College Tips for Future Music Majors
Iāve done a post for just freshmen but music majors donāt get the normal freshman college experience so here goes:
-I donāt care how much you practiced in highschool, youāre gonna do it twice as much now or youāll fall behind
-your advisor is your friend, please talk to them if youāre having any trouble at all
-take care of your mind, mental illness is a huge problem in music majors, I can count on my hand the amount I know WITHOUT anxiety, depression, or both, please get in touch with a school counselor/therapist you may not be as ok as you think you are and itās not defeat to ask for help
-if one person gets sick youāre all getting sick, be prepared, especially if youāre a voice major and lose your voice for a week
-please donāt needlessly miss classes, you have so many and itās so stressful to catch up
-that being said, if youāre sick donāt go, but just not wanting to is not a good enough excuse
-make friends with your professors, theyāre weird and quirky too
-weāre pretentious but donāt let that be the reason you donāt make friends
-do not drink on a weekday and Iām serious. Weekends are your time but youāll most likely have a lot of 8ams to squeeze all your classes in and thatās fun for nobody
-if youāre in a class where others depend on you, I.e. rehearsal, conducting, or a methods class. Do your work so the class isnāt held up because you didnāt do your part.
-that being said, all of your professors are so willing to help if youāre struggling, just ask
-books cost a lot, a lot of professors try to be helpful and use cheaper ones but you still have tons of classes to buy for. Get used ones from older students if you can and sell your old ones to incoming freshmen
-ear training is hard, sometimes you can put all of your effort into it and you still donāt hear, thatās ok, but donāt give up youāll get there
-performance anxiety is common as shit, if you mess up one little thing no ones gonna think youāre horrible or that you donāt deserve to be there, theyāre here to help you grow
-donāt make excuses for why things arenāt getting done, sometimes there are reasons you canāt control, but communicate so that you donāt get punished for it
