Loving The Hermitage in Menteng, Jakarta! This old Dutch telecommunications building has been expertly restored into an absolutely beautiful hotel that elegantly maintains its historic character. I highly recommend staying here while in Jakarta!
Our latest adventure begins…on a layover in Taipei on our way to Jakarta to celebrate my grandmother’s 90th birthday!

Family, friends and lots of babies!
Mangosteen This is a fun fruit not often seen in the U.S. It has a thick outer skin that's broken apart and peeled off to reveal some fleshy lobes of sweet and slightly tart fruit. Fun fact: you can tell how many segments of fruit are on the inside by counting the number of segments on the "asterisk" on the outside of the fruit!
Merah Putih We wanted to hit a special place on our last night in Bali and fortunately came across Merah Putih. The night we went, they were actually still in the middle of a soft opening, so we were fortunate to get a table for that night. The decor and architecture in this place is stunning -- I wish I had taken more pictures, but you can see some professional pictures at their website: Merah Putih. The white columns in the dining room actually funnel rainwater down to create a cool visual effect. For once I was disappointed it wasn't raining, but just another reason to come back! The menu was very interesting - the left half had more "westernized" Asian dishes while the right half of the menu tried to stick to more traditional Indonesian fare. All of the dishes sounded amazing, however since it was our last night in Indonesia, we wanted to focus on Indonesian cuisine. We ordered several dishes that were all very good, however it seemed that everything we happened to order was deep-fried. Towards the end of our dinner, one of the owners came by to see how we were enjoying our dinner. Julie commented to him about everything being deep-fried, and he graciously accepted our feedback. He commented that many Indonesian dishes are in fact deep-fried, but indicated that he would make an effort to balance the menu out a bit more with some non-fried options. We enjoyed conversing with him and even carried on our conversation at the bar afterwards for some post-dinner drinks. Visually, the restaurant is very impressive. I think it will be a worthy competitor to the other big hitters in Seminyak, including Ku De Ta, Potato Head, and Mozaic Beach Club. I am looking forward to a repeat visit here when we're back in Bali! http://www.merahputihbali.com/ Video overview of Merah Putih: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gHvQI4AhAI
