It’s a day late again after an emergency happened last night (nothing terrible, make sure your weeds don’t get too tall...).
Here’s the donuts I made in Blender while following a tutorial series. It’s pretty awesome!! They need work in some areas, but I didn’t expect to get a grasp on this so easily. My brain is very much a 2D brain so it’s been difficult to grasp 3D stuff in physical media, but this was fun. I intend on using Blender for some background bases and the future CoI expansion.
Can’t really preview this particular image of the first dining hall design so here’s the full thing, while Patrons get a clearer view of the 3D layout mock-up underneath the sketch. This definitely made sketching around the bench tables easier!
A couple weeks ago I started learning Blender! That’s a donut and the beginnings of a coffee mug. I intend on using Blender to make rough mock-ups of the inn to draw on top of, so I can work more efficiently. I have since finished this tutorial series; the result will be published next Monday while Patrons see it now.
Well...it’s Tuesday, not Monday...forgot to post yesterday. Here’s a preview of the rough design sketch for the first inn design, that I finished Saturday! Next is the lobby design.
I accomplished my goal of finishing the character design sketches, though I didn't exceed it by starting the inn designs. But that's ok, I finished the tasks on my CoI to-do board and that alone was a great feeling. I also feel like I've established a good schedule for working on things. Now I just need to get up to a more comfortable speed so I can accomplish things faster.
Goals for June
As you can see from the photo above, my CoI board has a fresh list! On this list, you get a preview of some of the backgrounds that will appear in the demo. It's not the full list; there's a couple of things I don't need to design, like a sunny sky full of clouds, and there are some with minor variations. You can also see how many CGs there are in the demo -- 6, meaning 2 per route character. When I get to those, I will be doing rough sketches of them so that I can come back later down the road with a fresh eye since CGs are essentially the prizes of your average visual novel and I want them to look their best.
The goals for June are to get the designs worked out for the first inn design, which includes the exterior, the lobby, and the dining hall. One of the features that an expanded version of Come on Inn will have is a customizable inn. I could have done it in this demo, but not in the way that I really want to execute it, and it would have taken a ton of work in a demo meant to show key concepts in brief. Instead, there will be two inn designs to choose from at the start of the game. The choice will impact the game in small ways that are insignificant to the player's advancement, but give a sense of "customizing" your inn.
Patreon Updates
I finally revised the goals for the Patreon. The larger ones are still a little vague. I'm aiming for them, but I'm still so far off that I only have some vague ideas as to what could be going on by then and how the funds would be used. But I have a list of game concepts I would love to tackle as well as merchandise, zines, and novellas, so there's a lot of potential in the future. Eventually I will touch them up again.
Patron tiers have been edited a little. I have temporarily removed sketch requests from the tiers that had them. Sketch requests as rewards may return in the future in a different way, but for now they are not available. I also updated the header image. The old one was old and now I have something a bit more relevant to the Patreon and my social media.
The goal is to work a little harder on posting regular public content. I got used to posting here, but would often forget or have little to share for public Monday and WIPW posts. I'll be working on improving that.
Ko-Fi
I created a Ko-Fi for SFP! It is now open for anyone who wants to give a one-time donation instead of pledging monthly on Patreon. There are no rewards for Ko-Fi donations, but there are no strings attached for donating either.
This Week's Plans
I'm going to jump straight into designing the first inn concept. I'll admit it: buildings are not my forte. But in order to overcome the challenge, I have to actually do it, and doing so will teach more than just taking the easy way out. I've already done some research and collecting some inspirations, so hopefully I can get moving right along on it. I'll share what I've started on Wednesday!
WIPW 5/30: The last side character design sketch is done! -throws confetti- This is a mysterious young man...who is he...what is he... His horns are inspired by handmade resin jewelry/horn accessories.
