sol curls up on the couch in the living quarters, exhausted. they swear, their parents are the busiest adults in the colony.. they hardly ever saw them unless they went to geoponics. part of sol had hoped that their parents might have taken the day off as well, seeing how hot it gets during dust. cal was laughing with his mom or one of her partners, marz is showing off for her two dads, tammy was cuddled up with her dad watching a holovid..
a creeping loneliness clutched at the 12 year old's heart as they watched their friends with their parents. everyone else looked so happy, so close.. solanaceae couldn't help but feel a little jealous of all of them. how come their parents spent time with them? why couldn't they have that with their mom and dad?
they flick off their holopalm, grabbing their photophonor to head back to their own living space. even if it was empty, they'd rather be there than seeing everyone else happy with their parents. they don't want to admit it, but they were lonely, and jealous. cal had like- four parents now that his mom had started dating pep alongside two others. tammy only had her dad, but uncle tonin was so nice, and he was always willing to hang out with her. marz had two dads who loved her and gave her basically everything she wanted, and they were proud of her. anemone had her mom auntie seedent, and she had her brother kom too! it wasn't fair.
they crawl into bed, tugging the curtain angrily to shut out the rest of the world. screw them.. screw everyone.. they didn't need anybody. but even those thoughts carried pain as they hugged the doll that auntie seedent had given them when they were tiny. it isn't fair. it isn't fair. they don't want to be alone, they want their mom, they want their dad. but they're always so busy, they can't leave geoponics. but it doesn't stop sol from missing them all the same.
sometimes they wish that the stratospheric hadn't ever landed.. they miss how close they were to everyone in space. how they would be able to see their parents more often, how they got to play with all their friends in the crèche all at the same time. now everyone felt further away, and they hated it. they love vertumna, they love exploring the outside even though they're not supposed to.. at least out there they got to choose that they were alone. within the walls it felt like it was out of their hands.
they curl tighter around the doll, a tear running down their cheek as they shut their eyes tight, turning out the light. maybe sleep will bring better dreams.. a dream where they're not so alone. one where they can play with their dad while their mom stood laughing. no farming, no struggling, no fear, no fighting. just family.. everyone happy again..
