Overall, you had a good time at your birthday party. You were surrounded by your friends and Sarah had really outdone herself hosting. Nate had commented in the cab ride home how cool all of your friends were, and you were so glad that he got along well with them. You wondered what he would’ve thought of JJ.

The next morning, JJ still hadn’t messaged you back and you were starting to get concerned. Your best friend had missed your birthday party and had gone completely AWOL, which was so unlike him. Dread gnawed a pit into your stomach and you hoped that something hadn’t gone horribly wrong. You decided to go to the chateau to check on him.

It was safe to say things were completely finished between you and Rafe. He had moved on, that was abundantly clear, and he had made a spectacle out of letting you know it.

“This is the girl that gave me the hickeys.”

You reread the message over and over, the image of the two of them burned into your memory. There was a numbing feeling, like your mind had gone completely blank. Swallowing the lump that had formed in your throat, you exited the app and locked your phone.

“Y/N, I-”

“Please don’t,” you interrupted, eyes still cast downwards at your phone. You couldn’t bring yourself to look at JJ yet. “I’m fine, I just need a minute.” You took a few deep breaths, trying to steady yourself.

When you finally met his eyes, the look of care and concern he displayed made your chest swell with emotion.

“J, I love you, but please don’t look at me like that,” you pleaded. “I’m totally fine, I’m not going to cry, but if you keep looking at me like I’m made of glass, I might just shatter.” Your voice caught at the end.

“Do you not think Rafe knows that I care already?” you questioned, still tucked in your blanket and cuddled into Kie’s side. She ran her fingers through your hair, the sensation comforting. Pope looked at you from his position beside John B, a new can of beer resting in his grasp. 

“Right now, all Rafe can probably think about is what we did and how you hurt him. You need to be there for him, when he needs it the most. Don’t wait for him to come calling, you go to him.” Pope clarified, earning a nod from his brunet friend beside him. You sighed in frustration, your head swinging to rest on the back of the couch. 

“I don’t think I’ll even get this far at this point, it’s all too complicated,” you complained.

“We’ll be there to help you along the way,” Kie soothed you, but you rolled your eyes glancing at JJ and made a snarky comment about how you’ve heard that one before. After a surprise visit from a special someone, nothing could ruin your good mood. When you got to The Wreck to work your next shift, you glanced at the schedule to see who you’d be working with. Nate. This day just kept getting better and better.

“Hey, look who it is!” you heard from behind you, spinning around to see your favourite colleague. “I’m sorry I had to duck out early last shift.”

You had completely forgotten about that, not that it had bothered you in the first place. The surprise by your car was the only thing that stuck out in your memory. “I told you Nate, no biggie!”

“How was your thanksgiving?!” Nate asked, a huge smile on his face.

You considered telling him about the visit you had gotten, but what would you even say? It was too complicated to describe your relationship with Rafe, and you didn’t have a lot of time before you both had to get to work. Another story for another day, you thought to yourself, and probably after a few drinks.

“It was great thanks, how was yours? How did it go with your sister?”

As happy as you were to change the subject from you, you genuinely wanted to know more about his family. He seemed so excited to tell you about his sister, and he quickly ran through some of the things they had done together. 

As he walked out to the floor to start his shift, you told him you’d be there in a minute and walked to the restroom. After splashing some cold water on your face, you smiled at yourself in the mirror, thinking back to what had transpired the weekend before.

Even though he wasn’t your boyfriend, it certainly felt like it sometimes. You both agreed that you didn’t want to jeopardize anything by moving too fast, or by trying to jump into something too quickly. You settled on staying friends, who more than occasionally saw each other naked. But it felt like more than that. It felt like he was yours and you were his, even if you didn’t have the labels.

You awoke the next morning to find your bed empty. Pushing away the sinking feeling in your chest, you walked to your shower to wash off the remnants of the night before.

Your head was reeling, not from the alcohol, but with the memories of what had happened last night. Your whole body was on fire just thinking about it. You could still feel Rafe’s lips on your skin, his breath, hot on your neck. You knew you had crossed a boundary that you couldn’t come back from, but it felt like your body had disassociated from your brain. Logic failed, and what you craved was him, all of him.

Your thoughts were interrupted by your alarm going off. You jumped out of the shower, wrapped yourself in a towel and grabbed your phone to silence it. When you picked it up, you saw the notifications still on your lockscreen. You had forgotten to call JJ back, and he had called two more times.

Shit, you thought to yourself, he’s going to kill me. You quickly got dressed and drove in the direction of the chateau, stopping to grab some coffees as a peace offering on the way.

this was your personal hell. coming to terms with losing the one constant in your life, the one person that had been there through thick and thin. losing pope was the one thing you were convinced you couldn’t handle, and now you were being forced to deal with the one scenario you hoped would never happen. 

you wanted to be happy for him, and part of you was, but there was a part of you that couldn’t let pope go. you couldn’t slap on a smile and send him off with a head full of positive thoughts. you couldn’t handle it. you didn’t know how to say goodbye to the one person that promised to never leave. 

sure, he wasn’t leaving leaving, but he wouldn’t be down the road anymore. pope could move to new york or all the way to russia, in your mind it was all the same. 

being states away meant you wouldn’t be able to walk to pope’s house after a bad day. you wouldn’t be able to show up to the dock on a good day, smile wide and ready to shift into a pout if need be to convince pope’s dad to let you steal him away. you wouldn’t be able to spontaneously invite him to dinner on sundays, or study at his kitchen table past midnight. 

pope was leaving, and you had to come to terms with that.
