4.27.20 were closing in on the last week of Zoom classes. I’m not sure what I’m going to do to structure my time after this. What I can focus on right now is the two essays, lab report and test all coming in the next week. It’s weird to be on zoom because I can’t actually be a music major.

In other news I bought the Pilot juice pens in .5 and I love them, I prefer .7 because of how smooth it writes but these are pretty good. It’s kind of like a mix between G2 and frixon

1.16.20 my spring schedule! School starts on Tuesday so I’m spending my free time in the next few days packing! I’m excited for this new semester with more free time!

7.19.19 I decided to go ahead and make my schedule for next semester! I forgot my new bullet journal doesn’t dry quick for my favorite G2 pilot pens so things got a little smudgy. I’m excited to have more free time next semester!

6.13.19 today I taught the last class of my practicum for Kindermusik and in just a little more time I’ll have my license!! It was a lot of work but I think it’s worth it. I’ve been taking the online class since February on top of my ten college courses and I’ll be honest that’s a lot. But I truly love little kids and believe in early childhood education of any kind. On top of that it’s a great resume building for when I teach.

Dorm Shopping On a Budget

Ayo I’ve seen a lot of things about dorm shopping on a budget up online but that usually just refers to amazon. No.

Actual dorm shopping on a budget(what I did):

Yard saling: Right now is the prime time to do this because of graduating college students trying to get rid of their college stuff (and they want it gone fast) My parents go yard saling every weekend in the summer and this is how they managed to find all of the storage to my dorm room, under $5 each item. I’m talking five drawer organizers and the wide three drawer ones, tote boxes and guess what? Both my microwave AND my mini fridge came from yard sales, both $5. There is absolutely no need to spend $200 on a new fridge when you can get one cheap and clean it out.

Sales: I know walking through target or walmart(or both) is some much fun in July or August for picking out your stuff. Do you know what’s even more fun? Doing it in September and getting everything 70% off. This one may be more for juniors thinking ahead but it can also apply to incoming college freshman who are willing to wait on a few things.

I ended up getting a queen sized quilt for my dorm at like 90% off in September the year before I graduated highschool and I’m so thankful. I also got my sheets, towels, shower organizer and more.

Wait til you move in: This one ties in to the waiting for September for sales, but this way if you get to your dorm and figure out either your roommate bought whatever it was you needed, OR you can decide you don’t need something you thought you did and you didn’t spend the money on it already!

T.j.maxx: I know this isn’t as much of a budget shopping but it does help. They always have super nice quality stuff for like target prices(or less) I appreciate it so much. I did this for drawer organizers, throw blankets, and everything else I didn’t find during a September sale or that didn’t need to be bought until the week before( like food or cleaning supplies).

I’d also like to note that amazon is still an option and is a great place for lots of dorm stuff, but it’s not the only option and not always the cheapest.

Today I was planning for next semester and my class load looks a lot lighter. At least the amount of time I’ll spend in class is less, which is good because I currently spend 33hrs a week in class. I’m excited that my minor now seems doable. I finished my first phase of Kindermusik training and was feeling very productive but today I had a tension headache lasting for over 12 hours. I ended up missing a recital I was supposed to page turn at. All is well now though. Happy April, Everyone

how to create a new blog

I looked around at what other people with a similar type of blog were doing and kind of made it my own thing? There’s a lot of trial and error, it took me a little while to figure out people like two pictures versus one and I like making the contrast between my notes and something else likes plants or one of my cats.

