed, which had taken her nearly an hour to do. She had cried no less than three times out of frustration and pain. Ophelia had texted her about coming to visit and while her first instinct was to say no, she didn’t she knew her little sister just needed to know for herself she was ok still. After her fourth nap of the day and another pain killer, she heard the knock on the door. She took a moment to gather herself before she came in. “Of course I still love brownies. My favorite!” She said with a smile as she saw her. She was too tired to try and get up and hug her. She stayed snuggled under her blanket on the couch. “Sorry. I can’t hug.” She said, apologizing for not getting up.

Ophelia shook her head rapidly, gesturing at Sophie to stay exactly where she was. “You have nothing to apologize for, Soph. Just don’t move at all on my account. Please.” The youngest Marshall insisted, unable to hide the anxiety in her eyes. The last thing she wanted was to set back Sophie’s progress in any way shape or form. “Let me cut you up a few brownies, is there anything else you need? Water? Juice? More pillows?” The librarian asked. Ophelia knew she was being overzealous but the brunette couldnt help herself. After not being able to do anything to help while Sophie had been in the hospital she was dying to be of some use to her sister. Quickly she set about sectioning off a few brownie pieces, plating them up before handing them gently to Sophie. She watched her eldest sister closely for a reaction, hoping her efforts had been good enough to bring her just a little bit more joy during this difficult time.

Sophie could see Ophelias emotions on her face. She had never been very good at hiding them and when they were younger, Sophie definitely used that to her advantage. But now, she hated seeing the anxiety on her sisters face. It was the same look her mom and dad had try mask each time they saw her while she was in the hospital. Both of them better at it, but Sophie would catch their eyes or the tone in their voice every now and then and knew what they were feeling. “Phee, please sit down and relax. I’m ok. I’m going to be ok.” She said looking at her concern on her face for her little sister. “Why don’t you sit down and tell me what’s been going on with you? I could use something else to talk about besides how I’m doing.” She said with a smile. “I mean, I love talking about myself, but even I am sick of hearing about me now.” She chuckled slightly.
