A nice #SXSelfie to close out the final day. It’s the Closing Speaker and SXSW Founder Bruce Sterling.
After schooling us with his incredibly intelligent yet mental thoughts, I schooled him on the selfie trout pout.
It’s great that I can blog on Tumblr. But if I can’t code, I can’t create. That’s what Marlo and Marlen here, taught me.
So these two people are transforming the lives of women through technology. They are re-careering them into front-end developer roles in a 13-week course, that even pays the students a salary while they learn.
A pretty inspiring crowd funded project. Check it out: Sisters Code.
Now I *have* to learn how to code.
A Chelsea Clinton #SXSelfie. OBVIOUSLY. The first thing I learnt was that her dad has only ever sent 2 emails. Weird. But the crux of her talk was about how the internet has given us all the power to make a difference. What will you do with your power and platforms? She talked about data as hard facts and figures that can make people wake up to what's happening in developing countries. But it's nothing unless it's out there. We need transparency. We need a 'solution hub', where every project is transparent. If we all share our research and results, we'll know the best way of working to help people in developed countries. So who at SXSW is going to build one?
The moment Gareth ate a cookie made of crickets. #FoodOfTheFuture
Unsurprisingly, there's a few people strolling around SXSW wearing Google Glass. Like Xana here. She loves her Google Glass. But what does she do with it? "I mainly use it to take photos and to search for info without looking at my phone. It also has a turn-by-turn direction service, which is handy." Indeed. And what's the most amazing thing you've seen at SXSW? "The Impossible Project. It turns photos from your iPhone into a printed Polaroid straight away. I want one!"
Laughing at YouTube comments with comedian Adam Buxton. As you do.
Elijah Wood in the house
Brace yourselves. It's a #SXSelfie with Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web. #BestSelfieEver #BetterThanEllen #WOW
Robert Scoble and Gary Shapiro held a discussion on the biggest Tech Trends of 2014. Almost impossible to catch it all, but here are a few interesting bits. Google Glass. It's the future, for sure. But it's so unfinished at this point, that it's frustrating to use. It's also the most controversial product in our lifetime. These things are studying us. They will know when we are drunk, what we say and even what we think. Who will Google share this data with? Which leads us to privacy - probably the hottest topic of SXSW 2014. Scoble said he is happy to give up his privacy for utility. For example, he allows the TripIt app to scour his Gmail account for his personal flight and travel information, so to update him on any changes. Handy. Yet 10 years ago it would've been unthinkable for him to allow a third party access to his emails. Shapiro agreed that you've got to give something up, to get something in return. And our privacy standards change overtime. Shapiro also made the claim that paint and wallpaper industries will one day go out of business, because in the future, our walls will be made of television screens. And that we are running a clear path to driverless cars. They will happen. But there are huge issues along the way. Both ethical and technical. But seeing as car accidents are the number one killer in the States, he sees driverless cars as the solution. Interesting stuff. I guess we'll wait and see. This selfie represents the way I feel about the wallpaper thing.
Dave and Matt did an incredible 90 days of creating a new idea every day. And making it. Check out what happened: http://90daysofmaking.com
Just a #SXSelfie with Randi Zuckerberg. No biggie.
Here’s something else she touched on with Dana Brunetti. In this age of social media, live content is having a resurgence. Theatre is the last realm of entertainment, where you have to physically be there to see it. Even music concerts are streamed. So theatre is the next thing set to become more accessible online.
Ok, so not a selfie, but still cool. This is Dana Brunetti, producer of House of Cards. He's talking to Randi Zuckerberg, who used to work with her brother at Facebook, now she's the founder and CEO of Zuckerberg Media. According to Zuckerberg, Brunetti is completely changing the face of content. They got together to discuss how Hollywood and Silicon Valley are continuing to converge in 'Are We All Producers Now?' So, are we? Well yeah, everyone has the ability to make a film on their smartphone, edit it and put it on the internet. If you have talent, it's a fantastic time to create content. You don't need a celebrity to make a great movie, you just have to tell a good story. Then be smart using social media to get it out there. Five years from now, is television dead? It's dead the way we know it. Digital distribution is where it's at. Networks you've never thought of will start creating content. Not just Netflix, but Facebook and Twitter could start creating and distributing too.
It's a #SubwaySelfie. I love that Subway are having a dig at the over-the-top branded technologies at SXSW. Eatovations is a collection of outlandish inventions that enhance the eating experience. Amongst the chaos of brands and marketers shouting for my time in Austin, their tongue-in-cheek approach gets my vote.
Meet Melody, who works at the Oreo #eatthetweet stand. Apparently Oreo has designers who translate trending Twitter topics into flavours, which are then 3D-printed to make Oreo cookies. Yeah, me neither. But they sure taste good.
Look! It's a #SXSelfie with Silicon Valley legend Ben Horowitz. Kinda.
Laurel Braitman did a great talk, 'Animal Madness', about how animals have individual personalities. And just like us, they too can be prone to mental illness. For example, a Labrador can have separation anxiety and jump out of a 4-storey building. A monkey can have OCD. 60 whales once committed suicide by throwing themselves against jagged rocks. And a guy studied an orca pod for 20 years and believes one was autistic. The US market for pet pharmaceuticals will be worth 9.2 billion dollars in 2015. Sadly, anti-depressants for animals is a gigantic business. Poor little things. But Laurel spoke about how anxious dogs, compulsive parrots and elephants in recovery can help us understand ourselves.
