Spencer Johnson was adopted to the Johnson family when he was six years old to Mary and Oliver Johnson. Unlike his older brother Joshua and younger sister Savannah, Spencer was never really accepted into the family. It hadnât always been like this growing up. For the first three years of his life, both Johnson parents treated him like the apple of their eye. Treating him as if he was one of their own, until the day little Spencer met his grandparents. Being the only colored adopted child of the Johnsonâs, Abigail Johnson refused to recognize the young boy as family, which only led to his parents shift in view towards Spencer.
 Constantly having to prove himself to not only his family, but to himself as well, Spencer didnât make much time for activities outside of sports that would look good on his college applications. Freshman year of high school, it was clear to him that he wasnât going to get any help from his parents to cover the cost of college, so Spencer took it into his own hands. Meeting almost everyday with his guidance counselor during his lunch hour, the young man talked about all his options to get into the best college, starting with the application he would have to fill out to get into the best private school in the state.
 Knowing his dad would never give him the money to enroll in a private school, Spencer opted out on long nights out with friends to get his grades into a standing where any school would be proud to open their doors to a brilliant mind like his. It had only taken a few short months, but the day he had received his acceptance letter Spencer was overjoyed. Little did he know it was about to change his life forever.
 With a full-ride scholarship, Spencer walked the halls to his new school at the start of second semester. Eager to put himself to work in hopes that Yale could potentially be a part of his future. That changed however, the day he met Eleanore that very first day of school. Becoming immediate friends as they sat next to each other in Science. From that point on, it was very rare youâd ever see one without the other, talking at the same lunch table every day, talking in the halls between classes or just hanging out on the steps of the school as they struggled to part ways at the end of the day.
 It wasnât long before Spencer slowly started to fall for his best friend, which all but stopped his heart when it came to light that she had felt the same way about him. Taking the natural step, Spencer asked her to be his girlfriend and from what he could tell, they lived a very happy life together until the day her parents first met him. It was clear from the start that they didnât think he was good enough for their daughter because of his lack of status. They had made that perfectly clear by the way they constantly berated everything he would say. Sneaking around her parents back, it wasnât long before they found themselves sleeping together, which led into his girlfriend getting pregnant.
 When she had first told him, he was ecstatic. He knew it would be a lot of work, but he would do whatever it took to make sure his little family would have everything they could ever need. Even going as far as picking up an after school job so he would be able to fund anything that his girlfriend could possibly need. Including an engagement ring that he planned on giving her on their graduation day.
Only he never had the chance to do so as one day, she just stopped coming to school. He would wait day after day for her to come back, answer her phone or even the front door when he would go to her house, but the answer was always the same. She wasnât taking visitors until the day her mother finally told him the truth. That she was shipped to an all girls school, and wouldnât be returning. Broken-hearted he continued his year out until graduation where he left Florida for good. Not wanting to think twice about the life he left behind.
 Graduating top of his class Spencer jumped around from job to job before he finally moved to Seattle six months ago with a job of a lifetime. Being good friends with the editor in chief of The Seattle Times, Spencer joined the team of editors, never once forgetting about the girl he had left behind, hoping to one day see her, and their child again.
