First and foremost, me and @connorconsumestrousers have been theorizing that David was [possibly] depressed/in a bad place when he first was sent to Camp Campbell.
The way he explains himself as a uninterested, "bad ass" sorta hints at how he might have actually been.
Exhibit A: The dark years.
He brings up the dark years in Preston Goodplay's Good Play. He says he had been sent to clown school in France before he had been exposed to his love of nature. Which, we can assume is before he went to Camp Campbell.
But, he was around 10 years old when he learned his love of nature, shown in Jasper Dies at the End.
So this would insinuate that he had been sent off when he was young-young. But, why would his parents do that? My personal theory is that his parents were/are a lot like Max's. They were uninterested in their sons hobbies, or needed an excuse to not spend time with him. It is much more complex than this, but this is just a overview/generalization for the sake of my own brain.
My main reason for thinking this is heavily based in how he talks about Max's parents in Parents Day. He talks about them like he knows how they are, and he can empathize with Max, because they shared similar childhood experiences.
Why was David like this, though?
I believe that he was probably pushed into things he showed slight interest in, even if they knew it wouldn't last. I choose to believe they did this to make him see the things he liked were unreasonable/unrealistic. Obviously, this just made him become uninterested in everything, not wanting to like things or they would turn out to be like everything else he showed interest in. Crushed.

Well, I think that I should explain what David means by that. When the idea of drawing came up, the thing was that David has serious health problems (maybe an autoimmune disease?) which is deteriorating. He uses a cane to support himself during moments of weakness. However, I also believe that this is a reference to the episode where he gets lost in the forest. Whatever you like more👍. I just don't know how to put it properly. "I'm dying" simple, but it kinda convey the meaning. He didn't want to tell Max all details. It makes him upset, and he doesn't want to pass the same emotions to a child, who already struggling with his own shit
Full day out in nature. David has been acting strangely since the beginning of camp. Stumbling, often staying behind to catch his breath. Max gets tired of this strange and pathetic sight and decides to finally call him out

Aaaand it takes place somewhere in season 5 (Max can't tolerate changes in people etc etc)
