this is about his MBTI. i have a big interest in MBTI & enneagram stuff. those of you who dont may have no idea what im talking about, but i suppose i could always post more about it if anyone likes to learn it. just ask me! btw, THIS IS SUPER LONG, SO…

-> so, one major consensus ive seen, is that Harlan is probably an ENTJ, and this is 100% a stereotype in my opinion. people boil down MBTI types & their cognitive functions into the most bare tropes and then apply them to people. you see, ENTJs are Te doms (Extroverted Thinking) which is stereotyped as loud, dominating, in charge, temperamental, ect.

ENTJs also use Ni (Introverted Intuition) which is seen as the “future vision” function, and there is the silly idea that those who have written science fiction “can predict the future.” Harlan himself has said this is wrong many, many times. the argument that “only a Ni user could have written IHNMAIMS” because it “accurately predicted out future with AI” is just silly. anyone could’ve predicted issues with AI & computers, if they’re smart. its pretty obvious, and its also obvious that humans would/will do these things. as Harlan had tried to explain before, eventually an idea they write about will come true.

Harlan’s MBTI = most likely.. ENTP. NeTiFeSi. for reference, ENTJ uses TeNiSeFi. ill explain each.

Harlan’s use of Ne // “I’m looking for … what I’ve never seen before.” -> this is extremely obvious to me. i really think it should be obvious to everyone. Ne (Extroverted Intuition) is all about learning, exploring, experimenting, coming up with new ideas, finding connections, and Ne doms are extremely curious people. Harlan is the opitome of curiosity. in his dating profile, for example (which I’ll use as a perfect example a lot), he puts a lot of emphasis on how he wants to explore every place he possibly can, write about every topic he possibly can, he wants to see something new, he wants to learn something new.

Harlan owned a huge amount of dictionaries, encyclopedias… books of every topic possible, on animals, music, people, cultures, words… not only to learn for himself, but “just in case” he ever needed the perfect word for a story, or needed to do a lot of research on a random topic. he needed to constantly share information he had stored in his brain and would interject in an interview with random knowledge that had nothing to do with anything. his house needed to be a reflection of his brain, filled with sculpures and art and built exactly how he imagined living in “wonderland” (and yes, this is Ne, not Se. not everything physical is automatically Se.) he could come up with an idea and have it all explored completely in his head and written out in a single night because he just couldnt stop imagining.

Harlan’s use of Ti // “I hate whatever keeps people stupid.” -> this is also extremely obvious to me. and this is where i really differentiate him from the Te dom stereotype. Ti, as i explained before, is all about accuracy, internal logic, how things work, things can change, curiosity. this goes hand in hand with his Ne, which is why hes a Ne-Ti user first and foremost. Te users are looking for.. basically a solution, something getting done, they want results. Ti is all about what makes sense. Harlan wanted things to make sense. he got angry if it made no logical sense. he actually would concede on changing a script of his.. if it made sense and was needed.

for example, Harlan didn’t like astrology because to him, it made no logical, scientific sense. he was non spiritual and atheist because it made logical, scientific sense to him. you could compare this to someone like me, im a Fi dom, and i am very spiritual and i believe in astrology. why? because that just feels right to me and makes sense to me even if i have no concrete “logical” proof for it. everyone is logical at times, everyone knows some fact, but i dont automatically need logic to believe. Harlan did. hes not “how can we get this done?” he is “why?”

Harlan’s use of Fe // “I care about people. People are all I have time for.” -> one big thing about Harlan that people overlook sometimes is his code of ethics. part of the reason he was so difficult to work with, is because he would walk away from jobs paying him huge amounts of money if it went against his ethics. Fe (Extroverted Feeling) is the function of groups, social norms, collective harmony, likes to fit in with people, can read a room, cares about social justice, can appeal to people. people would look at this and ask “eh? Harlan.. and group harmony?? fitting in?” yes! Harlan’s past was full of him being an outsider, being made fun of, when all he wanted was to have friends and learn about people!

Harlan was extremely interested in people, social justice, fighting for what was right for everyone, justice, helping people who need it. he was described as going out of his way on many occasions to help the homeless. he went to marches and protests. he said on his dating profile that he would rather spent time with interesting people than attend boring sports events and only liked chess because he could have conversations. he could work a room and an audience with extreme ease, and he told of many occasions in which he could read people extremely well and accurately guess things about total strangers. he wanted to disrupt what he saw as no-good, stupid and cruel in society.

(the only argument i may see against this is Fe users tend to understand social cues very well, and Harlan had issues with social cues on a few occasions and understanding when he had upset people. please keep in mind, that was really when he was in manic episodes due to being bipolar, and he would engage in inappropriate behavior, usually looking for a reaction from the people around him to impress and “be funny.” to entertain. mental illness can be apart of us but it also disrupts our “usual” way of thinking.)

