Sophie lived in Paris during the Roaring Twenties, where she made a living as a writer for newspapers, magazines and later on novels of her own. She is a part of the fashion subculture called “garçonne” which is the french equivalent of the american flappers.

She has a strange manner of speech, often thinking out loud, or rambling about seemingly uninteresting topics. She talks to animals and inanimate objects as if they were people. When she was alive, people said of her that she was eccentric.

"Oh !" she realizes she hasn't even introduced herself. "I'm Sophie. Nice to meet you."

She shook his hand, a little awkwardly, struggling to figure out where to look. Her mother always said to stare at the eyes but that was terribly unnerving — not to mention most people had two eyes and she never knew precisely which one to look at. Half looking at his face, half looking at the wall behind, she smiled.

"Thank you !"

There was a short silence. Internally panicking, she searched for something — anything — that might keep the conversation going. Pretend you have social skills, Sophie. Ironic for someone who used to organize parties.

" Oh um, how have you been finding the academy so far ?"

(Finally, someone who was a bit like him, even if it was the part which he was most embarrassed of -it was good to see it reflecting on other people, he wasn't alone.)

Ah, quite strange, to say the least. The Deans certainly have a knack for dreadful decorations, no?

(At a poor attempt to diffuse the awkwardness of the situation, Salvatore joked around.) Can't say I ain't respecting it though, it's rare to see people nowadays pick a theme and stick to it! Ha.. how long you been here yourself, if you don't mind me asking?

“And a pronounced disdain for cleaning.” She added, laughing slightly. “I’ve seen more spider webs than decorations in this building so far.”

“I haven’t been here very long — I don’t think. Time has been terribly confusing : days merging into nights, hours seemingly disappearing.. I wake up in the morning thinking it is the evening and then the whole day just goes by.” She laughs, this time with a slight crack in her voice and no joy at all.

“Ah.” She says. “I hope you do not think me mad. I am not. I don’t think so, at least, although some things lately make me doubt.”

She hesitates, looking at him with a slight tremor in her eyes, almost like an animal being hunted and standing still behind a tree. When she speaks it is weary and to be true, filled with anguish.

“Tell me, Salvatore. Have you seen anything.. strange, these past few nights..?”

She stares at him for a second.

Sophie arrived at the carnival, wearing a grey suit and a pearl necklace. The colors and lights were unlike anything she’d seen when she was alive, and she felt a little intimidated.

She looked around. None of the faces in the crowd seemed familiar.

“I wonder if anyone has arrived yet..” she whispered.

*Fionn walks up, looking around as he fiddles with the cuff of his shirt, not paying attention to where he's going. He suddenly bumps into Sophie, stumbling back quickly*

Sorry, I'm sorry- are you alright?

[sophie-nightmare]

She jumps, startled, then smiles a little nervously.

“Y-Yes, I’m alright.“

She mindlessly readjusts the sleeves of her suit, and asks.

“I don’t believe we’ve met before, what’s your name ?”

[fionan-james]

O-oh, I'm glad. *he smiles a little bit, just as nervous* Fionán, my name is Fionán... And you?

[sophie-nightmare]

“I’m Sophie ! Fionán is a lovely name, I must say. Have you been here for long ?”

She looks around, and spots a place selling popcorn and sweets. She hesitates for a second. Is that too childish ? Then she decides to go for it anyways :

“Would you want to go and grab some sweets with me ? They seem to be selling some over there.”

[fionan-james]

Not very long, no... *He shrugs a little, glancing over to the booth selling the sweets and popcorn*

I suppose so. *he grins a little, unsure what exactly to expect, but willing to try anyhow*

[sophie-nightmare]

“Alright, let’s go then.”

They walk towards the sweet shops. There’s a wisp giving out cotton candy and chocolate, as well as bags of popcorn. There’s three different flavors : salt, sugar and caramel. There’s also a list of drinks hanging from the ceiling : hot chocolate, fruit juice and various other soft drinks.

“Hmm” Sophie says. “I think I’ll take salted popcorn and orange juice. What do you want ?”

*he stops, looking at all the options with wide eyes. He's clearly a little overwhelmed by all the options.* Uhhhh....

I suppose I'll try that ? *He points to one of the candy apples*

"Perfect !" Sophie smiles. She asks the wisp for the popcorn, the orange juice and the candy apple then hands it to Fionán.

"Here you go ! Where do you want to go next ?"

[fionan-james]

*Fionán takes a bite of the apple, his eyes widening. He makes a high-pitched, delighted squeaking noise as he tastes it.*

I.. I'm not sure, *He cocks his head to the side in thought* I've never been to a place like this before, I don't know where to begin...

