FAQ - What are the stereotypes of asexual and aromantic characters?

These are just a few of the most harmful and common ones. Longer lists can be found here and here, and a list of asexual characters in popular fiction can be found here! 

Ace/aro nonhuman - robots, aliens, undead, etc. Can lead to the conclusion that ace/aro people are less than a whole person, or lacking emotion, which is a harmful stereotype that many ace/aro people deal with in their daily lives. This can be combated by showing the ace/aro character before they become undead, or by including a human ace/aro character in your story. Ideally, write the character as being likeable and sympathetic. Several things can be done to make them feel more nuanced and whole, in a way that diverts the stereotype regardless of the traits people often equate to non-human-ness.

Asexual/Aromantic villain - using a character’s lack of interest in sex/romantic relationship to make them seem uncaring or emotionless, and thus, cruel and villainous. If you are going to include an asexual or aromantic villain, do not make them seem emotionless, or have their evil motives be linked to their asexuality or aromanticism. I’d also include some other single allo people, so you don’t fall into the common trend of having everyone but the villain in a romantic/sexual relationship. Including non-villain asexual/aromantic characters always helps with this, as well! 

Traumatized Asexual - having a character come to identify as asexual after surviving sexual assault. Although this is something that does happen for many people, it can lead to some bad takeaway messages without clarity and care given to the subject (such as the idea that asexuality is something to be “cured” and that it is an inherently unhealthy, bad thing). If done, it needs to be written with plenty of attention and discussion around it, and portrayal of asexuality cannot be painted as being an unhealthy coping mechanism for an actually allosexual character.

Cold, distant ace/aro - often when ace/aro character is included in a story, they are portrayed as unfeeling or emotionless. This is an issue because this is a stereotype many ace/aro people battle in real life, and it is not a universal experience. If your ace/aro character seems relatively unfeeling to you, add a scene or two that shows their emotional range! If you feel it’s important to keep the character as is, consider discussing this stereotype in your story, and having it be something your character takes note of. Many people of any orientation can be cold and distant, and feeling a lot in very visible (or even concealed) ways is not necessary to be a compassionate and good person. Be ready to write these traits in ways that are sympathetic and likeable. Come to the end message that your character is not unfeeling or emotionless because they are asexual/aromantic. 

Fix-it asexual - someone who calls themselves asexual because they’re “too shy” or “too awkward” to get a partner, treating asexuality as a temporary condition that can be fixed with the right relationship, or a choice someone makes because they’re tired with the dating world or were spurned by someone. There’s no appropriate way to include a character like this. They aren’t ace, they’re a repressed allosexual. 

Ambiguously Asexual - when a character could easily be accepted as canonically asexual, but it is never confirmed. This is upsetting because it tempts ace people with representation they rarely get, and oftentimes the unconfirmed asexual characters end up in sexual relationships, to try to make the story seem palatable to a society that isn’t used to storylines with asexual characters. To combat this, confirm your character’s asexuality! If your allosexual character goes through struggles with wanting a relationship, their sexual desires, etc, make a distinction between this struggle, and the struggle between accepting one’s asexuality. 

Autistic = Asexual - This isn’t something to avoid, so much as be educated about doing properly. There are lots of autistic people who are also asexual, and lots of people whose neurodivergence and asexuality are hard to parse out separately for those people. There are even specific terms coined for folks whose identities stem from their neurodivergence. However, when writing these characters, and characters not like them but who share one identity, it’s usually the case that people will try and say something oppressive like, “don’t worry, I’m not like those autistic/asexual people,” which throws the other group under the bus. It’s not okay to use traits and identities of a marginalized group to try and hold yourself (or your characters) above them. It is okay to include them in your story, but they deserve to be represented in a way that is accurate and does right by people with this experience.

Asexual = Desexualization - This isn’t true, and is a very harmful idea to promote. Asexuality is an identity, an orientation, a sense of self, and does not have to do with sex itself. It’s about attraction, specifically the lack of it. Someone being asexual does not remove who they are as a whole person, or disqualify them from talking about sex or participating in it if they want to. Desexualization and oversexualization stem from the idea of projecting ideas onto someone in a way which limits them, rather than allowing people to have autonomy and their own voice. There are asexual people in every other demographic and it’s worth it to not erase (erACE haha) that experience.

