Does anyone else kinda miss the whole Russian diva narrative of the 2012 quad?
Thay are definitely lacking some “I’m pretty, I’m cool! I dominate this school!” attitude
the “I swear I’m not a whore” moment with Nabs talking deserves an Academy Award
Grebby be like: how many potato for you to join Russia?

So yesterday I’ve been to Krugloe
And boy it was an experience.
We were supposed to do interviews for a Russian media I am interning for and probably take a few pics… But apparently, neither ARod nor Grebs minded so they just let us see the whole practice.
Grebs is super chill (so are most of the coaches tbh) so when I introduced myself as Sasha he said “Zhenya” and shook my hand with a smile. There was a total of 12 girls warming up + Paseka who was already practicing vault and Eremina who came later.
For all those concerned for Iliankova: she was there with her back apparently hurting. She mainly practiced beam (semi-successfully) and I’ve only seen her practice Tweedle on the low bar.
Alexeeva had her knee heavily taped but looked decent overall (and spent most of the morning practice conditioning).
I had a very funny interaction with Akhaimova. She was taping her leg when I stood nearby and at some point, I’ve realized she was staring at me. I was like “Hey, Lilya! Love your FX” to which she replied with “Thanks” with this face like “Yeah whatever I’m wildly aware”. Later she came to me and asked if we were going to interview her. When I told her that we weren’t, she audibly said “Thank god” and immediately left. Love her.
Simakova was mainly doing vault and her Rudi looked amazing. Like, even better than it did before.
We did the first interview with Melka. She is actually really nice but is a huge introvert (more than I imagined she would be). My photographer said she is very smiley and soft when it comes to posing for pictures, but I got an impression it was “pls take this pic asap and leave me alone” kind of smile. I obviously can’t share most of the staff she said in an interview (yet), but a sneak-peek: she totally loves her full twisting DLO, Maroon 5, drawing and not being disturbed by anyone including her coaches during practices.
The second interview was with Vika (and now when she isn’t going to Euros we’re kind of stuck with what to do with the material lmao). She is way more talkative than you’d imagine. She shared a lot about how verification went for her - she fell on bars but nailed two of her beam routines there (#Vikathings). She really got a very new positive attitude and talked about all the struggle and her comeback with a smile (I really hope Euros disappointment doesn’t ruin that). She said that one of her biggest dreams would be getting her Amanar back and performing it at the big comp to get a redemption after London. We had to take a little break to take pictures and she talked to me as if she knew me. She was like, “Oh, have you heard about Denis Ten?” and then we chatted about how horrible that was.
My new favorite person of NT staff must be Ulyankina. We weren’t even planning to interview her but she straight-up approached me and was like “Let’s go, I’ve got time for you”. In between Paseka came to her to ask to leave early and Ulyankina made a few jokes and was super chill. She said coaching staff watches all the international comps because “We are old grandmas and don’t have anything else to do with our lives anyway”.
What really positively struck me was an atmosphere in the gym. Girls seem to be comfortable in terms of interactions with coaches and their training. ARod(!) was pretty friendly and encouraged us to talk to as many people as possible. And at the end, Grebs said that they were really excited to have us and would love us to come again.
I think I have a new-found love for this team.
This is so interesting!! I would have expected the personalities of Gelya and Vika to be the other way around actually 😅 and i already like Gelya’s general attitude towards trying things etc. Vika I’m more on the fence but i do agree she is mentally much better than years back. Also same Ulyankina, same.
I’m so glad you had an oppurtunity to see a side of things not many people get to see 😊😊
That was amazing!!! Tbh if I didn’t have pics I would’ve totally thought I dreamt about it. It was just so surreal to come into the gym and literally run into Gelya.
Also, I almost forgot to mention: Afan was there!!!

Sweet! Oleg has started his comeback today, Aliya commented. His reply? Tokyo 2020 together remember? Her reply? Of course I remember.