Honestly, do what you think looks nice, post your own content and tag a lot you’ll do great:)

College Tips for Future Music Majors

I’ve done a post for just freshmen but music majors don’t get the normal freshman college experience so here goes:

-I don’t care how much you practiced in highschool, you’re gonna do it twice as much now or you’ll fall behind

-your advisor is your friend, please talk to them if you’re having any trouble at all

-take care of your mind, mental illness is a huge problem in music majors, I can count on my hand the amount I know WITHOUT anxiety, depression, or both, please get in touch with a school counselor/therapist you may not be as ok as you think you are and it’s not defeat to ask for help

-if one person gets sick you’re all getting sick, be prepared, especially if you’re a voice major and lose your voice for a week

-please don’t needlessly miss classes, you have so many and it’s so stressful to catch up

-that being said, if you’re sick don’t go, but just not wanting to is not a good enough excuse

-make friends with your professors, they’re weird and quirky too

-we’re pretentious but don’t let that be the reason you don’t make friends

-do not drink on a weekday and I’m serious. Weekends are your time but you’ll most likely have a lot of 8ams to squeeze all your classes in and that’s fun for nobody

-if you’re in a class where others depend on you, I.e. rehearsal, conducting, or a methods class. Do your work so the class isn’t held up because you didn’t do your part.

-that being said, all of your professors are so willing to help if you’re struggling, just ask

-books cost a lot, a lot of professors try to be helpful and use cheaper ones but you still have tons of classes to buy for. Get used ones from older students if you can and sell your old ones to incoming freshmen

-ear training is hard, sometimes you can put all of your effort into it and you still don’t hear, that’s ok, but don’t give up you’ll get there

-performance anxiety is common as shit, if you mess up one little thing no ones gonna think you’re horrible or that you don’t deserve to be there, they’re here to help you grow

-don’t make excuses for why things aren’t getting done, sometimes there are reasons you can’t control, but communicate so that you don’t get punished for it

3.5.19 Fingers crossed I pass my conducting exam tomorrow....and my trombone playing test....and my piano midterm. Conducting can be very hard and daunting but I think it might be my calling. I’ve been observing at a middle school recently and I’ve definitely picked the right major.

Also, conductings fun because I have a magic wand like Harry Potter and everyone listens to me.

11.13.18 I’m trying to figure out my schedule for next semester, luckily, my department lays out all I need to take to graduate on time. That means that next semester I’ll be taking 11 classes.

6 Things People Don't Always Tell You About Studying

1. you ace tests by overlearning. you should know your notes/flashcards/definitions basically by heart. if someone asks you about a topic when you’re away from class or your notes and you can answer them in a thorough and and accurate answer, then you’re good, you know the material. 

2. if you don’t understand something, it will end up on the test. so just don’t disregard and hope that this specific topic won’t be on the test. give it more attention, help, and practice. find a packet of problems on that one concept and don’t stop until you finish it and know it the best. 

3. sometimes you just need that Parental Push. you know in elementary school, they would tell you “ok now it’s time for you to do your homework! you have a project coming up, start looking for a topic now!” ONE of your teachers might be like this. be thankful for it and follow their advice! these teachers are the best at always keeping you on track with their calendar. if not a teacher, then have one of your friends be that person that can keep you accountable for the things you promised you would do. 

4. you just need to kick your own ass. seriously. i know it sucks and its hard to study for two things at once. BUT. I DONT CARE IF IT’S HARD. you need to do it and at least do it to get it over with because you can’t keep putting things off. If you do, you will eventually run out of time and you will hate yourself. force yourself to do it. i made myself sign up for june ACT even though there’s finals because if i didn’t, i probably never would. like do i think i’m gonna be ready in one month? probably not, SO I BETTER GET ON IT AND START STUDYING! 

5. do homework even if it doesn’t count. if you actually try on it, then you will actually do so much better on the tests, it’s like magic. 

6. literally just get so angry about procrastinating that you make yourself start that assignment. I know how hard it is to kick the procrastination habit. I have to procrastinate. So I make myself start by thinking about my deadlines way early. I think, “oh i have a presentation in three weeks (but it really takes 2 weeks to do), i’ll be good and start today.” when that doesn’t happen, you say you’ll do it tomorrow, and this happens for like the next four days. I get so mad at myself for not starting when i am given a new chance to do so with every passing day. By that time, you actually have exactly how much time you need for it AND you were able to procrastinate the same way you usually do ;)
