Square One: A Glee SYOC

Former Broadway Star, Freddy Ross, is down on his luck and winds up back in his hometown of Lima, Ohio. Grumpy and directionless, he finds himself back at square one doing the thing he never thought he'd do—teach high school. SYOC.

How goes the character hunt?

It’s going. Not much really to say though. I’ll probably add some characters closer to the deadline.

Are there any characters or story arcs you are particularly happy about?

There are a few that I’m happy/excited for. Claire has a storyline that I’m excited for and so does Alastair. There’s a storyline for Nataly a bit down the line that I’m excited for as well.

Do you have any ships (romantic or platonic) yet?

I have very few romances planned out yet, I’m waiting to see what the full cast list is before I decide, but there are some potential ones that I’m a bit excited for (which I won’t say, because spoilers).

As for platonic, I think Jamie and Claire have a really sweet friendship (which you guys will see soon) and Nataly and Gillian’s friendship is really fun and pure as well.

Do any of you guys have any ships, romantic or platonic, just based off of the character bios and physical appearance?

Who do you think the characters you added today are most like in the Glee universe?

Alastair Korvac - I would say Alastair is also like Finn, probably more so than Jamie. He’s a very friendly jock and never liked being a bully, and can be very susceptible to peer pressure, kind of how Finn was in the very beginning of the show. I also think the two will go through some similar arcs as well, but it may be too early to say.

Viviana Campbell- She seems more like Kitty than any of the other Cheerio-types. She’s very youthful and a bit of a diva that reminds me more of Kitty than Quinn or Santana, but she does kind of remind me of Rachel in that respect. There are some elements of early seasons Quinn in her, but maybe a little bit more childish.

Kat Bailey- Definitely Marley. She’s a very sweet, almost a girl-next-door type, but she’s had her issues and trauma, similar to what Marley went through on her seasons. She also tends to mask her sadness and her issues, something that Marley also did (if I remember correctly, it’s been a while since I watched glee past season three). She’s also a bit like season one Tina, with her shyness.

How would we know if you accepted our character or characters if you haven’t posted about them yet?

I’ll post a final cast list either on or before March 14th. I still have some people wanting to submit characters, so I don’t want to make a final decision yet. The ones I have posted about are ones that I’m sure of, which is why I posted them early, but if you’re character hasn’t been posted yet, that means I’m still deciding whether I want to use them or not! I hope this makes sense and is clear enough for you!

Do any of the characters play an instrument?

Jamie plays a lot of different instruments. He started out on piano when he was seven, taught by his mom. He learned guitar and drums on his own when he was 10 and he played clarinet in sixth grade band up until he was a sophomore, but doesn’t play it as often anymore.

Claire does not play any instruments.

Gillian plays the piano and guitar.

Douglas plays guitar, ukelele and piano.

Nataly can play the guitar pretty well and knows the basics of piano.

Alastair is alright at guitar, but would need a lot more practice before making any performances.

Viviana plays the drums and a little bit of the piano.

Kat plays the drums and various percussive instruments, but not mallets. She likes all of the fun auxiliary percussion. She would be in band if she had the time.

As you’ve probably seen, I added some new characters. I am still accepting characters until March 14th, so if you’re character isn’t on this list yet, don’t worry, I’m still deciding on a few.

I am however, pretty set on my female characters (I might accept a couple more), so I’d appreciate a lot more boy characters!

How many more characters do you need?

It really depends! Ideally, I’d really only need 12 (6 girls and 6 boys), but if I get a couple more that I really like, I’m willing to add in some extras. No more than 16 characters though, so in between 12-15.

Which glee characters do you think each of the main characters are most like?

Jamie Oliver- I think Jamie is probably most like Finn or Sam. He’s definitely going to be the leader of the glee club (I mean, he’s the one trying to get it started up again), but he’s also got a bit of awkward dorkiness that kind of reminds me of Artie in a way.

Claire Newman- Quinn for sure. She’s more of a grown up Quinn though, not one so obsessed with popularity and status, but one more focused on being the best at everything and being successful in life. She’s definitely the queen bee though, that’s for sure.

Gillian Alvaro- I’m getting very Rachel vibes from Gillian, if Rachel was a Cheerio. She used to compete in beauty competitions as a child, similar to Rachel being in the dance competition world. They have very similar personalities, being very take charge and pushy at times.

Douglas Wilder- Maybe Mike? He’s a very quiet and introverted jock, and I always got that from Mike as well. He could also be Tina somewhat, but I think Mike fits him better.

Nataly Novak- It’s a toss-up between Brittany and Kurt. It’s a kinda weird combination, but I think that Nataly has a lot of the same airiness, bubbliness, and even flirtiness that Brittany has, with the same fashion sense and sarcasm that Kurt had. Nataly was probably the hardest to place but I think Kurt and Brittany fit her well.

Does Nataly do any clubs? She definitely sounds like she'd be part of the school newspaper.

Nataly actually was apart of the school newspaper, but she quit because there were too many rules and guidelines, and she wanted a platform where she couldn’t be censored. She now runs an “anonymous” twitter school gossip account, but everyone knows that it’s her.

Do you know how many characters you’re thinking will be a part of your main cast?

I think I want at least twelve, with 6 boys and 6 girls. I may be willing to go over that limit if there are characters that I really like and want in my story, but I don’t want too many because then it’ll get to be too much. I think the maximum number of characters I’ll take is either 14 or 15.

I am already loving these submitted characters btw! Douglas has such an interesting backstory and I like how he goes against the grain of average football players, Gillian sounds like a total boss and Nataly is just precious!

Douglas has...a very interesting backstory that I’m kinda excited to get into. Definitely not your typical jock for sure. I totally agree, Gillian is a badass boss lady and Nataly is just gonna be so much fun to write!

I don't know why, but I feel like Nataly and Gillian would either be best friends or absolutely hate each other. And Claire is just adorable.

Not to give too much away, but I do have some things planned for Nataly and Gillian. And I’m not sure adorable is the word I’d use to describe Claire, but I do have to agree she can be pretty adorable when she wants to!

Out of curiosity, so you plan on doing family sets of the submitted characters like you did for Jamie's and Freddy's family?

Yes, I’m hoping to once I get all of my main characters selected. I’m probably going to end up redoing a lot of the family posts as well, like the ones for Jamie and Freddy.