Adam Rippon, the 2016 U.S. men’s figure skating champion who is believed to be the first openly gay U.S. Winter Olympian, criticized the White House’s selection of Vice President Mike Pence to lead the 2018 U.S. Olympic delegation to South Korea in a phone interview with USA TODAY Sports Tuesday night. “You mean Mike Pence, the same Mike Pence that funded gay conversion therapy?” Rippon said. “I’m not buying it.” Rippon, 28, who was selected to his first Olympic team earlier this month after finishing fourth at the U.S. national championships, said that he would prefer not to meet Pence during the traditional meet-and-greet between the official delegation and U.S. athletes in the hours leading to the opening ceremony. It’s possible Rippon would have to miss that event anyway to be part of the team figure skating competition. “If it were before my event, I would absolutely not go out of my way to meet somebody who I felt has gone out of their way to not only show that they aren’t a friend of a gay person but that they think that they’re sick,” Rippon said. “I wouldn’t go out of my way to meet somebody like that. “I don’t think he has a real concept of reality,” Rippon said of Pence. “To stand by some of the things that Donald Trump has said and for Mike Pence to say he’s a devout Christian man is completely contradictory. If he’s okay with what’s being said about people and Americans and foreigners and about different countries that are being called ‘shitholes,’ I think he should really go to church.“ Rippon did say that if given a chance to meet Pence after competing (unlikely considering the relatively short length of any delegation’s visit to the Games), he would consider it. “If I had the chance to meet him afterwards, after I’m finished competing, there might be a possibility to have an open conversation,” Rippon said. “He seems more mild-mannered than Donald Trump. … But I don’t think the current administration represents the values that I was taught growing up. Mike Pence doesn’t stand for anything that I really believe in.”

Thoughts on Gabby
There’s so much sub-posting going on and I’ve received a few anons so I figured I would just try to briefly articulate how I feel in a post.
First of all, there’s nothing wrong with disliking a gymnast because of their beliefs. Some people feel this need to separate a gymnast’s personality from their gymnastics - meaning you can be a fan of one but not the other - but I don’t. If for whatever reason you don’t like a gymnast then go ahead and don’t root for them.
Second of all, this situation is different than sifting through years of twitter likes trying to find something problematic. I do agree that on occasion the gymternet engages in a bit of a witch hunt against certain gymnasts, though I generally think it’s harmless - gymnasts don’t have to make their profiles public, and they should understand that their public profiles are a reflection of who they are and they will be judged accordingly. If you don’t want people online to jump to conclusions and think you’re, for instance, homophobic, then don’t like a homophobic tweet with your profile on public. It’s really simple.
That being said, this situation is different. Gabby publicly went out of her way to respond directly to a teammate who she knows was a victim of sexual abuse. She made her opinion on the matter extremely clear even if she made a half-assed attempt to backtrack later. She insinuated that Aly invited the abuse she endured by the way she acted - i.e. not modestly enough - which is incredibly rude, heartbreaking even.
Third of all, I don’t care how Gabby was raised. She’ll be 22 next month and she’s traveled the world, met people from all different backgrounds with different beliefs and experiences, and she should have learned somewhere along the way that blaming victims for their abuse is wrong. I do not give a fuck if her Mom is influencing her beliefs at this point - it’s Gabby’s responsibility to grow and reject those heinous beliefs for herself, and if she doesn’t, I do not care why. It’s wrong, end of story. To blame this way of thinking on her religion serves no purpose - why she thinks this way is a moot point. It doesn’t matter. And I’m willing to bet there are plenty of religious people who don’t share her point of view.
It’s obvious people are using hyperbole when they say stuff like “so glad Vika won the 2012 AA”. If you’re really worked up about people supposedly erasing Gabby’s accomplishments, you need to learn how to read at an adult level and understand that exaggerated language that isn’t meant to be taken literally. Gabby will always be the 2012 AA champion and the first African American AA champion - an accomplishment that has inspired a generation of young girls (to whom she is now spreading her antiquated and sexist beliefs).
In conclusion, Gabby is exactly the type of person that will inhibit positive change at USAG. Her mindset is precisely what enables this type of behavior to go on unabated. I’ll never root for her again and I don’t feel even a tinge of sympathy for her. If you want to give her a second chance and hope she’ll learn from this that’s fine, but I think all she’ll learn is how to keep her mouth shut rather than changing her actual beliefs.
