this is the rambling website so i'm gonna ramble but i find it deeply weird that a lot of people, mostly white people, came out of the drama believing it was their job to assess whether or not emma's character (who did not actualise any plans for a school shooting, but took steps to do it before backing out and dedicating herself to gun control—again, could not be more sympathetic) is worthy of "forgiveness" or whether they would behave in similar ways to her fuckass white boyfriend, who did not take responsibility for any of the shit he actually, materially did.
her friends all materially harm people—physically, emotionally, psychologically and none of them are even willing to confront what this says about them or take steps in order to address the material harm they've caused. they're embarrassed or dismissive or facetious regarding the things they've done. emma DID nothing, but has to respond for trauma and harm she did not cause. she's pathologised for it, and people reframe her character around mistakes she did not make in the worst period of her life, and they refuse to allow her to frame it on her terms, with her own language. they make up motivations, because the ones she gives do not assuage their anxieties about her (in their minds, heightened) capacity for violence.
and i find it crazy that some of you come out of this movie thinking of it as a moral dilemma when it's very clearly trying to discuss, at least to some degree, what harm is and what kind of harm counts and how to address harm and how responsibility for harm is heavily dependent not on the actualisation or perpetuation of that harm, but rather on who we believe is more capable of doing harmful, violent things. i cannot imagine a version of this script in which emma is not black btw because of this. people cannot see past her former self, or the assumptions they have about the kind of violence they believe black people to be capable of inflicting, and it dulls their ability to apprehend emma's complexity. should we reduce someone to the worst possible moment of their lives, should we judge people by looking at their worst mistakes? are we fair when we do this?
