Ramblings from someone who cares about the planet
Every morning I dread picking up my phone and looking at the news. Mostly because I am tired of looking at the uneducated bull crap from the media about “climate change” and the hidden agenda behind it. I am an environmental science major and aspiring scientist and it takes everything in me to not want to walk up to them and punch them in their faces. WAKE UP. I will keep it simple.
Do you trust your doctors? Do you trust chemists, physicists, botanists, engineers? YOU DO? The environmental science field is literally MADE UP of all of the above PLUS like every other field of science! Environmental Science gets so much flack from literally everyone…. and for what? Let’s look at an example. Forensics. Forensics are LITERALLY one of the most important things in the criminal justice system. So many times they will bring in people like Forensic Geologists, Zoologists, Botanists, the list goes on. That will prove that this person was the murderer because he had said plant pod that is specific to this PARTICULAR plant, on his clothing. That is 100% usable in court. But when you tell someone that you are a botanist outside of that, you run the risk of being ridiculed for being in the “Environmental Science” realm.
I used to work at a bank right out of college while I was looking for a job and one day a former customer of mine was asking me questions, presumably to learn more about me. He asked where I went to school, and when I told him my degree was Environmental Science, he literally scoffed at me and said “What were you thinking”? I said “Excuse me?” He went on to tell me that I had wasted my time, yada yada. Only for me to reply back, and shut him up. I said, “What was I thinking? I was thinking I wanted to learn about something that I have been passionate about since I was a little kid? What I was thinking? I was thinking I wanted to help make our water, our air, and our land cleaner?” He replied with some stupid political rant and I literally looked at him dead on and said, “You were young at the time, and might not remember this but in 1969 a river LITERALLY caught on fire. LITERALLY.” Guys it’s for real. A river called the Cuyahoga River was so polluted in Ohio with oil and debris, that when a train passed it, the river ignited. This is one of the events that sparked (ehh ehh) the creation of the Clean Water Act and then later the EPA in 1970. What makes it worse, is that was wasn’t the first, or the second, or the third, or the 10th, but rather the 13TH time that the particular river caught on fire! The worst was in 1952 (pictured below). With that being said, the Cuyahoga River Fire become the symbol that, ummmm, something is wrong here. But I cringe at the thought that people today would be like, “Oh all life has died in the river? AGENDA.” Or “There is so much debris in the river that you can literally walk on water? FAKE.” That is not normal friends! And it’s not healthy.
That rant aside, one of the most annoying things is the fact that I don’t understand why someone WOULDN’T want to help the environment. Let’s take climate change out of the picture. Which I view to be a very important issue, but let’s take this controversial topic out to real talk about the environment.
Exhibit A. Here is a picture of smog. Yes, it’s in the US. Here is the exact definition of what and how smog is created (from National Geographic). “Photochemical smog is produced when sunlight reacts with nitrogen oxides and at least one volatile organic compound (VOC) in the atmosphere. Nitrogen oxides come from car exhaust, coal power plants, and factory emissions. VOCs are released from gasoline, paints, and many cleaning solvents.”
Now, let’s use our brains and common sense here. Does this look healthy to you? Does breathing in car exhaust fumes sound healthy to you? If you want to deny that (and I 100% don’t recommend this) I would fake challenge you to sit behind a car and just breathe in the car fumes. Why won’t you do this? BECAUSE IT WILL KILL YOU.
It doesn’t take a fancy degree or ANYTHING really to see that this is not healthy. “Humans haven’t done anything to affect that,” my butt. Why wouldn’t you want to support the fight in figuring out what we can do to minimize this? And yes, one of the biggest comebacks to this, is that “but but but, there are bigger causes of air pollution in __ __ __” Yeah, maybe. Here’s a whole list air pollutants. https://www3.epa.gov/airtoxics/188polls.html You can look up each one and find out where they come from. But let’s take car exhaust for example. “Americans take 1.1 billion trips a day — four for every person in the U.S” and “There are 204 million personal vehicles.” So… what I am suggesting is that this is clearly a big enough issue so why wouldn’t you want to address it and figure out a way to make it cleaner?
Back to the smog thing, if that still doesn’t sway you. Smog is a trigger for asthma. Meaning some children can’t go outside during days where there is too much air pollution because it is bad for their health. This is not to mention that it is already bad for your health because most of the above list is linked to cancer.
And one last thought. For those who say humans have nothing to do with that. Time travel to back when cars and all of these fancy chemicals weren’t all up in ya air, and tell me that you 100% believe that humans have had no effect on the air quality from the air years ago to now.
With a world, filled with smarter and smarter minds, we should be using them to better the earth, not stick to old ways that are KNOWN to hurt the planet.
With all that being said, and there are hundreds of examples I could give, we should all be invested in taking care of the planet. Just because it makes the world a healthier place. The world can exist without us, but we rely on the planet.

Breathless for the simple beauty, lucky for the witnessing of it. We are visitors here, tourists to this planet, isn’t it time we fell in love with the grandeur all over again? #tylerknott
