Peruvian Cultural Mix

This project is about what does being a Peruvian means, or how it makes you feel. “Soy Peruano” made me thought about what does being a Peruvian really signifies, and if we are actually 100% Peruvians, because for me, being a Peruvian is being someone different, we don’t actually need to be from Peru, we can be from any part the world but still feeling that Peru is our home, and you can call yourself a Peruvian. For centuries, the man explored the world, discovered a lot of things, and learned from other cultures, had family, etc., in a different place where he was born. This is how we were created, based in a lot of cultures, also known as racial miscegenation. Racial miscegenation is the mixing of different racial groups through marriage, cohabitation, sexual relations or procreation. In Peru, almost the 80% are from a racial miscegenation, and it all began with the conquest of Peru between 1530 and 1550. For my project, I investigated about some photographers, so I could decide which style of photography was the best for my topic, and could show better my point of view. In this case, my principal photographer was Mario Testino. He is a renowned photographer that was born in Lima in October 30th in 1954. Nowadays, his principal work is oriented to fashion. He has worked for magazines like: Vogue and Vanity Fair, having as models different kinds of celebrities like Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Cristiano Ronaldo, Emma Watson, etc. I related my work with his, because he usually takes a lot of photos of portraits, and that was the principal idea for my subject: capture the faces of people that belong to the miscegenation, but not only international, also national, between cities. Testino captures that, all the expressions, the sensations, and the essence of the person. In other side, I also took reference of photographers like: Renike Djistra, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, and Richard Avedon. All of these photographers usually take photos of portraits; I took inspiration of them in the techniques they used, the kind of lightning, and the angles. In conclusion, I feel like our culture, right now, is richer, because we have a lot of immigrants that contributed in it. We have more traditions, more kinds of food, etc., everything got combined, and mix, that is why I named my project as "Peruvian Cultural Mix", because right now that is what we are, and we should feel proud about it, because we are unique.

Maria Fernanda - Lima, Perú. Although, her family has Chinese ancestry, they don’t follow the Chinese tradition. Mostly, the people that migrated from other country do the same.

Maria Fernanda - Lima, Perú. Her father is from Lima, and in the other side, her mother is from Cañete. Cañete is located in Lima, and it is know because it is the capital of Peru.
