What? Chinese takeaway Why? A sudden burst of colour in my eye's playground to hook onto. Its boldness lines the edge of the steps. A corner feeling like it's splurging out towards me and therefore inviting me, taking advantage of my desire to be wanted. Myself aside, it is a complete picture, the steps giving a focal point (even though they are the duller colour) When? After a busy day of fulfilling work in a sunny mancunian bakery and a trip to Leon's to see if they had any fur. Moments before i had taken in the chip eye meal (picture to follow)
What? A spine in an antique shop Why? Bold white, lovely curves. A clearer shop window than when I usually go past, odd but human and familiar Where? On the way to town, took several other pictures on this journey after this one. Attention is contagious, once you become aware of the things around you you can’t stop looking/noticing
What? A door Why? A door leading to nowhere. Its funny to imagine someone opening it (if it didnt have this piece of writing this image would probably be as boring as hell) Where? Walking into town
What? Holes in the pavement and patchwork cement Why? Solid pavement seems ephemeral, what is down there beyond the darkness? Something you never really notice brought to our attention by its absence. Whilst at the same time things grow from the cement in between the spaces. Life and death (i have only just made that connection now. At the time I think I was just coaxed in by the shape) Where? Walking into town on my own
What? Map of park in Liverpool Why? Two matters meeting and having an effect on each other (paper and glass) the forceful resilience of one and the subordination of the other. Wrinkles of age, character Where? On walk with my family, mind more aware as I write dissertation but I still cannot get meaning from images until I force myself to write about them
What? Temporary metal structures Why? I noticed these around Venice and Italy. They caught my attention because of their size and faces. Big sheets suspended as if to say 'look at me'. But they had nothing to show but variation on the metal. Perhaps they reminded me of paintings all strung up next to eachother. The similar appearance to paintings made me appreciate the marks on the metal in a similar way, if not in a more affectionate way as the ego of the painter is taken out of the equation. Instead it is a strange mix of nature and functional manmade object. Your eyes are allowed to play with the object, rather than it feeling like there is one particular meaning that the artist had in mind. When? Walking through Venice on holiday, I had already seen one or two before but refrained from taking a photo
What? My friend's bedroom in the morning Why? Personal and sweet, lots of care taken within this small room, "I just want to fill it with lovely things even though noone's going to see them" family and friends and memories, prettiness What? Waking up top to tail in her single bed after a good night out
What? Worn away path in Poundland Why? Repeat activity, small movements adding together to make an impact, ghost What? Looking for cardboard boxes for a set
What? Pipecleaners in a craft shop Why? The projectile quality adds force and energy to the inanimate objects. The sheer volume also adds impact as your eyes are filled with the texture and colour of the otherwise thin objects. Why is it turned on its side rather than being upright like a pencil pot? When? I was looking for some gold trimming for a costume. I felt a little conscious whilst taking the photo because there were women browsing things near me..I don't really like people seeing me take photos. I also half thought the owner in the shop wouldn't want me to take photos...ownership of images, taking photos of people's property (a little like the Berliner squatters)
What? Paint on the side of a disused club Why? Reveal, bright….Did this building used to be bright yellow before it went dark purple? Quite a drastic change... only a small piece of yellow is revealed which makes it seem important, the centre of the image, sun, gold, heliocentric, vibrant, pure colour against rough wipes of plaster. Yellow always attracts me What was I doing? On my way to uni on my own (solitude brews gaz?)
What? A misplaced towel hanging up in John Lewis Why did I take the photo? I thought it was a shower scrubber in the shape of a haughty queen, cartoon style like tony ross' illustrations.. then I went nearer and realised it was just a towel. I took the picture because I was amazed my mind had come up with such a vivid face despite being a simple object. Label for eyes is interesting.. What was I doing? On my own Buying things for a set design
