Originally this was going to be a comically small owl, but it kept looking way too much like Hoothoot, so I changed it to a cactus wren since they're Arizona's state bird anyway. Nothing too deep on this design, just thought the idea of a tiny bird swinging around a huge club was funny!
I just think gharials are really cool animals and the eyes moving up to look like nostrils and the brain resembling its real eyes was a fun thing to draw, just that simple really! The body only being able to phase into the ground with the stony, almost mannequin-like parts just seemed like a very Pokemon thing to include.
A convergent Porygon seemed like a fun challenge, even if keeping the naming scheme was basically impossible. The theme went from the advancement of technology to the advancement of forms of human art!
New Ability: Water Vessel: Powers up the user's Water type attacks, and heals 1/4th its HP when hit by Water type attacks.

By far the youngest lead researcher of any department within Zapotech, she's often been quoted claiming that "the only old bones in this field should be the ones we dig up!" going on to say that "old minds don't produce new discoveries" and given her track record of discovering and reviving brand new species of fossil Pokemon, devoid of the usual Rock type, has certainly lent her heaps of legitimacy in her prideful claims. Usually too busy in the field to even dust herself off when she returns to the lab, her body is usually covered in enough sand and dirt so as to resemble a walking skeleton, something she herself sees the humor in. Not one for Pokemon battles, she mostly utilizes her Pokemon to help her dig up large swathes of land in an instant. Originally from Unova, she's stated multiple times that she'll remain in Sorona until every last bone is dug up.
Some of the newest designs for the region! I very recently learned about the plant called Sandfood native to my home state and got super enamored by it!

Based visually on Pueblo pottery and lore-wise based somewhat on dream catchers, this was another very fun line to design and some of the first designs for the region!

New Ability: Sanctified: This Pokemon's moves can hit Ghost types regardless of type, and when hit by a Ghost type move, the user's corresponding defense stat is raised.
I have a whole line of arachnids coming up but didn't have any tarantula representation, and I think it's fun when two lines of Pokemon aren't related but are connected in lore/ecology

Forretress is another one of my all-time favs and the idea of a shell hiding an inner body worked too perfectly for a geode. For those outside of the American Southwest, amethyst (and turquoise) are Everywhere, mostly in tourist shops. Also had to take a jab at the crystal healing people while I was at it.

Diglett time! I believe these are the first alien themed 'mons for the region, but they're certainly not the last! The idea for a guacamole/avocado Pokemon wouldn't leave my head, and I thought the shape and pit placement would work well for a convergent Diglett!

convergent darumaka time! Switched around their naming conventions of daruma + color and later daruma + animal, with marrom being the Portuguese word for brown! They're based on the desert rain frog and the water holding frog respectively.
New ability: Survival Mode: When the weather is anything but Rain, this Pokemon switches to Survival Mode, changing its typing and swapping its attack and special attack stats.

Convergent Paras/Parasect time! My other favorite Bug type! Trading their mushroom for cacti, these Pokemon are based on the Cochineal bug which is widely harvested in the American Southwest and South America! I remember going to the botanical gardens on a field trip as a kid and the tour guide popping off some spines to show us the bugs. Couldn't drink red juices for years after lol

Our second pseudo-gym-leader (see our first, Tripp, for an explanation on that!) is Ms. Stockwell. A woman old beyond her years after managing multiple large scale operations throughout her life back in Galar, she's developed quite a no-nonsense attitude that she carries with her at all times. As the provisions manager, she oversees the import and storage of food, water, and most day-to-day supplies for both researchers and enlisted trainers. Despite her occasionally cold demeanor, she always has a snack ready for anyone who might need one on hand, as she hates to see anyone going hungry.
