Additions to Spell Bags
If you wish to empower your spell bag more, you can wrap corresponding ingredients in a piece of paper that has the intent written on it. For example, a love spell bag could include, amongst other ingredients, a picture of the person you want to attract (or a drawing of two people together), some rose petals and catnip that is then wrapped up and placed in the bag. Salt and pepper can be wrapped up in a paper with a protection sigil, the Lord's Prayer, Psalm 91, a prayer to One's Patron Deity and so on and so forth.
Let the intent guide the correspondences. In order to draw love between two people, try and do things in sets of two - to represent the two lovers. Alternatively, the above could be done with one set of ingredients such as two rose buds that are bound together to represent the love of the two binding them together. Protection spells could make use of the number four and five. Four to represent the four cardinal points and protection on all four corners and the five represents all four corners and your personal self (or the thing being protected). So this could be four nails, five peppercorns tied up in a picture of the person to be protected and so and so forth.
In lieu of any crystal, quartz... but something that isn't really touched on is that clear quartz has the nifty ability of concentrating a spell's energy and empowering it about five fold-ish depending on how you charged and consecrated it. A symbol piece of it can be used to empower the spell and just maintain good energy in it for longer periods of time (essentially acting like a battery) whereas a point is more potent in spells where a direct and concentrated change is wanted. Wrapping someone's picture around a clear quartz is a simple ritual for directing energy to them.
To the same, an incredibly potent empowerment for a ritual is a simple bit of frankincense resin. I've tried it before, the stuff works like a bomb and empowers most spells (especially benedictions and what is perceived as the Right Hand of the Witch's work) ten fold. The same can be said with dragon's blood resin which can be added to the packet in places where frankincense, due to its very peaceful and holy nature (being one of the Gifts given to Christ), cannot. I generally go by the way of - benefic stuff and certain areas of what is considered baleful (such as banishing, binding and the like) can have frankincense, all spells can have dragon's blood.
Photos can be used as sachets in the above manner as well. If you take a photo and write the petition over the person and then wrap up appropriate materials, then you got yourself what can be considered akin to a poppet. To heal someone, orange rind. To heal a marriage, having a picture of the couple (and the couple only) with some orange flowers and pink rose petals, or even basil.

'Exquisite' wooden figurine dating to early Roman Britain found in a ditch in England
Archaeologists have unearthed an âextremely rareâ carved wooden figurine, likely dating to early Roman Britain, in a waterlogged ditch north of London during excavations ahead of a major rail project.
The figurine is badly deteriorated, but it appears to depict a man dressed in a Roman-style tunic. Pieces of pottery were also found in the ditch and date to between A.D. 43 and 70, during the Roman conquest of much of Britain under the emperor Claudius, which occurred from A.D. 43 to around 84. (Julius Caesar staged earlier invasions of Britain in 54 B.C. and 55 B.C. but he achieved no permanent hold on the island.)
The archaeologists suggest the figurine may have been deliberately placed in the ditch as a religious offering; Read more.
How would you recommend starting with spirit work?
It may seem like a frustratingly simple answer, but I think the best place to start is meditation, prayer, and offerings. These act as a foundation to Spirit Work, and as such, you need a strong grasp on them before attempting to build further upon that foundation.
Following that, it would probably be a good idea to work on trance induction, basic warding techniques, as well as tracking and interpreting your dreams.
Of course, all of this is assuming you've already managed to get as good an understanding of the entity you hope to work with as you possibly can, through a mix of observation, divination, ans research of the historical record.

Do you know any easy protection spell from malicious entities?
Take a bit of ash, salt, and moist dirt. Mix them together.  With it, mark the top of your head, then mark the bottom of your feet. âBlack earth that feeds the roots And lifeless flame turned to soot And the bitter seaâs stone fruit, I bid ye protect all that stands between my crown and boot And if it come from Heaven, or if it come from Hell, send it back into its home,  for safely âtwixt the two I dwell.â Â
