Actually let me talk about the Trolley Operators in this crossover because yes Stratt and Ava are the only people who’d really grasp the horror of the position they’re in. But I do think despite the empathy there, you would also have discomfort and even rejection, maybe? Because Ava does something we know might make Stratt’s skin crawl, and that’s the way she tries belatedly tries to pull her punches.

“How is she pulling her punches she literally welds Simon into the Iron Lung-” She insists she doesn’t want him to die. She denies the journey as an execution even when, as Simon insists, there’s no need to lie. There’s not enough of us left to be throwing lives away. After the third time Simon tries to apologize without a sorry for the camara, she tries to forgive him without a sorry, too. She sounds guilty and defeated when she admits she doesn’t know his name. She offers her name, first. She softly says this isn’t punishment. It’s not fair. She tries to give him hope, It might sound crazy but we have gotten people out before. She says it’s worth it. She says it’s bigger than us. But it’s not. Simon is right. Some bone fragment was never going to be worth this torture. They were grasping at straws. The black box was a fluke. Ava was lying since the beginning, but she’s lying because she needs to believe it. She reaches out to Simon because she doesn’t want him dead and because she’s convincing herself that she isn’t actually killing and torturing him. That it’s a calculated risk.

It’s not the attempted mercy that would make Stratt’s skin crawl. I want to make that clear. Stratt tried to grant all sorts of comfort to the Hail Mary’s crew, too. The problem is Ava’s the sort of. denial? Or even how she sort of broke. The way Ava avoids admitting to herself and Simon that he was always going to die. That it might not have been worth it. Stop pretending this is about your students. It’s insulting. Stratt couldn’t and wouldn’t look away from what she was doing. Ava strikes me as someone who needs to look away to keep her sanity intact. So they’re not a perfect match. But maybe they’re better for it.