Harlan’s inferior Si -> and now this is where Si (Introverted Sensing) somes up. Si is the function that is all about the past. everyones past affects them, thats just how it is, its how we are who we are. BUT. using Si impacts you a lot more. i am a Si user and i am extremely nostalgic and tend to be stuck in the past a lot, and im not even a Si dom. Harlan would be Si inferior, so this wouldnt be too developed for him in most cases, its usually a function that comes out in unhealthy moments for a person, hence why its inferior. Si = the past, memories, tradition, comfort and safety in routines, stores details for later, how things used to be, what was already established. i think his Si mustve been developed enough that it came through noticeably but still struggled at times.

i think we all know some ways Harlan shows some Si usage. he could be very stubborn about, for example, technology. he refused to use anything other than a manual typewriter. especially hated computers. really really appreciated fountain pens and traditional letters or just a phone call. that is a good example of him being stuck to some tradition. more than that, i think his past was something he never stopped bringing up and using in stories. thats the thing, actually, the difference between Si vs Fi (Introverted Feeling) here. Fi is all about the self, Si is about the past. youll notice Harlan didnt add his life to his stories to necessarily talk about himself, but rather he was using past info for stories over and over again. he himself once said that if he heard something interesting from someone, it would probably end up in a story of his, even if it was a secret. sometimes, Harlan would “uncharacteristically” rely on the past like that, even if hes usually on the move.

it can be hard for me to describe inferior Si because everyones past or trauma can come out in unhealthy moments. i have this though; ive seen it described as inferior = insecurity towards that function, so inferior Si = insecure about forgetting or making wrong statements. Harlan used to brag about how amazing his memory was so i think thats definitely something true because he overcompensates. i think a blunt truth was that it wasnt always amazing and ive been confused before at how his anecdotes can change over time. ive seen Ne doms say that inferior Si = not enjoying being chained down to one thing, way more adventurous.

as a Si user, i order the same thing at my restaurants. on the other hand, Harlan would prefer not to, and would encourage me to try something different each time. but at the same time, he would probably always go to the same places himself. isnt that interesting?

more than that, i want to make a post on Harlan’s enneagram, which goes even deeper into things like his stubborn need to be right or correct, ethically good, have control over his life and not be told what to do, be knowledgeable and competent, ect. but this post was too long. so this is the MBTI portion!

said 24 year old Harlan Ellison, who passed away on this day, June 28th, 8 years ago in 2018, at the age of 84. against all odds, the guy who never shut up and “woke up angrier every morning” died peacefully in his sleep.

he died when i was 15, so it’s weird sometimes knowing that we were both kicking at the same time and i had no clue in the world who he was. a lot of the time, i research people who died before i was born and with Harlan’s antics mainly taking place in the 20th century, that makes him feel even more far away.

by the end of his life, Harlan’s undiagnosed bipolar disorder, his immense depression, was so bad that he had almost fully attempted to take himself out. luckily, he stopped at the last second and he finally reached out for help.

i mightve said this before, but it’s unfair that some sort of peace came so late in life for him. finding out that he suffered from all of that the whole time and was just forcing himself to deal with it.. it explains a lot.

there have been many times that i (and im sure some of you) have said “nah, no way, ill never make it to that age.” but i suppose we should keep trying anyway.

today, June 24, is the birthday of Susan (Toth) Ellison. if she had not suddenly passed in 2020, she would now be 66 years old. she was born in Hereford, England in 1960. Her nickname was “The Electric Baby.”

“Susan, according to her sister, was a bookworm from a very early age, and she had a life long love of the literature of the fantastic. She enrolled at Hereford Sixth Form College with the intent of earning a degree in Mathematics, a fact she would later relay to friends with a great deal of amusement, but soon switched her major to Psychology, and transferred to Manchester Polytechnic.”

as you may already know, Susan met Harlan when he was the guest of honor at a 1985 convention in Scotland, where she threw books at him after he said something rude. they got married in 1986. Susan was essentially Harlan’s biggest fan and although he took the spotlight most of the time, not only did she run a significant amount of things for/with him behind the scenes, she did some television scriptwriting and journalism.

Susan was meant to take over Harlan’s estate upon his passing. she said this: “I thought I’d be a lot more prepared. I essentially shut down. He gave me a terrific life and he loved me completely. But I gave my life to him and I don’t know who I am anymore. I have to find out.”

call me crazy, but i once had a dream, a long time ago now, in which i spoke to Harlan and Susan. and the only specific thing i remember from that dream was Susan telling me: “Just don’t forget about me.” and i think about that sometimes, even if it mightve been “just a dream.”

so i just felt like everyone should remember.

yes, everyone Harlan was living in a treehouse. and he still had good game. according to the times here… Harlan moved to California while suggesting a divorce to his second wife Billie, so when they came over and were separating, that’s when he would’ve gotten it. Apparently, his third crazy wife Loretta was the one who seeked out the actual Ellison Wonderland house that we know today.

not sure if youll be able to find any actual pictures of said treehouse though. but i can just imagine Harlan and Ahbhu in the treehouse together… and Harlan.. bringing girls to his treehouse after throwing Dean Stockwell through a bar.

now im thinking of that Nardwuar interview. “Do you guys live in a house in Los Angeles?” “No, we live in a cave, of course we live in a house!” Harlan you also once lived in a fucking TREEhouse. knowing you, a CAVEhouse is not impossible.