[sophie-nightmare]

Sophie looks around. The vivid colors are overwhelming, a carnival of twirling shapes and lights. The air is thick with the scent of sugar and the sound of laughter.

She feels very small, under the tall ferris wheel. In that moment, the lack of memories really seems to leave a gaping hole in her chest : most people know what rides they like, what food they enjoy. The orange juice and the popcorn are a horrible combo.

She would probably not have picked that when she was alive. But now, with no experience about anything, it’s like she’s a newborn child trying to pretend she knows things. I can’t wait to remember more about who I am, she thinks. About what I like and the things I enjoy.

“We should try one of these !” she says, pointing at the flying chairs.

They seem really high, circling around in the evening sky, but Sophie doesn’t feel scared, just curious. She wants to test her limits : she feels like it’s the only way to know herself again.

It’s easy to be brave when you don’t remember fear.

*Fionn stares at the flying chairs for a moment before nodding* Alright!

*He's never been on anything like that before, and he's a tad nervous, but the only way to find out what it's like is to try it...* They look as though they're flying...

[sophie-nightmare]

They reach a ticket booth, and get two golden tickets with the academy name written on them.

There’s a wisp waiting at the entrance of the ride. He checks their tickets, then the chairs descend from the sky. They walk to two of them, placed side to side, and another wisp adjusts the safety thing (🥂// I have no idea what it’s called I’m sorry 😭)

“Departure in 2 minutes !” a voice yells in the microphone. Sophie grips the side of her chair. Maybe this isnt such a good idea after all.

Attempting to look brave, she turns to Fionán.

“Are… are you ready ?” Her voice is a little shaky.

(//I also have no clue what they're called lol)

*Fionn sits in his chair, anxiously fiddling with his sleeve as he waits for the ride to begin. Two minutes is a long time to wait when you're anxious af, and completely unsure as to what's going to happen next*

I- I think so... *He pauses for a moment, reaching over to pat her hand comfortingly* Are you?

[sophie-nightmare]

Just as Sophie is about to answer, the chairs suddenly lift from the ground. Her fingers are tightly holding the side of her chair as she tries not to look down.

At first, it doesn’t seem too bad, the chairs are spinning slowly. Then they start picking up speed, and going even higher. Sophie clings to the safety thing like it’s a raft saving her from the storm.

This is awful. She tries closing her eyes but it makes it even worse. The chairs are spinning faster and faster. They are now slightly tilted towards the inside of the ride, and it makes her feel as if she’s gonna fall out any moment. Make this stop, she silently begs, as the irrational, instinctive fear kicks in :

I’m going to die.

.

(Tw mention of blood)

A faint memory suddenly flashes in front of her eyes. The feeling of the cold floor against her face, and the warm blood slipping between the tiles.

Then it’s gone, as quickly as it appeared. The chairs are starting to slow down.

Sophie thinks she might faint.

[fionan-james]

*Fionan squeaks a little as the chairs move faster, gripping the bar until his knuckles turn white. It is going. much faster than he expected, and he's not at all sure he likes it. Closing his eyes does work for him, and he keeps them tightly shut until everything is over.*

*Once the ride has come to a full stop, he opens them, glancing over to Sophie and saying in a shaky voice.* You okay?

[sophie-nightmare]

The ride has stopped. It seems like the world has too. Everything is still in front of her eyes, the noise distant, the voices faint. The crowd seems like a mix of faded colors pouring out onto the carnival streets.

Then, she comes back to her senses. At once, everything falls onto her : the noise, the lights, the chaos, her trembling body and her shaking hands still gripping the sides of her chair. She tries to stumble out of it but the safety bar is still attached and she falls back.

She hears fionán's voice. The familiarity of it shakes her out of her panicked state.

"I-I'm okay." she stutters, but her face says otherwise.

The wisp comes back to lift the safety bar and they both get up. Sophie is still shaking as they walk out.

"T-That was not my best idea.." she admits.

Perhaps we should go somewhere quieter?

*He suggests, offering his arm to her when he realizes just how hard she's shaking. He's trembling too, but not to the same extent, and more from sheer adrenaline than fear at this point*

There has to be somewhere around here...

[sophie-nightmare]

She nods in agreement. They walk through the crowd, Sophie is just following him, still shaking. They reach a small alley with a singular lantern hanging from one of the roofs. It looks a bit dirty but quiet enough.

"There." Sophie points at it. They walk in and she lets herself fall on the ground, her back against the cold stone wall. She flinches as something unexpectedly digs into her side : it seems she sat on something.