I’d also add: Asexual=won’t have sex. While there are a lot of asexual people who are unwilling or unable to have sex for whatever reason, there are also ace people who do have sex, and there are allo people who don’t have sex and may never have or want sex. Try to avoid equating one directly with the other, and instead understand that asexuality is a lack of sexual attraction and not directly tied into sexual desire or a sex drive. Oblivious asexual. A lot of asexual people do know about sex/sexual things and may make or understand sexual jokes/references. I recommend also staying away from the asexual=innocent thing, partly because sex doesn’t make someone somehow not innocent, and not feeling attraction doesn’t make someone more innocent.

For the fix-it asexual, what I’ve seen a lot is a person is basically written as pseudo-demi without saying that they’re demi–they find the write person and suddenly miraculously want to have sex. And if you want to write a demi-ace or demi-aro character, please, go for it, be my guest, but say that they are and don’t have just the miraculous chosen one who they suddenly want to have sex with. (It reads a lot like the Straight Except for One Guy trope that showed up a lot in particularly 2000s fanfiction, where a man–say, John Watson–is super duper 100% straight except he meets and suddenly wants to have sex with Sherlock Holmes, but he’s still super duper straight, except he’s also having gay-panic because obviously bi people don’t exist. Sound annoying? Yeah, it’s the same feeling.)

I’d also add that, if you’re not asexual and/or autistic, I’d think long and hard before writing an autistic ace character. Not that you’re not allowed to, but there’s so much tied into the Sherlock-esque truly horrid representations of both being tied together, particularly in the guise of an asshole white man who is autistic-coded and aro/ace-coded, and the issues can be really tricky, particularly if you’re not ace and/or autistic. If you are going to do it, I recommend you talk to multiple ace autistic people not just about being ace and autistic but about how those two specifically interact.

🌊 Types of Mermaids 🌊

please be respectful of cultural boundaries when working with mermaids from various cultures and traditions, and be mindful not to intrude.

🌊 Rusalkas - slavic in origin, disturbed spirits of the “unclean dead”, ghosts of women who died violent deaths, with a penchant for drowning young men. they live only in rivers and lakes, and are known to have green hair like aquatic plants, only appearing in the night. 

🌊 Melusina - a mermaid that walks among humans, but returns to their two-tailed form during baths and when they bathe their children. often a water spirit of a nearby lake or river. french origin. 

🌊 Siren - greek mythology. servants and companions of persephone, whom searched for her when she was abducted. they are known to sometimes have the body of a bird, and for their song, which lured sailors to their doom. cannibalism implied folklore. have the power of prophecy. 

🌊 Merrow - irish mermaid. known to have green hair and webbed fingers. particular noted love of music and their red cap, which when stolen, they will live with the thief until they find it, and then return to the water, leaving even a whole family behind. 

🌊 Ben-varrey - from the isle of man, known to bless those that are kind to them with prosperity, gifts, and even the location of treasure. 

🌊 Aicaya -  Caribbean mermaid, humans who become mermaids when they are shunned from their community and go to live in the sea. 

🌊 Amabie - japanese merpeople, with birdlike torsos and three legs and scales. they are gifted with prophecy, usually foretelling abundant harvests or epidemics 

🌊 Ningyo - “human faced fish” known to have golden scales, that brings bad weather and misfortune when caught, but when their flesh is eaten the consumer is granted youth and beauty, even agelessness. 

🌊 Finman / Finwife - magical shapeshifters that disguise themselves as sea creatures or plants to lure humans, unlike most mermaids they kidnap people from the shores to be their spouses or servants. they have a greed for jewelry and coins, particularly silver, and prefer humans over other finfolk. 

🌊 Sirena Chilota - considered the more friendly mermaids, caring for all fish life and rescuing drowned sailors to restore life to them. known for their human-like beauty and youth, according to legend they are the child of a human and a “king of seas”, tears are a powerful substance. from chilote mythology. 

