Anticipation is the worst part
I am Nyxlyn, the only daughter of the ruler of Hell and the Damned. The first thing one must learn of demons is that we’re not what Christians imagine. We are merely fallen angels, created when our Ruler, Lucifer, my father, was cast from heaven. It has been my decision it is better to be us than the divine angels. We are the ones who have fought for our beloved human’s free will. We are the ones who take in those rejected by heaven due to rules in a silly book. Ones meant to demand blind devotion instead of giving followers the courtesy of earning respect and faith. We ask for nothing. We take in and love all the Damned. No matter what their sins. My eldest brother, Niasa, is the heir to the throne. I am what many in monarchies call “the spare” but I hold no delusions I may ever be the Queen because angels are immortal. Niasa is only considered an heir because my father may choose to relinquish his reign someday (though I am doubtful). And my brother does partake in learning the responsibilities and role of a King, as any standard prince does. The only difference is that passing on the crown isn’t really expected. To adequately learn his regal requirements, my brother must be close to my father, but we still have a promise to fulfill to our subjects, including the living ones. Niasa has asked me to go earth side. I cannot go in my current demonic/angelic form, so this requires a possession of a host. There are very strict rules when it comes to possession, as it is technically removing free will from the host and that oath is the basis of our reign. But it is necessary. The first rule: The host must not be devoted to God (by any name). They have chosen the path to Him and we will not interfere with their desire. The second rule: The host must have subconscious agreement before their possession. They won’t know they are possessed, and they will believe the decisions you make are their own. Your thoughts become theirs. Their thoughts become yours. The third rule: Once you have a host, they are your only host for the duration of their life. The forth rule: You may only possess a host on their birthday. The host has completed a full rotation around the sun and thus at a beginning for their next year of life. There is less of a chance of rejection of your thoughts, which is for your safety. If a host rejects you, you are trapped in their body with no control until they die. The fifth rule: You may visit Hell when your host is asleep. Or you may take the chance to rest yourself.
This would be my first possession, so I didn’t know what to expect of the experience. I only knew the soul of the woman I was to possess. She is a mother of two sons, one just three and the other a year and a half. She was a practicing Wiccan and owns 10 cats, most of them black. She is married and is to turn 31 on her coming birthday. She works in a call center. She loved to sleep. This was exciting to me, because it meant I could take frequent trips home, which I felt I would, at least at first, because I already felt homesick at due to the nervousness and anticipation of leaving.
I fought hard within myself to not plead with my brother for me to stay. I wanted to remain in my spoiled life as a princess, but I knew that the title came with privilege honorably only if I deserved it and I needed to do my part for my subjects, even if they didn’t know who I was yet. And 50-60 years was a short time compared to eternity. I approached my room to bid by father and brother good- bye. They seemed busy when I knocked on the chamber door and requested entry, but they welcomed me warmly. My brother took my hand and kissed it, I kissed his cheek. My father hugged me in a tight embrace.
“You will do us proud,” he promised. Niasa nodded in agreement.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” I swore.
Niasa poured us each a glass of wine and we clinked the glasses in cheers. As we drank the sweet liquid coated my tongue and I felt a pang of sadness that I had to leave this behind except for visits that would seem so short. Hours are nothing when you’ve always been and always will be. I decided to try to savor this moment until I permanently return again. At least for a couple of centuries.
