CADY
“janis, right. sorry, i won’t forget now.”
she’s suddenly tossing the bag their tent is stored in over her shoulder. why did being with this girl she barely knew suddenly seem like it was going to be like camping with regina. at least she wasn’t complaining about the weather or bugs or something… yet.
“follow me.”
cady’s already started walking to a flat area, slightly away from the rest of the group but not so much so that they’d be in trouble for separating from the pack or anything. she doesn’t say another word. doesn’t even bother to ask for janis’s help. she didn’t seem to into it and cady could manage so, why bother. and in what seems like no time at all she had their tent set up, a quick glance back at the other students who were still struggling.
“shall we?” and with that she tossed her duffle bag and sleeping bag into their tent.
janis shuffled after her with one last glance back in the direction of the rest of the group. it seemed as though cady knew what she was doing, and since she didn’t have anything helpful to contribute...
‘ you got it, boss. ’
she gave a half-hearted mock-salute to punctuate her point before planting her doccies firmly in the mud and watching as cady set about putting up the tent. though it pained her to admit it, she was extremely impressed by what she saw. their home away from home was up and ready in two minutes flat. as far as she could see, nobody else had even figured out where to start.
‘ holy SHIT. ’
janis exhaled her breath in a low whistle, ducking her head to peer inside and glancing back up to at cady with an incredulous smile. upon righting herself, she gave her a slow but remarkably non-sarcastic clap of appreciation.
‘ okay, that? that was pretty cool. ’
REGINA
she could’t help the chuckle that escaped her lips, watching janis shove everything into her backpack. that was so like her.
“cool.”
“i rode my bike here, so i was thinking we could take a more scenic route back to my house? unless you’re too tired and i can call my mom to pick us up.” she always offered, but she’d rather not have too. “we always find something to do, but i’ve been meaning to try that new dance star game my mom got for our wii!”
once she was sure her friend was ready, she headed into the hall and towards their lockers. typically alphabetical sucked for them, considering G and S weren’t close in the alphabet my any means. but it worked out because janis’s locker ended up underneath reginas.
“i just need to get rid of this history book and grab my lunch box.”
‘ scenic is good. ’
janis shrugged, pulling the zip the rest of the way across and slinging her bag over her shoulder. the more time spent with regina the better, as far as she was concerned, and as nice as mrs george was... she was kind of cringy sometimes.
not that she’d EVER say something like that to regina, obviously.
when her friend flounced out into the hallway she followed diligently behind her, fiddling with the straps of her backpack and shuffling her feet as she waited. regina’s enthusiasm was catching. DANCE STAR wasn't exactly her thing, but she couldn't wait to have the other girl all to herself.
‘ that sounds fun! but i bet your mom's tried it out a ton of times already . ’
CADY
a school camping trip. she had jumped on that idea so fast! an excuse to bring back a little slice of her old self amidst the plastics. of course, what was she thinking? regina george on a camping trip? no wonder mrs. george had gotten her daughter out of it last minute, and here cady was. stuck with someone that the plastics wouldn’t dare to give the time of day elsewise.
she’s still a plastic, which means she’s still a bitch but… this is her thing, and without regina around she’s peeling off that plastic facade, little by little.
“are you kidding? this is great!”
though, in the others defense, cady wasn’t exactly clear on what their this really was. she was just excited to be out and maybe actually catch a few stars tonight admits the tree branches, instead of being blinded by those city street lights lighting up the sky at night.
“where should we set camp – uh… – what’s your name again?”
janis wasn’t sure what she’d been expecting, but all the wide-eyed enthusiasm of a kid on christmas morning certainly wouldn’t have made her top ten. it was kind of dissarming — she wasn't sure whether to think it was cute or just kind of SUSPICIOUS. both eyebrows crept up incredulously towards her hairline, but as opposed to outwardly questioning the sudden change in tone, she bit her tongue.
‘ it’s janis. ’
she stole a quick glance around the clearing to get a feel for what everyone else was doing before turning back to her companion with an idle shrug.
‘ and i don’t know anything about camping, so unless you have any bright ideas. . . ’
CADY
“okay.”
“you wanna get outta here? you’re really the only person i want to spend today with.”
‘ that’s a pretty BOLD statement. ’
‘ your wish is my command, birthday girl. ’
REGINA
her hair was perfectly blonde today. her mother had just touched up her roots for her the night before which gave regina an extra bit of confidence.
“JanJan!”
backpack closed and swung over her shoulder at the sound of the final bell as she made her way over to janis’s desk. she could really be impatient, especially when it came to school it was difficult for her to sit still and not just talk to her best friend or try to pass notes or something. exactly the reason teachers sat them at opposite ends of the classroom.
“you’re coming home with me right?”
she’s fidgeting with the straps of her backpack as she anxiously waits for the other girl to pack up. the sooner they can get out of that place, the better. she had an unsettling desire to just be with janis, and none of these other jerks in their class. or teachers for that matter.
janis glanced sideways at her friend when she approached, still desperately trying to cram her stuff into her backpack. it’d probably help a little if her folder wasn’t bursting at the seems with miscellaneous doodles and notes they’d passed back and forth over the course of the day.
or if she had a bigger bag. . .
