Afsaneh continued below deck, slowly. She was more on edge than usual after Krall. And even though she knew it was normal, at least relatively to have that reaction, she still wanted to run away from that feeling. Just when I thought things were safe. Just when I thought we were at peace.

She tried to force the thought out of her head, but failed as she remembered the facts. I sent the Enterprise to Altamid. I didn’t think that there would be a risk. I should have known it was a trap. But… that’s in the past. I can only deal with the fallout. And now, I am going to finish these reports, then relax. Or at least try.

When she finally got below decks, she saw a familiar form on the floor. “Commander? Are you alright?” She wasn’t sure what else to ask. He looked very still. Preemptively, Afsaneh reached for her comm unit.

Scotty had never felt grief like this; the kind that seemed to consume one’s entire being and render them utterly lifeless, alone, and longing for an end. He’d heard people speak of it; his mother had gone through something similar when she had lost his father. For weeks on end, his poor mum had just sat, staring into space, as if someone had drained the life from her. For almost two years after, he and his siblings had been raised by their grandparents, as their mum struggled just to exist.

He hadn’t understood it then, but now he did. And he hated it.

Taking another swig of scotch, the engineer raised his head, bleary-eyed and barely conscious. He just vaguely recognised the face; the dark hair and grey uniform. “Commodore? Wh... No’m fine. M’fine.. Just... had a bit too much t’drink is all...” He attempted to get to his feet, but failed, slumping into a seated position once more.

“Well, sometimes they just want ye to know that they’re there! She doesn’t need a bad reason to get your attention!” Christ, sometimes Scotty grew impatient with the close-mindedness of some people. Of course, he was probably being unreasonable. Not everyone had such insight into the minds of machines as he did, and very few sensed them in the way he did. “Sorry... Nevermind...”

Afsaneh watched in awe. At Scotty’s exclamation, she smiled and laughed partially with joy and partially with relief. Having the data back meant that her team had less work of restoring it and she had less paperwork explaining to command how the virus had escaped their notice.

“Thank you, Commander. And thank you Pria. I do appreciate all of your help. So the data wasn’t damaged? You’re right, I suppose that makes sense if Krall’s purpose was to gather information.” She was trying to clarify for her report. Even though the outcome had been better than expected, she had a lot of work to do.

“If you and Pria have some time, would you mind stepping into my office? I’d like to take a few notes for my report.”

There were moments that even Scotty even marveled at the ability of his beloved ship. There was yet a puzzle to best her, despite her young age, and this showed in her ability to retrieve the information that had been held to ransom by Krall’s invasion. Thankfully, it hadn’t been lost; merely sequestered away.

Pria materialized beside her father; taking the form that was most recognisable to her crew; that of a young woman donned in a monochrome iteration of the current Starfleet uniform. She stood still, her expression serene as she waited to be addressed; a habit she had become accustomed to while maintaining this form. “Well, I’ve not had a chance to have a good look through it, but it looks fine for the most part. As far as I can make out, ye were attacked by a centuries old bug known in the trade as ‘ransomware’. Sometimes the old techniques are the most effective” he mused, before raising his brow at her request.

“Aye, of course!” He gestured for Pria to follow, before getting to his feet and following the Commodore into her office.
