Curing a Hard Heart

A man complained to the Prophet ‎(ﷺ) that he has a hard heart.

The Prophet ‎(ﷺ) told him: “If you want to soften your heart, then feed the needy and wipe the head of the orphan.”

A person asked his friend: "How long does it take for you to get from your house to your workplace?" He replied: "If there's traffic, about 800 tasbeehs (i.e. saying Subhanallah). And if there's no traffic, about 250 tasbeehs."

Contentment

"Whoever among you wakes up, and his family is safe, and his body is healthy, and he has food for the day, it's as if he acquired the entire Dunya." - Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)

Not everyone was destined for success. If you find yourself being lazy, that's a sign of where you're headed.

Imam ash-Shaafi's Manners

Imam ash-Shaaf'i was well-known for his manners. It was narrated that he once went to a tailor that wanted to test his manners. So the tailor made one of the sleeves on his shirt loose, and one of the sleeves tight. Instead of yelling at the tailor, Imam ash-Shaaf'i said: 'I'll put my books in one sleeve, and my pens in the other.'

Using your time wisely

Ibrahim ibn Adham (d.100 AH) went to visit a person who was sick, and found him crying. When asked why he was crying, he said: "Because of the days that passed and I didn't fast, and the nights that passed and I didn't stand in prayer."

Humbleness

A man came to Shaykh Ahmad ar-Rifa'i once and said: "Who is better, you or this dog?" Shaykh Ahmad replied: "If I cross the Sirat, then I am better." Upon seeing the humbleness of Shaykh Ahmad, the man and his entire family accepted Islam.

Umar ibn al-Khattab asked the Prophet (ﷺ) to make Umrah. When he was given permission, Umar said: "And he (ﷺ) said something that made me happier than to own the entire Dunya. He said: 'Don't forget us in your du'a, my brother'."

Concealing the Faults of Others

A line of poetry attributed to Imam ash-Shaaf'i: 'If you want to live your life safe from harm, with continuous good fortune, and protecting your honor, Then don't use your tongue to mention the faults of anyone, because you're full of faults, and people also have tongues.'

“Judge yourselves before you are judged, and weigh your deeds before they are weighed” - Umar ibn al-Khattab

Contentment

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said to Ibn Umar: "Live in this Dunya as if you're a traveler, or a passerby" This means to not live in this Dunya as if you'll stay in it forever. Don't tell yourself that you'll live for a very long time. You should be detached from the Dunya the way a traveler is detached from other than his hometown. You should only busy yourself in this Dunya as much as the traveler busies himself to get back to his family.

Contentment

Out of extreme hunger, the Prophet (ﷺ) used to tie stones to his stomach. Even though Allah gave him the choice for the valleys of Makkah to be turned into gold for him, he replied: "No Jibril, some days I'm fed, and some days I'm hungry."

Having Good Manners

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "By his good manners, the believer reaches the status of the one who spends his days fasting and his nights standing in prayer." (Abu Dawud) There is a high place in Jannah for those who spend their days fasting, and their nights standing in prayer. Although this takes a lot of effort, the one who does these extra deeds achieves a high status. But the one who has good manners, reaches the level in Jannah of those who performed extra prayers and fasting. Those who spend their nights in prayer and their days fasting will be with those who have good manners.

Having Good Manners

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

“The believers with the most complete Iman, are those with the best manners.”

Having good manners entails having 3 attributes:

1. Being patient when others harm you 2. Being kind to others 3. Refraining from harming others