‘ sure, ’ janis grinned. with any other friend she might have had to call her mom or check that their parents were okay with it first, but not regina. they were INSEPERABLE, and had been for as long as she could remember.
‘ what are we gonna do today? ’
CADY (@lostkiids )
‘ WELL. this sucks. ’
janis stood with her hands in her pockets, watching as coach carr retreated in the direction of two exceptionally dumbfounded boys to help them assemble their tent. camping had seemed like a great idea at the off-set. she’d spent the past month envisioning a weekend-long sleepover with her best friend and an opportunity to watch a ton of spooky, wilderness-themed horror movies on the laptop he’d brought stashed at the bottom of his duffle-bag.
unfortunately that dream was dead and gone. boys and girl weren’t allowed to share tents for ‘obvious reasons’ (in coach carr’s own words), the irony of which escaped their blissfully ignorant school staff.
it was for that reason that janis found herself stood beside regina’s newest minion-in-training. the demon bitch herself was, of course, nowhere to be seen. janis liked to think of herself as relatively open-minded, but the thought of snuggling up with a wannabe plastic for the weekend was truly vomit-inducing.

CADY
cady can’t help the giggle that falls from her lips at janis’s hand gesture. perhaps her laugh in response is a bit childish, but she’s missed a bunch of years beig surrounded by peers, it’s understandable.
“really?” how innocently sincere that question was. “everyone seems to like her.” perhaps thats the main reason cady does, she loves the attention that follows with being around regina george. “if i had to pick a unappealing person it’d be like… kevin or shane. not regina.”
and there’s that text sh’d been waiting for, quickly grabbing her phone tot urn her attention away from her best friend for regina.
the corner of janis’ mouth turned up in a small smile. she couldn’t help it; cady’s giggle made her weak, which was doubtless a key factor in her new-found bitterness towards regina and cady’s blossoming ‘ friendship ’.
‘ AS IF, ’ janis said, shaking her head. ‘ only if by ‘like’ you mean ‘live in constant fear of’. ’
she opened her mouth to continue only to snap it shut again and raise her eyebrows at the sheer speed of cady’s movement. the girl was on her phone in seconds flat, which prompted janis to sit back in her seat with a look of utter disbelief on her face.
‘ SERIOUSLY? ’
CADY·
“oh, thanks for actually caring about my BIRTHDAY. i asked for a kiss, what is your problem?”
‘ shit, okay, that’s NOT what i meant i just... ’
‘ look, i’m sorry — okay? ’
CADY
honestly, she hadn’t given much thought to how her parents felt about regina and her new found friendships. they seemed to be happy she was making friends and all but, she didn’t really know how they felt. for better or worse. what opinion would make janis happy…
“they seem to like her.” she shrugs, glancing over at her phone. a littl disappointed she had no new messages. “they’re not really fans of aaron, but that’s probably just because he’s a boy and… you know… anyway, that doesn’t matter because i think he’s getting back together with regina and… why would i want to be with a guy like that?”
slight pause.
“but, you know, regina is easily appealing. of course they’re gonna love her. doesn’t everyone?” well, except janis and damian, duh.
‘ yeah, yeah. boys plus girls equals — ’
janis made a circle with her index finger and thumb, jabbing her other finger in and out repeatedly with a dramatic roll of her eyes. the fact that the heron’s couldn’t see the real threat to her daughter’s precious virtue was actually kind of sad.
‘ caddy, regina is the LEAST appealing person i think i’ve ever met in my whole life.’
not strictly true, all things considered, but cady didn’t need to know about any of that. janis was more than content to carry on under the pretence that she’d always hated regina passionately and without reason.
CADY
“how do you know what i want and don’t want? – you know, jay, just forget it. i don’t want to fight. not today.”
‘ i’m NOT trying to fight you, caddy. the only reason i even came to this STUPID party was to make sure you were okay. ’
CADY
@spacedyked CONTINUED
“there is no such thing as too much pepsi, thank you.”
“fine.”
“if you’re not gonna give me what i want then i uninvite you to all future parties. bye JayJay.”
‘ right, sure. trust me caddy — this is NOT what you want. ’
CADY
it’s nice that janis gives in. makes it a lot easier on cady. she’d rather not talk about the plastics because, honestly, she enjoyed being around them. being one of them. and janis was not going to like that. she didn’t want to let janis down, there was just something about her. how she and damian had been there for her right away, when no one else had. and even though regina george had picked her up it just… she felt like she belonged in both places.
“see, this is why i’m glad my family is just my mom and dad and i…” way to quickly make everything about yourself cady. she’s really turning into regina bit by bit. “my parents don’t even give a crap how i look, so long as i’m clothed and… even then.” as if janis didn’t already know these things.
‘ yeah, that's pretty lucky ’. janis said, conscious of the fact that her head was tilting a little as she attempted to figure out whether cady was trying to relate or trying to dominate the conversation. . .
‘ your parents seem chill. what do THEY think of regina? ’
she couldn’t imagine either of them endorsing their daughter’s friendship with the devil’s bitch but then, she didn’t know them well enough to comment either. she was also willing to concede and admit that her own opinion of regina was possibly somewhat more biased than the average bystander.
