Deadly Super-Fungus Invades the USA

Cryptococcus gattii is a fungus normally associated with tropics, such as Papa New Guinea and South America and not regions with a temperate climate. However, the deadly super fungus has been discovered in British Columbia, Canada after killing 19 people and infecting 218 in 1999 and in 2006 a new mutated strain was discovered in Oregon, USA after it killed 6 and infected 21. The latest outbreak gives the fatality of this deadly fungus a 25% death rate. Although, unlike viruses, the fungus cannot be spread through person to person contact, the spores can be carried over vast distances on the wind. Unfortunately there is no way of preventing infection from these fungal spores and symptoms can take anywhere from a few weeks to several month after contact to show. If symptoms are caught early enough, anti-fungal medication can be prescribed to treat and kill the fungus. Symptoms include; persistent cough, shortness of breath and fever. Most recent reports indicate that the fungus is traveling south as far as California and may possibly travel further. Report about fungus on National Geographic.

Movie - 20 Years After

I watched this movie last night and I must say, I was throughly disappointed.

It was a watchable film (not the worst I've ever seen) but completely unbelievable and if you want a film to help imagine the world after civilisation has collapsed, this isn't it.

The storyline is fairly basic. The world has been wiped out by nuclear war, famine, natural disaster and plague (all at the same time). Of the few survivors left, they are unable to breed because men have become sterile from the radiation. The film follows a young woman who is heavily pregnant and about to give birth to possibly the first baby in 15 years.

The most jarring part of the film was the slight and unnecessary super-natural element that added nothing to the storyline that couldn't have been done with good, old fashioned flash-backs.

It's all really rather silly and I can't be bothered writing the rest of the storyline as it fails both as entertainment and as a post-apocalyptic survival film.
