Kurt Vonnegut’s 8 Tips on Creative Writing
Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.
Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.
Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.
Every sentence must do one of two things–reveal character or advance the action.
Start as close to the end as possible.
Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them–in order that the reader may see what they are made of.
Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.
Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

Existential Vacuum — The psychological condition in which a person doubts that life has any meaning. This new neurosis is characterized by loss of interest and lack of initiative. According to Viktor Frankl, the existential vacuum is apparently a concomitant of industrialization. When neither instinct nor social tradition direct man toward what he ought to do, soon he will not even know what he wants to do, and the existential vacuum results.
Because of social pressure, individualism is rejected by most people in favor of conformity. Thus the individual relies mainly upon the actions of others and neglects the meaning of his own personal life. Hence he sees his own life as meaningless and falls into the “existential vacuum” feeling inner void. Progressive automation causes increasing alcoholism, juvenile delinquency, and suicide. — Victor Frankl

TODAY IN MUSIC HISTORY
On April 8, 1963 British musician John Charles Julian Lennon was born in Liverpool. He was named after his paternal grandmother, Julia Lennon (nee Stanley). Lennon made his musical debut at the age of 11 on his father’s 1974 album, Walls and Bridges, but made his actual debut as an artist with his first album Valotte which was released ten years later.
Julian was also an actor, in a sense, with an appearance as The Baker in the musical The Hunting of the Snark (1987), which also featured Roger Daltrey, Justin Hayward and Billy Connolly, with John Hurt as narrator. As well in a cameo in Leaving Las Vegas (1995).
By the end of 1991, Julian had left the music business to venture in his interests such as cooking, sailing, and sculpting. He returned back in 1998 with his album Photograph Smile, which gained little success and again in 2011 with his most recent album, Everything Changes.
Recently, Julian has been traveling to Kenya and Ethiopia, visiting water, Humanitarian and environmental projects. As his birthday wish, he’s asked his fans and supporters to join his mission and donate to the White Feather Foundation, helping to gain clean drinkable water for those who are in need. Please go here if you’d be willing to donate.
Happy Birthday, Julian