"What's that ?" she moves to the side, and they see several fireworks rocket scattered on the floor, badly covered in an old cloth. "Oh my god ? Why is that here ?"

She stumbles back, afraid to even touch something that might explode. "W-We probably shouldn't touch them."

[fionan-james]

Probably not... *He steps back quickly once he realizes what exactly they are... he's never seen fireworks before, but between the smell of powder, and the exposed fuses, he can make a pretty solid guess that they're explosive. Fionan is Not Fond of loud noises, and would much rather stay far away from anything like this.*

At least it's quiet in here? *He sits down against the wall, as far away from the explosives as he can possibly get. It isn't far, but at least he's not touching them.*

That's a bonus...

Sophie sighs. She still feels very overwhelmed, by the carnival, the flying chairs, the noise, the lights.. Instinctively, she reaches for her pocket and takes out a pack of cigarettes.

“I hope you don’t mind.” She mindlessly tells Fionan. Her hands are trembling slightly as she lifts the lighter.

Somewhere nearby, a loudspeaker suddenly blasts a song at full volume. Startled, she drops the lighter.

It falls on one of the rockets.

There’s a floating moment where the world is silent then a —

BOOM

She pushes Fionan back and they both fall away from the fireworks, hitting the wall behind.

“RUN !” She yells, panicked, as a second firework launches itself into the sky.

As they rush out of the alley, the sky behind them is a beautiful mess of exploding lights.

“Oh my god.” Sophie whispers once they’re finally out of reach. “What just happened ?”

I don't... *He shakes his head as she pulls out the cigarette, half lost in his own little world as he hums quietly to himself.*

*And then, before he can even tell what's going on, there's an explosion, and Sophie is pulling him back.*

What happened?! *He has to shout to be heard over the fireworks, freezing as she yells at him to run. Fuck. Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck. He finds himself being dragged by the wrist before he can truly process everything happening.*

*They run until they're completely out of breath, coming to rest against a stone wall. Fionán slides down to the ground, panting as he buried his face in his hands* Fuck.

Sophie's first reaction is too attempt to put the blame elsewhere — which isn't fair, or wise, but it's the fear response of someone who has been blaimed for things too many times.

"I didn't.. I didn't.. That wasn't me— i didn't mean to do that.. i swear. I just. I—" she's let herself fall on the ground next to Fionan, burrying her face in her hands.

"Shit." she realisez she hasn't even checked on him, despite being at fault in this whole situation. "Are you okay ? Are you hurt ?"

"Oh my god." she anxiously adds. "This is all my fault isn't it ? I dropped the lighter and we could have gotten hurt. Like seriously hurt— oh god. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

[fionan-james]

*He quickly scoots away from her, voice shaking from both fear and mortification as he answers much too quickly* I'm fine.

*He's not at all upset with her, that's not why he's scooting away. He just. Doesn't want her to see. He has never been so glad in his life that his pants are just dark enough that on first glance, it would be easy enough to miss that they were soaked through from a distance, but there's no hiding it from someone so close to him. Of all the FECKING inconvenient fear responses he could have, it has to be this one.*

It's fine— you, you didn't mean to. Being a wisp sounds agreeable at the moment.

Sophie doesnt try to get any closer — she thinks Fionan doesnt want her near and she understands. It’s all her fault after all. She vows to make up for all that mess. She stands up, and offers a hand to him to help him stand up as well.

« We, um, we should get going. The carnival is soon going to be over. »

Sophie arrived at the carnival, wearing a grey suit and a pearl necklace. The colors and lights were unlike anything she’d seen when she was alive, and she felt a little intimidated.

“Hmm” Sophie says. “I think I’ll take salted popcorn and orange juice. What do you want ?”

She feels very small, under the tall ferris wheel. In that moment, the lack of memories really seems to leave a gaping hole in her chest : most people know what rides they like, what food they enjoy. The orange juice and the popcorn are a horrible combo.

She would probably not have picked that when she was alive. But now, with no experience about anything, it’s like she’s a newborn child trying to pretend she knows things. I can’t wait to remember more about who I am, she thinks. About what I like and the things I enjoy.

“We should try one of these !” she says, pointing at the flying chairs.

“Departure in 2 minutes !” a voice yells in the microphone. Sophie grips the side of her chair. Maybe this isnt such a good idea after all.

Attempting to look brave, she turns to Fionán.

“Are… are you ready ?” Her voice is a little shaky.

At first, it doesn’t seem too bad, the chairs are spinning slowly. Then they start picking up speed, and going even higher. Sophie clings to the safety thing like it’s a raft saving her from the storm.

