DEADLIEST CATCH - Behind the Scenes

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

In this tribute to Eadweard Muybridge director and cinematographer, GREGORY J. WILSON pushed the limits of technology to capture these stunning images of cheetahs running in ultra-slow-motion. A challenge that married the pinnacle of 130 years in motion imaging technology with the sheer speed of 2 million years of evolution. This was the highlight of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC's November 2012 issue. With TRAVIS TIPS as his key grip, a 410ft track was built to slingshot a camera sled (armed with a Phantom Flex camera) at speeds topping 75mph. DOGGICAM provided the means to project the camera system at speeds that impressed even the cheetahs. 1st AC EDWARD RICHARDSON had his work cut out for him pulling focus on these speeding creatures.

EMMYS 2011

The DEADLIEST CATCH team swept the 2011 Emmys, taking Best Reality Series, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. Deadliest Catch producer/cinematographer and Space Division founder TRAVIS TIPS took home this Emmy for cinematography.

SOMEWHERE ELSE

This project started as an opportunity from Abel Cine to christen the brand-new Phantom Flex high-speed digital camera. The camera system hadn't rolled a single frame of video outside of a lab prior to us taking it onto set. The camera is capable of shooting 1500 frames per second at 2.5k resolution. This is only as impressive as the stunning footage the camera is capable of producing. Greg Wilson took home the 2011 ICG Emerging Cinematographer Award for this WWII-inspired short.
