Starting with the basics
Shifting Gears
Iām going to be focusing more on my writing for the foreseeable future. Iāve gotten such good feedback from my first short story and I can see it already opening the door to future opportunities. In order to have sustained success I need to further educate myself about the ins and outs of the industry. Fortune favors the prepared. Iāll still be posting my other content from time to time as well but the focus is definitely going to be on this new journey as I move forward.
This story is my most ambitious project yet. By a long shot. It's exciting and daunting at the same time.

So I was editing my story and got stuck on a weird sentence for like five minutes. Thinking out loud, I asked bae what she thought about a couple different versions to make it flow better. She goes,Ā āWhy donāt you just do this?ā Donāt tell her I said this but I was like, āOk first of all how dare you come up with a better solution in an instant you slice of chocolate pound cake?ā This is why I love her.Ā

Presenting my first story to an editor this Wednesday! Iām trying to keep the hype lowkey
"Countdown"
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to watch your world end?
Stop, Act 3
The glass window warms my cheek.
After a long, tedious day at the office, sometimes thereās nothing I look forward to more than taking a moment to relax on the bus ride home. The sunās golden rays filter through the window as I watch the city blocks slowly pass by. The bus is loud and boisterous as usual, overlapping conversations, people yelling into each others faces just to be heard over the honking horns of traffic, and someone blasting music in the back. I donāt even need to turn and look to see it all. Iāve long since learned to tune the noise out. Absentmindedly, I lift my cheek from the glass as we hit the pothole between Creighton Ave and Loyola St., the Crater of Terror the city fiendishly refuses to address.
āYou know, they should really fix that thing. Itās going to cause an accident someday.ā A voice speculates next to me. Itās a voice I donāt think iāve heard before; a wrinkle in the routine. Iām not much for idle conversation so I just close my eyes and pretend not to have heard the comment.
āJust like how they really need to send you the help you deserve. Can you believe their nerve? Still sending you interns after all these yearsā¦?ā The voice continues.
Oh heās good, but iām still not taking the bait. I try to focus on the music coming from the back. It must be those three kids who always get off at the spot near the outdoor fitness center. Their music is always high octane, nonsense lyrics over 180 bpm.
ā...If it were me, I wouldāve gone with a more vintage Greek revival style for the facade as opposed to the Victorian inspirationā¦ā

Stop, Act 2
The night seems eternal.
With no way to keep track of time, itās impossible to place how long Iāve been standing here but judging from the growing ache in the heels of my feet, quite some time. Maybe this hoary stop has been long abandoned and Iām just wasting my time here, but thereās just something about that sign. I take another long look at it. Itās too...perfect. Thereās not a speck of peeling paint or dirt or grime or anything to indicate that it wasnāt erected mere moments before I arrived. Its condition casts stark contrast to the rest of the decrepit stop. As if there was a twenty-four hour team of specialists keeping it in mint-condition without a care for anything else. Itās strange purity was mystifying. However, eighth wonder of the world or not, I need to get home. I turn and try to pick the general direction I came from.
āI should be fine if I just stick to the sidewalkā I think to myself as I start heading back. I reach the edge of the circle of light. āHere we go.ā I breathe as I brace for the darkness.
āHuh, well, this looks like my best bet to finally getting out of here.ā
I look back at the rather uninviting bench. āI wonder what stories you have to tell...ā
Honestly I wouldnāt mind if the bench did start talking to me. Traveling in complete silence so long has made me feel surprisingly isolated. I canāt remember the last time everything Ā seemed so still. Maybe itās just the paranoia making me unusually observant tonight. As I start pacing back and forth along the stopās hazardous sidewalk, placing my steps with care, I look out into the opposite side of the circle of light and I could swear more sidewalk was visible a few minutes ago. I begin to turn to look back at the sign in puzzlement when Iām suddenly plunged back into total darkness.
The sign went out.
Stop, Act 1
This is the last time.
It never fails that each and every time they send me one of these wide-eyed interns to help work on the mock-up architectural model, it gets ruined and I lose another year of my life from the stress of starting from scratch with a deadline just hours away. The offense this time? The genius klutzed Ā his way into the edge of the model and promptly spilled my chai latte all over the base. Completely ruined. If HR wasnāt so damn preoccupied with scraping the bottom of the low-wage barrel and actually gave me an assistant with the experience and qualifications Iāve asked for time and time again, I wouldnāt be the last one here on a Friday night at god knows what hour in the morning. Mark my words, after presenting this project to the investors on Monday, I am taking a well deserved extended vacation and they'll be lucky if I ever come back. But thankfully, itās good as new. You would never guess that an idiot nearly cost me a two million dollar investment by somehow missing the course on learning how to walk in a straight line.
The office is always kinda eerie this late at night. Silent, dim. Even the cleaning crew has left, the whirring sound of their push cleaners on the carpet long gone. I take one last look at the model sitting on the long table ready to be boxed up and shipped to the build site. The hard part is finally past me, for now, I can just go home and-
āOh shoot.ā
I look at my watch. 1:07 a.m. I check my phone. ā5 Missed Callsā...I let out a long and resigned sigh. Ariel is going to kill me.
"Stop" Teaser
I've been working on this project for a couple months and after hours and hours of work I'm happy to say it's finally done. Here's a sneak peek at my first short horror story, "Stop."
"The night air is warm even though itās the middle of January. Coming from the perpetually frigid northeast, I could definitely get used to these mild āwinters.ā The Downtown Quarter is calm and quiet as I walk along the sidewalk towards my stop. Strangely, not even the ambient background sounds of the city are there; not the stray cats who are always seemingly fighting to the death just out of sight, not the wind whistling between buildings or even the constant stream of non-offensive pop music streaming from the outdoor storefront speakers. Itās been so long since Iāve been in this part of the city at night that I begin to feel an irrational fear creep up in the back of my mind. I canāt help but look over my shoulder every few steps to make sure no one is following me. For the fifth time, I check my phone to make sure the bus is still running. Iāve rode this same bus for as long as I can remember, but never this late. Ever since I moved into the city, fresh-faced, full of hope and a with crisp new degree framed on the wall, itās been my first and only choice for transportation. It just made sense to me; if iām going to be stuck in traffic the same as everyone else in a car, why pay hundreds of dollars a month on a car note, insurance and gas? Actually, now that I think about it, thatās missing too; the traffic. The people. No honking cars, no ornery cyclists, no street performers...not even the homeless. The streets are completely vacant.
The ninth time checking my phone as I near the corner that leads to my stop, it says that the bus is running right on schedule and only a few blocks away. I check my surroundings once again, almost hoping to see some sign of life...but not too big a sign. Iād settle for a piece of trash floating by, pushed along by the wind. When did the city get this clean? I really look at the ground for the first time and itās perfectly spotless. No signs that there were ever any people here. Thereās no oil or tire marks on the asphalt, no gum between the cracks on the sidewalk. A pit of uneasiness begins to form in my stomach as I turn the corner and pick up my pace.
But when I turn the corner, what I see stops me dead in my tracks. The stop is...gone."
