first time meeting fuckshit.
a few years ago, if somebody told you you would be moving to Los Angeles, you would have laughed in their face and told them they were out of their fucking mind
hot sun blazing down on your skin as you walked the busy sidewalks of California, trying to find a nearby skate shop
palm trees swayed lazily overhead while old Hondas and pickup trucks crawled through traffic, windows rolled down with bass-heavy hiphop spilling into the streets.
about a week after moving here, you had completely fucked up your board, snapping it in half after landing a tre flip wrong
as you walked, observing the people on the other side of the street, you noticed some little shop, tucked between a clothing shop and a market
from where you were standing, you could faintly make out the row of skateboards adorning the left wall of the shop and racks of clothing tucked into the opposite corner
you quickly jogged across the street, ignoring the numerous cars that had stopped and honked at you to get off the road
you looked up at the shop name, squinting slightly to block out the sun shining from above
with a slight shrug of your shoulders, you decided to pull open the door of the shop
cool air and the scent of cigarettes and cheap cologne immediately replaced the hot air from outside
a bell chimed above you as you walked in, announcing a new customer
there was some rap song playing faintly near the back, loud enough to be heard, but quiet enough that it didn’t blast into your ears
there was a group of boys, three of them, sitting down on a worn out leather couch near the back of the store, too engrossed in the conversation they were having to spare you a glance
one was sprawled out on one couch— buzzed head, looking no older than 14– and holding a cigarette in his hand
the other two, a dark skinned with locs and a light skin holding a camcorder, were sitting on the other couch, laughing at something you hadn’t heard
they looked to be around your age
“ Yo, you guys are dumb as shit!” Another boy laughed, shaking his head
You turned and saw him, sitting slumped on a black stool behind the counter
He turned his attention away from the group of boys, still laughing faintly at the conversation they were just having before you walked in
He had long, golden colored curls and the prettiest blue eyes you had ever seen
“ Yo,“ He greeted lazily, sitting up from the stool and not hiding the way he was looking you up and down
You walked over to the counter
“ Need a new board. Snapped mine like a week ago.” You said, eyes glancing towards all the boards on the wall behind him
“ Fuck, you snapped that shit?” He asked with a quiet laugh, turning around to pick out a few complete boards for you
“ Yeah, did a tre flip and landed like shit.”
He gave a small understanding nod, running a hand through his curls
He pulled down a few boards, setting them carefully across the sticker covered countertop
" So this one's a Blind." He tapped a deck with a faded skull graphic. "Good board and durable fuckin’ wheels "
He slid another one beside it.
"This one's just a basic shop deck. Nothin' special, but it'll get the job done."
Then he grabbed one more, flipping it over so you could see the graphic—a bright, beat-up design with chipped lettering.
"And this one's a Chocolate."
Your eyes ran over the wheels, trucks, and grip tape of the boards, trying to figure out which one would be best for you.
But before you could say anything, one of the boys from the couch spoke
“ Yo, you new around here? Feel like we haven’t seen you around.” The dark skinned boy asked, looking over at the two other boys for confirmation
They nodded, trying to remember if they had seen you anywhere before but they hadn’t
“ Yeah, just moved here last week.” You answered, looking over at them
“ You know any spots around here?” The curly haired boy asked
You turned back to look at him, shaking your head
He shared a look with the three boys on the couch
“ Uh, we heading to the courthouse later,” He scratched the back of his neck, a smirk tugging at his lips “ You should come.”
“ Courthouse?” You asked, confusion evident in your voice
“ Super fuckin’ illegal, but it has the best ramps and rails.” He explained, motioning with his hands
You thought about it for a second.
“ I’ll be there.” You decided, giving him a small smile
“ Aight bet,” He said, rubbing his hands together
“ So which one is it? “ He asked, looking down at the three skateboards on the counter
You tilted your head at them, ultimately deciding on one
“ Uh, I’ll take the blind one.” You said, reaching into the pocket of your shorts for the money you brought
“ Nah, nah, it’s all good.” He grinned
“ It’s on the house. Think of it as a welcome gift.”
The boys from the couch all snickered
“ Yo fuckshit! You gon make us go out of business.” The dark skinned boy teased
You turned around to look at them and then back to the boy infront of you
“ Fuckshit?” You asked, a smile tugging at your lips
He shook his golden head of curls, “ It’s just, whenever I see sum cool, I say, ‘ fuck, shit, that was dope.’”
He slid the skateboard over to you
“ Well, that’s a cool nickname.” You teased, grabbing the skateboard
He smirked as he saw you leaving. “ See yo fine ass at the courthouse later?”
You couldn’t help the small laugh that escaped your lips.
“ I’ll see ya later fuckshit.”
You walked out of the shop, not offering him a second glance as the bell dinged after you
