I wonder if anyone’s written this fic idea.

Ryland was married to an Earth-version Simon, who worked with him on Project Hail Mary and died in the explosion that killed Dubois and Shapiro.

Maybe they met on the project and got married. Maybe they met in college, drifted apart for a few years, and reconnected while working on the project. Maybe they met in the middle of their lives. However it happened, they met, they fell in love, they worked together to save the Sun, and Simon died. Then Ryland was sent into space without even the memories— or the ashes of his husband to carry with him.

And then Simon from Iron Lung, who secretly fell in love with a fellow Eden brother named Grace.

Maybe Grace died at Filament Station while trying to sabotage the operation alongside Simon. Or maybe Grace was someone from Simon's younger years— a first love that became heresy when it was discovered that young Grace was planning to run away. He was killed, denied even a proper burial beneath the Last Tree, and simply jettisoned into space. But either way, they met, they fell in love, and Grace died. And Simon was left with his grief, his guilt, and the memories of the only person who truly loved him besides his mother.

Then the plot of PHM happens, and Iron Lung happens— and Rocky and Grace find something floating in space; a blood moon, a submarine, whatever. But Simon finds his Grace again. And Ryland finds his Simon. Except they're not the same men they fell in love with but they are.

Something about how I can relate everything to greek mythos if I squint hard enough. But YEAH so funny story, after posting this protoframe, had like a couple people going (give him a ryan gosling). And thus the rabbit hole began. I did in fact see both movies and working on the book and played the game (poorly).
