The misuse of “Vegvisir”
I have honestly never been much interested in this symbol, despite my interest of the viking age. Although it has been annoying me a lot of how people and “viking-pop-culture” tend to overuse it. Today I learnt the facts of the symbol’s origins and the “Vegvisir” is in fact not from the Viking age (That’s a surprise). After having read some different researches, it seems like the oldest version of the Vegvisir is presented in the Huld manuscript by Geir Vigfússon in 1860. There are no sources tracing back that vikings used this symbol. Although, you can see that this symbol is heavily inspired by the Keys of Salomon. Especially sigil XXI, which resembles a lot to the Vegvisir symbol. These symbols are in in turn written (as you may notice) based on the Kabbalah (There are more symbols similiar to this that can be found in Salomon’s Keys).
“ Figure 18.--The First Pentacle of Jupiter.--This serveth to invoke the Spirits of Jupiter, and especially those whose Names are written around the Pentacle, among whom Parasiel is the Lord and Master of Treasures, and teacheth how to become possessor of places wherein they are. “
