A few years ago Anna Bullbrook, (Airborne Toxic Event and The Bulls) volunteered at the Los Angeles Girls Rock Camp and had a “ mind-bending experience of seeing women use rock’n’roll to encourage young girls to take risks, grow, and be more themselves in a really utopic, positive, and very thoughtful all-female environment. The experience changed my brain. The relief of connecting to a community of positive and pro-active musical women hit me like a wave”. Once Anna got a taste of what she calls “Utopia” she knew she had to do something to keep that feeling of community alive and continue to grow it, and so she started GIRLSCHOOL

GIRLSCHOOL is a music festival that celebrates women-identified-fronted bands and women artists

SoundGirls #WomanCrushWednesday is Whitney Olpin. Whitney has been working in Live Sound as an Independent monitor engineer and stage manager. She has spent the last year touring with Fitz and the Tantrums. "My advice for women is the same as it would be for men. Be prepared to work hard and from the bottom up. Get a job at a local venue or studio and be persistent about wanting to move up the ladder. Learn everything you can from everyone you can."

We kick off 2018 with our first feature profile on Lenise Bent - Producer/engineer Lenise is one of the first women recording engineers and has worked on many iconic records including “Aja” by Steely Dan, “Breakfast in America” by Supertramp and “Tusk” by Fleetwood Mac. She was also the first woman to receive a platinum album for engineering on Blondie’s AutoAmerican.

SoundGirls #WomanCrushWednesday is Fernanda Lemos. She is the only woman working as a sound engineer for Loudness, the second largest sound company in Brazil. Loudness was founded in 1976 and has become the premier production company in Brazil, providing sound for international touring artists such as Rush and Bon Jovi, Broadway productions and events.

If you walk into a venue with a chip on your shoulder then, of course, you’re not going to have a good day because that’s the type of energy you’re giving off. Just because someone has an issue with the fact that I am a female FOH mixer doesn’t mean I have to take on their issues. I am there to make sure concert attendees enjoy a great show, and that’s the main goal. You HAVE to keep a good attitude and, as my mom says, keep the main thing the main thing."