🌊 Cecealia - sometimes known as “sea witches”, they are half human and half octopus. origins in native american and japanese mythology. 

🌊 Sirena / Siyokoy - the philippine version of mermaid and merman respectively. also called “magindara”, they are known to protect the waters from raiders, and protect the boy moon from sea monsters. Siyokoys can sometimes have legs however, covered with scales and webbed feet

🌊 Sea Mither - scottish/orcadian mythology, a spirit that personifies the sea during spring and summer, battles along scottish isles using storms to bring the summer about. a mother figure to all aquatic life. 

🌊 Ceasg - a fresh-water mermaid, specifically half-salmon, said to grant three wishes if captured. sometimes called maighdean na tuinne (maid of the wave) or maighdean mhara (maid of the sea). scottish. 

🌊 Selkie - though somewhat different from the typical mermaid, as they are not cold-blooded, have the body of a seal in the water and are human on land. in legends their skins are often stolen and they are kept by fishermen as spouses, or become lovers to fishermen’s wives who shed tears into the sea.

Questions to Ask When Developing: Character Appearance

Hey everyone, Abby here! Today I’m coming at you with something a little different from the usual “advice on a certain topic”; this is something that has a lot to do with development instead. So what I’m going to do is think of as many questions as I can about character appearances and list them all here; hopefully it helps!

The Questions

What color are their eyes? 

Do they have heterochromia or anything like it?

How tall are they? 

How much do they weigh?

Are the answers to the previous two questions about the same as the average where your character lives?

What are your character’s three most prominent features?

Which of their features are they the most proud of?

Which of them are they most insecure about?

What color is their hair?

What is their favorite hairstyle? Do they wear it like this daily?

How much do they actually care about their hair?

Do they enjoy changing the style and color often, or will they wear it the same way their whole lives given the chance?

What race (or races) is your character?

Do they have any tattoos or scars?

How easily do they emote? 

Do they have a generally emotional face?

Which emotion do they most easily show?

Do they enjoy wearing makeup? If yes, do they prefer a more subtle or bold look?

Do they enjoy wearing jewelry? If yes, what sort do they prefer (necklace, bracelet, ring, etc.)?

How often do they wear makeup or jewelry?

Does you character ever wear merchandise for things they like?

Are they more likely to be found in a long- or short-sleeved shirt?

If your character had the opportunity, would they choose ripped or regular jeans?

Do they wear hats often? If yes, which one do they wear the most?

Take a look at their wardrobe. Which color is most prominently featured?

Still looking at their wardrobe, how would you describe the color scheme: monochromatic, gray-ish, pastels, earth tones, bright colors, or all over the place?

What is their favorite article of clothing to wear? Do they wear it more for look or for feel?

When choosing their clothes, does your character base their decision on look, feel, or both?

What constitutes as pajamas for them? Does it have to be strictly things meant to be pajamas or just anything comfortable enough to sleep in?

Your character has nothing to do today; they’re staying at home and nobody super important is going to see them. How are they dressed?

I think an important thing to note is that people aren’t one type only! So you may find that though you’re an “I” some of the “E” things also apply to you. The MBTI personality types will identify the thought processes that you’re most likely to use but each person has the potential to use all of them. So you don’t have to expect a person to adhere to all those items in the list for their type.

give me a newly-turned twenty-something vampire who hears about their newfound immortality and is like “thank god,” then proceeds to invest in some promising startups and fucks off to take a nap for two decades

give me a vampire thats only the tiniest bit phased at the blood diet because “eh, i tried paleo a while back and it was just as weird”

give me a vampire with self image issues who never has to avoid mirrors again because - bingo - no reflection

give me a genderqueer vampire who finally has an answer when someone asks their gender. “are you a boy or a girl?” “i am a vampire.” “but whats in your pants?” “fangs.” 

best of all, give me a vampire chick who is so stoked about being nocturnal because she’s never been able to walk alone after dark before and it’s nice to be able to walk her friends home and know theyre all safe with her