This is awful. She tries closing her eyes but it makes it even worse. The chairs are spinning faster and faster. They are now slightly tilted towards the inside of the ride, and it makes her feel as if she’s gonna fall out any moment. Make this stop, she silently begs, as the irrational, instinctive fear kicks in :

I’m going to die.

Then, she comes back to her senses. At once, everything falls onto her : the noise, the lights, the chaos, her trembling body and her shaking hands still gripping the sides of her chair. She tries to stumble out of it but the safety bar is still attached and she falls back.

She hears fionán's voice. The familiarity of it shakes her out of her panicked state.

"I-I'm okay." she stutters, but her face says otherwise.

The wisp comes back to lift the safety bar and they both get up. Sophie is still shaking as they walk out.

"T-That was not my best idea.." she admits.

"What's that ?" she moves to the side, and they see several fireworks rocket scattered on the floor, badly covered in an old cloth. "Oh my god ? Why is that here ?"

She stumbles back, afraid to even touch something that might explode. "W-We probably shouldn't touch them."

They walk towards the sweet shops. There’s a wisp giving out cotton candy and chocolate, as well as bags of popcorn. There’s three different flavors : salt, sugar and caramel. There’s also a list of drinks hanging from the ceiling : hot chocolate, fruit juice and various other soft drinks.

“Hmm” Sophie says. “I think I’ll take salted popcorn and orange juice. What do you want ?”

Sophie looks around. The vivid colors are overwhelming, a carnival of twirling shapes and lights. The air is thick with the scent of sugar and the sound of laughter.

She feels very small, under the tall ferris wheel. In that moment, the lack of memories really seems to leave a gaping hole in her chest : most people know what rides they like, what food they enjoy. The orange juice and the popcorn are a horrible combo.

She would probably not have picked that when she was alive. But now, with no experience about anything, it’s like she’s a newborn child trying to pretend she knows things. I can’t wait to remember more about who I am, she thinks. About what I like and the things I enjoy.

“We should try one of these !” she says, pointing at the flying chairs.

They seem really high, circling around in the evening sky, but Sophie doesn’t feel scared, just curious. She wants to test her limits : she feels like it’s the only way to know herself again.

It’s easy to be brave when you don’t remember fear.

There’s a wisp waiting at the entrance of the ride. He checks their tickets, then the chairs descend from the sky. They walk to two of them, placed side to side, and another wisp adjusts the safety thing (🥂// I have no idea what it’s called I’m sorry 😭)

“Departure in 2 minutes !” a voice yells in the microphone. Sophie grips the side of her chair. Maybe this isnt such a good idea after all.

Attempting to look brave, she turns to Fionán.

“Are… are you ready ?” Her voice is a little shaky.

*Fionn sits in his chair, anxiously fiddling with his sleeve as he waits for the ride to begin. Two minutes is a long time to wait when you're anxious af, and completely unsure as to what's going to happen next*

Just as Sophie is about to answer, the chairs suddenly lift from the ground. Her fingers are tightly holding the side of her chair as she tries not to look down.

At first, it doesn’t seem too bad, the chairs are spinning slowly. Then they start picking up speed, and going even higher. Sophie clings to the safety thing like it’s a raft saving her from the storm.

This is awful. She tries closing her eyes but it makes it even worse. The chairs are spinning faster and faster. They are now slightly tilted towards the inside of the ride, and it makes her feel as if she’s gonna fall out any moment. Make this stop, she silently begs, as the irrational, instinctive fear kicks in :

I’m going to die.

A faint memory suddenly flashes in front of her eyes. The feeling of the cold floor against her face, and the warm blood slipping between the tiles.

Then it’s gone, as quickly as it appeared. The chairs are starting to slow down.

*Fionan squeaks a little as the chairs move faster, gripping the bar until his knuckles turn white. It is going. much faster than he expected, and he's not at all sure he likes it. Closing his eyes does work for him, and he keeps them tightly shut until everything is over.*

*Once the ride has come to a full stop, he opens them, glancing over to Sophie and saying in a shaky voice.* You okay?

The ride has stopped. It seems like the world has too. Everything is still in front of her eyes, the noise distant, the voices faint. The crowd seems like a mix of faded colors pouring out onto the carnival streets.

Then, she comes back to her senses. At once, everything falls onto her : the noise, the lights, the chaos, her trembling body and her shaking hands still gripping the sides of her chair. She tries to stumble out of it but the safety bar is still attached and she falls back.

She hears fionán's voice. The familiarity of it shakes her out of her panicked state.

"I-I'm okay." she stutters, but her face says otherwise.

The wisp comes back to lift the safety bar and they both get up. Sophie is still shaking as they walk out.

"T-That was not my best idea.." she admits.
